Chapter 2

작가: Lotus
Strange, seeing him like this. Since the amnesia, this was the first time we'd come face to face.

He stood in front of me, and reality finally sank in. This was a different Victor.

He didn't step inside right away.

His gaze swept from my neck all the way down to my ankles.

I hung up the phone, fidgeting with the lace trim of my nightgown.

"Yeah, that's me. Though 'ex-wife' might be more accurate soon."

He didn't respond. One hand in his trouser pocket, the other casually adjusting a cuff, moving with an elegance that didn't belong to a man who'd been severely injured.

"Louis tells me I used to love you very much." His voice was still a little hoarse.

Used to. Tells me.

Something about the phrasing made me angry, though I couldn't quite say why.

"And?" I looked up. "Is Mr. Victor saying this because he finds his past self ridiculous?"

He didn't answer immediately.

His gaze drifted to the nightstand.

There sat a photo from last year at the sapphire mine. In it, I was hugging a massive uncut stone, beaming. Victor stood behind me, arms around my waist, chin resting on top of my head. Cold expression, impossibly soft eyes.

Now, Victor looked at that photo and frowned.

"Not ridiculous," he said after a few seconds. "Just hard to understand."

"I don't understand why I would've fallen in love with a human."

I turned away with a scoff.

That wasn't what he said when he was chasing me.

The day we first met, I'd just gotten off work, so exhausted I was practically floating.

I looked up and was blinded by the most gorgeous man I'd ever seen.

He stared at me. I stared back.

Five seconds passed.

Just as I was starting to wonder if I was hallucinating from fatigue, he smiled. It was the kind of smile where his entire face lit up, full of shock and joy and deep, overwhelming satisfaction.

"Found you," he said, his voice like a cello.

"Huh?"

"My mate." He closed the distance in one stride and pulled me into his arms without asking.

I was so startled I dropped my files everywhere.

"Wait, wait. Sir, you've got the wrong person."

"No, I don't." He dipped his head, his nose almost brushing my cheek, and inhaled deeply. "This is the scent. It's you."

"I've been looking for you for twenty-seven years."

I found out later that serpents have an instinct to mark their destined mates. After coming of age, they're driven to seek out a specific scent that belongs to them alone.

No one expected that Victor would feel nothing for any female shifter, and that he'd find what he was looking for in a dirty corner of a human city.

He told me that in that moment, twenty-seven years of restless, churning blood went still.

"Marry me, Cassandra. I'll give you everything."

*****

"Cassandra?"

Victor's voice yanked me out of the memory.

I blinked. He was still watching me.

"Sorry." I forced the corners of my mouth up. "Just remembering some things from before."

Like how he'd swept into my life with that absolute certainty and dragged me into the world of shifters. And how he was now using amnesia as an excuse to say he didn't need me as his mate anymore.

"Mr. Victor," I met his eyes. "When you get your memories back, will you regret this?"

His gaze held mine.

"I don't regret any decision I've made."

"Even if my memories return, I won't change my mind. Monday. I expect you at the Mark Removal Center. Don't be late."

I nodded. "Fine."

He didn't say another word and turned to leave.

My head was a mess, but old habits kicked in and I instinctively moved to walk him out.

I tripped on the edge of the rug.

"Careful."

A force caught me around the waist and pulled me back.

I crashed into a solid, warm chest.

That familiar cool scent wrapped around me instantly.

Through the thin fabric of my nightgown, I felt the steady thud of his heartbeat against my back. One beat, then another—strong and sure.

Then he let go as if he'd been burned.

I turned. He was staring at his own hand, the one that had just held me, looking confused.

"Sorry." His voice was even rougher now. "That was out of line."

He turned and left quickly, almost stumbling.

I watched him disappear down the stairs.

The spot on my waist where his hand had been still felt warm.

I touched it, then reached back to feel the faint raised outline of the serpent-shaped mark on the nape of my neck.

"Liar," I whispered at the empty doorway.

