Step by step, Beta Thomas emerged from the darkness.

Selene scrambled backward, clutching the leather-bound journal to her chest with her good hand. Her left arm hung entirely limp at her side, cold and numb, the skin surrounding her wounded palm turning a sickly, bruised violet. The magic she had used to push back Kael’s death wasn't just fading—it was actively consuming her strength from the inside out.

Blood trickled from Thomas's broken nose, painting his sneering lip a sticky crimson, but his eyes burned with a dark, triumphant fervor. In his hand, he casually swung the obsidian blade, its black metal humming with that same nauseating, high-pitched frequency that made Selene’s stomach churn.

"You run fast for a wounded stray," Thomas drawled, his heavy boots crushing a ribcage among the skeletal remains on the floor with a dry, splintering crack. "But you're out of places to run, girl. Nowhere left to go."

Selene forced herself to her feet, pressing her back against the freezing star-metal of the vault doors. "Where is Kael?" she spat, her voice trembling despite her desperate attempt to sound unbothered. "What did you do to him?"

"The young Alpha?" Thomas let out a harsh, barking laugh. "He's back in the upper cave, pinned under three of my best warriors. Even if he survives the poison boiling his blood, he won't make it down here in time to save you."

Thomas paused, his eyes landing on the open journal in her hand and the bloody smear across her palm.

"Ah. I see you've been reading former High Alpha Richard’s late-night regrets," Thomas sneered, taking another step closer. "He was a weak man at heart. He took the power we gave him to secure his throne, but when it came time to pay the price and open the inner doors, he lost his nerve. He hid you away, thinking he could seal the debt forever."

"He said whatever is behind these doors is a terror," Selene said, her fingers digging into the leather cover. "He said opening it would destroy us all."

"He was afraid of progress!" Thomas snarled, his composure snapping for a split second before smooth arrogance reclaimed his face. "What lies behind these doors is the raw, unrefined source of our ancestors' strength! With it, the Silver Fang pack won't just rule these woods—we will crush the High Council and bow to no one!"

He raised the obsidian blade, pointing the jagged tip directly at her heart.

"Now... you can bleed on that threshold willingly, or I can carve the blood out of you piece by piece. Choice is yours."

Selene’s pulse hammered in her throat. She looked at the iron vault doors behind her. The crescent-shaped runes etched into the metal seemed to pulse in faint response to her presence, whispering a low, vibrating hum into her spine.

A key. A sacrificial conduit.

She realized with terrifying clarity that Thomas didn't know the full truth either. He thought he was unleashing power, but the skeletons littered across the floor—all bearing the dark, corrupted veins of the same hunter's curse—told a far darker story. Everyone who had tried to manipulate this force had been consumed by it.

"I won't let you use me," Selene whispered.

"I wasn't asking for your permission," Thomas barked.

He lunged.

Despite her dead arm and exhausted body, survival instinct kicked in. Selene threw the heavy journal straight at Thomas’s face. The heavy book struck him square across the eyes, throwing off his balance just enough for his black blade to slice harmlessly through the air where her neck had been a second before.

Selene ducked beneath his shoulder, driving her elbow hard into his wounded, broken nose.

Thomas roared in pain, staggering back, but his hand lashed out, his broad fingers snapping around Selene’s bad wrist. The sudden pressure sent a blinding spike of agony shooting up her paralyzed arm. Selene shrieked, her knees buckling as he yanked her forward and slammed her hard against the star-metal vault doors.

The moment her bleeding left hand touched the cold metal of the threshold, the entire subterranean chamber went dead silent.

The pressure in the chamber dropped instantly. The luminescent moonstones in the pillars flickered and died, plunging the vast hall into pitch blackness.

A deep, ancient heartbeat echoed from behind the thick metal doors.

THUMP.

The star-metal runes flared into a searing, terrifying crimson light. The obsidian knife in Thomas's hand shattered into a hundred harmless splinters of glass. Thomas gasped, dropping Selene as he stumbled back in sudden horror, clutching his head as a deafening, demonic whisper echoed directly inside their minds.

