Chapter 3

Author: Nora Blythe
Jacob's POV

Before I could relax, another commotion erupted inside the room. Tyler hadn't even donated 100 milliliters when he suddenly cried out that he felt sick.

He clutched his chest and winced. "Ms. Green, my chest hurts, and I'm really dizzy."

I rushed to check the monitor, but all his readings were normal.

Anna was clearly worried about him. She shoved the nurse's syringe aside. "Stop. He's given enough."

She helped Tyler up and immediately tried to leave with him.

I blocked her path, my eyes bloodshot. "Where are you taking him? You promised me. What about Nancy?"

Anna shoved me aside. "Tyler isn't a blood bank. If he keeps giving blood, he's the one who'll end up in danger. Don't you care what happens to Nancy once he can't donate anymore?"

Anna ignored my attempts to stop her and left with Tyler.

I pressed myself against the wall, my heart pounding as I prayed that the blood Tyler had given would be enough to pull Nancy through. But how could 100 milliliters possibly be enough?

The doctor came out of the operating room shaking his head.

I swayed on my feet and caught myself against the wall, barely managing to stay upright. "D-Doctor, how is Nancy?"

My voice shook. I was terrified his answer would confirm my worst fear.

The doctor looked grim, and there was pity in his eyes. "She's out of immediate danger, but she still hasn't regained consciousness. Her brain didn't get enough blood, and she went without oxygen for too long.

"You need to prepare yourself. If she doesn't wake up, she may remain in a vegetative state. Even if she does, she could be left with permanent cognitive impairment."

His words played over and over in my mind.

A nurse wheeled Nancy back into her room with an oxygen mask over her face. She looked so thin and small. If her chest hadn't been rising and falling, I would have thought she was dead.

Numb, I pulled out my phone and called Anna. I wanted to ask why she would do this to Nancy. She answered almost immediately, but the background was so noisy that I could barely hear her.

Before I could say anything, she snapped at me over the noise, "What do you want? I told you, I'm not letting anything happen to Tyler. If he didn't give enough blood, get the rest from the blood bank."

She hung up, and the line began to beep in my ear.

I no longer had the strength to stand. I crouched beside Nancy's bed, pain stabbing through my chest.

Notifications kept pouring in. My boss told me to resign before I made the news outlet look bad. My public statement only made the backlash worse.

"This reporter must be desperate to go viral. He can't just spread lies, apologize, and expect everything to go away. Someone should report him to the police."

"This loser actually thought he had a chance with Ms. Green? Disgusting. Stop using her name for clout."

"Someone should dox him and teach him a lesson. He makes me sick."

Meanwhile, Anna posted a new photo on social media.

In it, her fingers were interlaced with Tyler's, their rings catching the sunlight. She had taken him to watch the sunset and sped across an overpass with him.

My finger went still over the photo. As the monitors beeped around me, the tears I'd been holding back finally began to fall.

If there was even the slightest chance of helping her, I had to try.I paid a fortune for information through the black market and finally found someone who could perform the surgery.I saw Anna again a week before Nancy's operation. At last, she showed some concern for her daughter. Her eyes reddened the moment she saw me. "Jacob, how's Nancy? Is she okay?""I told you before. She's in bad shape," I answered flatly.Anna had lost the right to call herself Nancy's mother the moment she stopped Nancy's treatment simply because Tyler said he felt sick.Anna seemed to notice how cold I was toward her.Almost pleading, she gripp

"Where's Nancy? Where is my daughter? She's sick."The doctor asked her to calm down before patiently explaining, "Ms. Green, Nancy has already been discharged. Didn't Mr. Pollard tell you? That's strange. He said he was transferring her to another hospital for treatment."Anna froze. She tried to ask what had happened, but no words came. She didn't even know which question to ask first. When she finally recovered enough to act, she called Jacob, her hand trembling. This time, he didn't answer. Third-Person POVAnna had heard that accusation before. She had once called Jacob cruel and heartless for treating Tyler the same way.But now, she frowned at Tyler. "We had a deal. You promised to donate blood to Nancy as soon as the wedding was over. She needs you to save her life."No one forced you to sign that contract, and I've paid you more than enough over the years. How much longer are you going to stall?"Anna saw nothing cruel about her demand."But Anna, I still haven't recovered. My head is killing me," Tyler protested.Anna's face hardened. "You knew what you were agreeing to, Tyler. No matter what happens, you're donating the blood Nancy needs for her exchange transfusion. Even if you pass out, I'm still taking you to the hospital today."Her sudden change caught Tyler off guard. Before, all he had to do was complain that he felt sick. She would keep it from Jacob, and Nancy would miss another transfusion. But this time, Anna was determined to make him donate.I

Sure, he's handsome, but is that really all it took to sweep you off your feet?"Anna's friends pressed her for

Jacob's POVA week passed, and Nancy still showed no signs of waking up. I hadn't contacted Anna all week. The doctor told me Nancy no longer needed transfusions. She was living on nutrients delivered through an IV, and her hair had become dry and brittle.I had lost my job as a reporter and was planning to move Nancy to another hospital. When I went home to get some clean clothes, I opened the door and found Anna waiting on the couch. Apparently, she was done having fun. She acted as if none of it had ever happened. She stood and hugged me from behind. "Have you been at the hospital this whole time? Has Nancy missed me? I'll visit her one of these days."I said nothing and moved away from her.Anna looked annoyed when I acted as if she wasn't there. "Are you still angry? I had someone bury all the bad press, so you don't have to worry. I know none of this has been fair to you."Once Nancy gets better, we can all take a trip and get away for a while."She kept bringing Nancy i