The last night of the trip. We were in a small cabin by the sea.Outside, the sound of waves. Inside, the fire crackled.Victor wrapped his arms around me from behind, chin resting on my shoulder."Cassandra.""Hmm?""I remember," he said softly. "Everything."I turned to face him, not even a little surprised."I was wondering how long you were going to keep up the act."He coughed, embarrassed, and looked away. "Was it that obvious?""Please." I held up a finger. "The amnesia Victor wouldn't remember that I hate shellfish and love berries. He'd just say, cold as ice, 'Cassandra, I want a divorce.'""I'm sorry." His expression turned genuine. "I shouldn't have said I wanted to separate, and I definitely shouldn't have forgotten you."I snorted. "What else?""I shouldn't have made you sad.""So," he dropped to one knee and looked up at me with steady eyes, "I'm going to court you all over again."I stared. "What?""Starting today, I'm going to pursue you the same way I did when we first

I didn't answer right away. Before, his post-amnesia coldness and rejection had sliced through five years of sweetness. But now, this Victor, half lost, half clinging to me, tempting me with the tip of his tail, maybe wasn't so terrifying after all."I'll think about it," I heard myself say, my voice a little distant. He smiled instantly."But I have conditions." I added."First, until I say otherwise, you can't lose control like last night.""Second, when I want to touch your tail, you let me.""Third, stop saying weird things to me."He blinked, seemingly unclear on what counted as "weird things," but nodded. "Deal.""That's it for now." I cleared my throat. "We'll see how you do."He was on me immediately, tail rubbing against my calf. "Can I have a hug? Just one?"I hesitated, then nodded. "One."He pulled me into his arms, rested his chin on top of my head, and let out a contented sigh."And a kiss? Just a quick one." He was already leaning in as he said it.This time, I didn't do

He kicked the front door open, then used his tail to slam it shut behind us.The motion-sensor lights blinked on, making the blood and wounds on his body look even worse."Let go of me. Let me treat your injuries." I struggled against him."They'll heal." He cut me off, leaning down, his hot, wet tongue tracing the shell of my ear. "Want you.""Don't—you're still bleeding." I gasped and turned my head, reaching for the sedative. He misread my resistance. A flash of hurt crossed his eyes, followed by something darker and more desperate. He pressed his forehead against mine, his scorching breath ragged against my face, words tumbling out in fragments. "Don't leave. My Cassandra. I love you so much."The first time this version of Victor had said he loved me.Before I could process it, his kiss crashed down, urgent and practiced, his lips catching mine.My back arched, and what was left of my rational mind dissolved. His hands grew rougher, more frantic. His tail coiled around my ankles

By the time my car turned onto the tree-lined road leading to the Serpent estate, it was fully dark.I rounded the last bend and a fallen tree blocked the road."Great. Perfect timing." I frowned, slowing down to turn around. The headlights swept through the trees. Something moved in the shadows. My heart lurched. I yanked the steering wheel. At the same instant, dark shapes burst out of the woods and surrounded the car.I stared at them in horror. Wolves, their eyes vicious and cold."Well, well." The one in front licked his fangs. "Victor lets his precious little mate wander around alone?"My brain short-circuited, but instinct hit before thought did. I slammed the gas."Grab her.""The serpents killed our brothers. Your life pays for theirs."Several of them lunged at once. The car rocked violently. A fist smashed through the side window, shattering it instantly. A clawed hand reached in, swiping at my throat.I screamed and shrank back.Just before the claws reached me, a streak o

I drove Victor to his temporary residence in the main city.Louis was already waiting at the entrance. The second he saw me helping Victor out of the car, his face lit up."Cassandra." He rushed over. "So glad to see you two together.""He's got a fever." I nodded for him to take over. "The wound probably reopened. Take care of him."Victor leaned against Louis, slipping back into his distant mode. "Thank you, Ms. Cassandra.""Get some rest, Mr. Victor." I took a step back, putting distance between us. "When you're feeling better, we'll set a new date."He said nothing.I went home and collapsed on the couch, my head a mess. My phone buzzed. Louis."His wound did reopen. All patched up now. But I heard you went out with a fox shifter today?"I stared at the text, inexplicably annoyed."Yeah," I typed back. "I need to start a new chapter eventually. Making some friends early isn't a crime, is it?"The typing indicator blinked for a long time."But my brother""Your brother's fine," I re

I jumped.Alex's tail slid off my waist. He stood, outwardly relaxed but coiled with tension."Well, if it isn't Mr. Victor." He drew the name out. "What a coincidence."Victor didn't spare him a glance. His eyes drilled into mine."Cassandra." He repeated the question, every syllable forced through clenched teeth. "Who is he?"Cassandra. That was the first time he'd called me by my first name since losing his memory.A flicker of guilt I couldn't explain."A friend." I cleared my throat. "Alex. He's my friend."Alex raised an eyebrow. His tail tip brushed across my wrist in silent protest of the label.Victor saw it. I noticed his hand at his side, knuckles white."A friend." His tone was strange. "We haven't even dissolved our bond yet, and you're already making friends like this?"What was that supposed to mean? He forgot about me without permission, and now he was trying to control me?"Yeah, I am." Irritation flared. "We're about to be done, aren't we? I need to plan ahead.""And