"FINALLY... THE BLOOD SINGS AGAIN."

The heavy iron deadbolts inside the door began to turn, grinding against centuries of rust with a sound like tearing metal.

Selene collapsed onto the cold marble floor, gasping for air as her crescent mark burned so hot it felt like an iron brand against her skin. The doors groaned open an inch, and a wave of thick, suffocating shadow poured out across the marble floor like liquid smoke.

From the dark tunnel behind them, a loud crash echoed, followed by a feral, agonized roar.

Kael burst into the chamber.

His clothes were torn to shreds, his chest covered in a mixture of his own black blood and the fresh crimson of the warriors he had fought through. The dark veins had covered his entire face, but his eyes were blazing with that erratic, dangerous golden light.

"Selene! Get away from the door!" Kael screamed, charging across the marble floor toward her.

"Too late, boy!" Thomas yelled, though his voice was laced with frantic panic as the liquid shadow crept toward his boots. "She opened it! The seal is broken!"

Before Kael could reach her, the shadow pooling on the floor suddenly whipped upward like living tendrils, wrapping tightly around Thomas’s ankles. The Beta screamed as he was violently yanked off his feet and dragged backward, thrashing wildly, toward the widening crack in the vault doors.

"William! Help me!" Thomas shrieked, clawing at the smooth marble floor until his fingernails tore off, leaving bloody streaks behind him.

The darkness swallowed him whole into the vault, and the heavy iron doors slammed shut with a thunderous boom that shook the entire cavern, re-locking themselves with a sickening click.

Silence returned to the vault hall, heavy and suffocating.

Selene lay on the cold stone, unable to move her body, her vision narrowing to a pinprick. She watched through blurred eyes as Kael dropped to his knees beside her, his warm hands cupping her freezing face.

"Selene... hey, look at me," Kael pleaded, his voice breaking as the golden light in his eyes began to bleed into dark shadow once more. "Stay open... stay with me..."

"It... took it," Selene choked out, her breath barely a whisper as the coldness in her blood threatened to pull her under completely. "The vault... it took my blood..."

"I know," Kael whispered, pressing his forehead against hers, his tears hot against her cold skin. "I've got you. I've got you."

A soft, slow clapping echoed from the entrance of the chamber.

Elder William stepped out from the shadows of the tunnel, holding a strange, silver-embroidered parchment in his hands. He looked down at Kael and Selene with a calm, satisfied expression, completely unbothered by Thomas's brutal disappearance.

"Fascinating," William said softly, unfolding the parchment. "The Beta was always too impatient. He thought the vault contained wealth and weapons. He didn't realize... the vault is the altar."

William looked up, his icy blue eyes fixing on Selene’s fading form.

"And now that the Silver Luna blood has bound itself to the lock, the real hunt can finally begin.”

The white salt flats of the Basin of the Sunken Sun stretched before them like a frozen, motionless sea, reflecting the sharp, pale light of the rising full moon. Every step onto the vast, cracked basin sent soft skitters of crystallized salt across the dry clay, echoing in the quiet night air. Above, the sky was a deep, velvet blue, untroubled by clouds, yet directly over the central ruined city, the stars were warped and blurred—bent by the violent, localized distortion field radiating from the Regent’s Spike. Selene walked at the head of the expedition, flanked closely by Kael. Her linen tunic blew gently in the night draft that swept down from the red sandstone cliffs behind them. On her right wrist, the tri-mark was no longer a quiet glow; it had ignited into a brilliant, woven band of light. White celestial radiance, deep ocean indigo, and dark earth violet twined together, casting long, three-hued shadows across the white salt. Behind them came Vivienne, her shoulder-str

