Chapter 4

Author: Liora
The résumés I sent out started receiving responses.

Among them, the one I was most excited about came from a pharmaceutical company in the nearby Cinderscorch pack. It was a major enterprise under Coghaven.

I scheduled an interview immediately.

In my past life, I dreamed of having a good job that paid well countless times, but I never had the chance. Now, I was both nervous and excited.

Before I could figure out my next plan, my phone rang with a call from Damon. I hesitated before picking up.

His usual cold voice came through the phone. "Where are you?"

My good mood vanished instantly as I replied, "What do you want?"

His tone turned harsher. "My parents are back, and they want you to join us for dinner."

As the sky darkened, I returned to Shadowmire Manor. There were four people seated at the dining table—Alpha, Luna, Damon, and Raven.

Something felt wrong because everyone had grave, solemn expressions.

As I calmly took my seat, Damon glanced at me before getting up and walking away.

Raven immediately followed him upstairs with a triumphant look in her eyes.

Ignoring them, I turned to the Alpha and Luna with a polite smile.

In my past life, they always tried to speak for me through all those years of Damon's torment. But by then, the Shadowmire pack was already under his rule as Alpha, so they couldn't stop him.

I never blamed them. If anything, I was to blame for being foolish and waking up too late.

"I've thought about it for some time now, Alpha. I'm not suited to be the next Luna of this pack. He hates me, and I'm tired too.

"Staying together will only ruin us both, so it's better if we can let go. Just because we're fated mates doesn't mean we have to stay together."

Tears filled Luna's eyes after hearing my words. "Can't you think about it, Thalia?"

I shook my head. This was the clearest decision I'd made since my rebirth.

Back in my room, I packed up the last few belongings I'd missed out. Just as I turned a corner to leave, Raven stopped me.

Her eyes brimmed with tears as she pleaded. "Please give Damon back to me, Thalia… I'm carrying his pup, and a pup shouldn't grow up without a father."

Seeing the barely noticeable sneer at the corner of her lips, I instinctively stepped back.

In the next second, she grabbed my hand, pressed it to her shoulder, and threw herself backward toward the stairs.

"Thalia!" she cried out.

Then, she started screaming, "It hurts! My pup!"

Tumbling down the stairs, her dress was soon stained with blood as her screams tore through the manor.

Damon rushed out from his study and took in the scene with bloodshot eyes. Without hesitation, he lunged forward and slapped me hard across the face.

"Have you lost your fucking mind? How dare you lay hands on her and an unborn pup! You're just a vicious, heartless bitch!"

The Alpha and Luna rushed over after hearing the commotion, while Raven wailed in agony.

Damon raised his claw and slapped me again, roaring, "Father! Mother! Look at her! She's not fit to be the future Luna for the pack!"

Staring straight into Damon's furious eyes, I pointed at the surveillance cameras and said, "The truth speaks for itself, and don't worry. From this moment on, I'm no longer the pack's next Luna.

"I, Thalia Emberwood, accept your rejection, Damon Hale."

Zane and I hadn't planned on going public so soon.As the current Alpha of Coghaven, every move he made was closely watched. We agreed to wait until we officially marked before making an announcement. But recently, Zane had taken charge of a major medical reform for Coghaven Council, which placed him right in the middle of the pack's core spotlight.Even if we carefully arranged to meet only at night, there was always a chance we'd get caught on camera. He'd had enough of hiding. So one night, he pulled out a silver ring he'd designed himself and proposed on the spot.I didn't hesitate and immediately said yes.As we were walking home hand in hand, a low, hoarse voice suddenly called out behind us, "Thalia…"I instinctively turned around to see Damon step out of the shadows with red-rimmed eyes. The sight had me frowning deeply. When he spoke, his voice was soft and almost drifting. "Don't be afraid, Thalia. I'm not here to cause trouble. I just… wanted to talk to you."I co

An old classmate texted and sent me a link, telling me to check it out.It led to Raven's post, who cried victim online. "I lost the pup because Thalia pushed me… She's always been jealous of me, so she stole Damon from me, and now she's trying to hurt me too…"She posed in front of a hospital backdrop and added a picture of the diagnosis report, playing the perfect victim. She guided the public to target me with a wave of abusive comments, and some even got hold of my phone number.Every morning, I woke up to a flood of missed calls from strangers. All my social media platforms were bombarded with malicious messages. Even classmates, who barely spoke to me, came crawling out to point fingers.I let out an angry laugh and lodged a police report before calling Damon's number. "Where's the surveillance footage? Hand it over now."I thought he'd at least have the decency to feel ashamed, but I was wrong. On the other end of the line, Damon's voice was light. "It's fine with me if y

After that day, the Alpha and Luna called me several times. Their voices were gentle as they talked me into coming back to the Shadowmire pack, but I turned them down without hesitation.I'd fought with everything I had to get out of that place, so no way I'd ever go back. When the day came for the meal I'd arranged with Zane, he showed up in the same understated black with his cap pulled low.I understood. As Alpha of Coghaven, he was always under watch, especially when he was the Chief Alpha with a seat in the council and had an influence across major territories. Showing up in a border pack made him an easy target for gossip and ambushes.I booked a special private room in the back, but we'd barely sat down when Damon barged in. He grabbed my wrist and barked, "How dare you be having dinner with him!"I yanked my hand free and frowned. "Who do you think you are to control me?"Instead of holding back, I bared my claws just enough to make him flinch and let go. Then, I steppe

Damon had always said my existence was getting in the way of his perfect life with Raven, so I made up my mind. That same day, I posted a picture on Instagram, which showed a large, bony male hand wrapped tightly around mine, our fingers interlocking. The caption was just one word. "Hello."Within minutes, my comment section exploded."Wait a minute. This hand isn't Damon's, is it?""What are you doing? Are you insane?""Take it down! Quit causing trouble!"Damon's gang of cronies instantly jumped in to swarm me with comments and insults. As I sat there sipping my water and watching them lose their minds, I couldn't feel any better. Finally, I set my phone down and turned to the he-wolf beside me. "Is it true that you're… Zane Duskbane?"Wearing a cap and mask, Zane was dressed in black from head to toe, which completely covered every inch of his skin. He nodded at my question.Though he was Alpha, his presence wasn't overbearing. If anything, it was calm and restrained. He

I gave the Alpha and Luna standing at the door a polite nod. "I'm sorry, but something else came up. I have to get going now."Before they could respond, I turned and walked away. After a few steps, all the strength drained from my body as I sank onto the stone steps. My cheeks stung, and my ears rang; Damon hadn't held back with that slap. He'd always been that way, to trust anyone but me. Raven loved putting on her little shows and framing me since high school. Once, she got trapped in the restroom. I kicked down the door to get her out, but she threw herself into Damon's arms and cried, "Thalia locked me in."Damon had never trusted me."Need a ride?" A low, calm voice pulled me from my thoughts.I looked up and saw a man in a dark gray coat standing under the streetlights. His facial features were sharp, and his brown hair was neatly slicked back, giving him a commanding presence.I was stunned. The man I was looking at was the current Alpha of Coghaven, Zane Duskbane.I