The heat of the southern canyons was a dry, heavy weight that settled over the expedition the moment they left the cool spray of the Serpent’s Wash behind. Red sandstone walls, carved into sheer, sweeping terraces by wind and long-vanished waters, rose hundreds of feet into a pale, cloudless sky. The canyon floor was a broad, flat expanse of baked clay and fine red dust, littered with the smooth, rounded river-stones of a dead waterway. Here and there, the pale, petrified trunks of ancient ironwood trees stood like skeletal sentinels against the glare of the midday sun. Selene walked at the head of the column beside Kael. She had removed her heavy northern riding coat, wearing a light tunic of unbleached linen with her sleeves rolled past her elbows. On her right wrist, the tri-mark—the silver crescent of the sky, the indigo curve of the sea, and the violet line of the earth—glowed with a soft, persistent warmth. But it was the violet line that dominated now, pulsing in a slow,

The days following the stabilization of the Tide Moon passed in a whirlwind of diplomatic exchanges, scholars’ assemblies, and the quiet, deliberate work of re-establishing a forgotten connection. In the Grand Plaza of the Tide, northern trackers and western sea-farers sat together over brass lanterns and flagons of spiced kelp-wine, trading tales of frozen mountain passes for stories of deep-sea trenches and floating markets. Vivienne barely slept; she spent her hours in the temple’s submerged scriptorium alongside the sea-singers, transcribing obsidian tablets onto fresh parchment so that a preliminary copy of the true annals could be dispatched back to the Warden Council in the Capital. Selene and Kael spent their mornings on the stone terrace overlooking the bay. With every tide that rolled into Oakhaven, the energy circulating through the global conduit grew smoother, its frequency settling into a steady, rhythmic hum that echoed in the marrow of Selene’s bones. On her rig

The narrow stone bridge suspended over the subterranean reservoir vibrated with a raw, terrifying intensity. Every footstep sent fine vibrations through the soles of Selene’s riding boots, and the spray from the churning ocean reservoir below coated the polished slate in a thin, dangerous sheen of sea-salt. Kael kept his grip tight around Selene’s hand, his broad frame positioned slightly ahead on the narrow ledge to break the howling draft sweeping off the indigo sphere. His hazel eyes were narrowed, scanning the arc of the silver chains overhead. Sparks of static violet and indigo arc-light danced across his leather coat, setting his hair on end with the sheer weight of the unchanneled magic. "The wind is rising," Kael shouted over the thunderous hum of the sphere. "The pressure inside the shell is building!" "It’s not just wind, Kael—it’s the pulse!" Selene called back, her silver hair whipping across her face in the violent draft. On her right wrist, the three marks burne

The descent into the Vault of the Tide Moon began at the edge of the harbor terrace, where a grand, spiral stair cut directly through the living basalt of the sea-cliff. Down and down the expedition went, leaving behind the sunlight of Oakhaven and entering a vast, submerged sanctuary carved into the ocean floor. Thick panes of translucent, ancient sea-glass lined the upper vaulting, revealing the dark turquoise depths of the bay above, where schools of silver fish darted between the towering stone pilings of the city. High Matron Maris walked at the front, her driftwood staff striking the damp marble floor with a rhythmic, ringing pulse. Beside her, Selene kept her bare right hand raised, using the soft violet-and-silver radiance of her dual mark to illuminate the ancient murals carved along the spiraling wall. Kael walked a half-step behind Selene, his hand resting on the hilt of his broadsword, his hazel eyes alert to every shift in the water pressure humming through the sto

  • Selene the Silver Luna    Chapter 95: The False History

The chamber beneath the main sanctuary of the Temple of the Fallen Tide was built of deep ocean-green serpentine, cool to the touch and slick with condensation. Deep-sea sun-crystals—salvaged centuries ago from the oceanic trenches—hung in wrought-silver cages along the walls, casting a soft, aqua-marine luminescence across the stone floor. High Matron Maris led Selene, Kael, and Vivienne down a flight of narrow spiral stairs into the heart of the temple’s scriptorium. Unlike the vast, dry archives of the Capital, this repository did not house parchment or animal-skin codices. The shelves were lined with thousands of thin, smooth slabs of black obsidian, carved with microscopic line-work and submerged in stone troughs filled with preserved salt water to prevent the stone from fracturing. "Parchment rots in the salt air," Maris explained as she stepped beside a central pedestal made of carved coral. "Stone endures. Every record from the age of the First Separation—every letter,
