Chapter 3

작가: Lotus
I spent an entire week packing.

The walk-in closet was full of clothes Victor had bought me over the years, and half of them still had the tags on.

The night before the signing, I sat by the massive floor-to-ceiling window, hugging my knees, staring up at the starlight dome Victor had built for me.

Somewhere between waking and dreaming, I felt myself sink into a scorching embrace.

"Baby, wearing this little?" Victor's voice curled against my ear, low and rough with laughter.

I looked down and found myself wearing nothing but one of his white dress shirts.

His hand was broad and burning hot, sliding from my waist down to my thigh.

"Didn't we agree on resting tonight?" I protested weakly, even as my body melted against him.

"Mmhm. Resting." He laughed softly, nuzzling into the curve of my neck. "Just holding you while we rest."

But his fingers were already slipping under the hem of the shirt.

Serpents ran colder than humans, but his fingertips felt like fire, drawing shivers everywhere they touched.

"Victor," I curled into myself.

"Shh, don't be scared." He kissed my shoulder, his words slurring against my skin. "I'll be gentle tonight."

Liar.

He didn't know the meaning of the word.

Especially when those two cocks slid inside me at the same time, I felt completely filled up

I was stretched to the absolute limit and I nearly melted right there in his arms.

He held me in front of the floor-to-ceiling window and made me watch the sky he'd built for me.

My body rocked with his, and the stars in my vision swayed and blurred.

"Like it?" He caught my earlobe between his teeth, breathing hot.

I moaned and nodded.

His laugh was low, but he moved harder.

"Good."

"My star should always stay right beside me."

*****

The alarm shrieked, and I jolted awake.

Pale morning light seeped through the window. The room was empty.

I lay there for a few minutes, stunned, then slowly sat up.

What in the world was I dreaming about?

I took a deep breath and shoved the word "forever" out of my head. We were about to be done. No business dreaming about him like that.

While brushing my teeth, I stared at the dark circles under my eyes in the mirror and sighed. Today was a big day.

I changed into a white button-down and jeans—the same outfit I'd been wearing the day we first met. Full circle.

When I arrived at the Center, Louis was already waiting outside. He looked rough, with two massive dark circles under his eyes.

"Cassandra," he started to say something, then stopped himself.

"Don't." I cut him off. "It's happening today."

Louis sighed and led me inside without another word.

Victor was already there.

He heard our footsteps and turned. His eyes landed on me, and he went completely rigid.

"You," his voice came out shredded, "who told you to leave the house dressed like that?"

"What?" I looked down at myself. "What's wrong with it?"

He said nothing. His gaze traced from the collar of my shirt all the way down to where the jeans hugged my legs, and stayed there for a long time.

"Nothing." He finally tore his eyes away, his voice tight. "Let's go in."

He turned first and walked toward the Mark Removal room. I followed.

At the door, the doctor gestured for me to lie on the exam bed. The moment I lay down, something cold pressed against the back of my neck.

"Removing a mate mark is quite painful," the doctor said gently, "especially for humans. You'll need to rest for a while afterward."

I nodded.

"Go ahead."

I closed my eyes and braced for the pain.

"Wait."

Victor's voice. My eyes flew open. He was standing right beside the bed.

"What is it?" the doctor asked.

"I just remembered," he said, "I have an important meeting today."

"What meeting?" Louis frowned. "I don't know about any meeting."

"It was last-minute." Victor grabbed Louis's arm. "I'm sorry, Ms. Cassandra. We'll have to reschedule."

And just like that, he left.

I lay on the exam bed, staring blankly at the empty doorway.

"Well," the doctor looked at me, "we can't proceed with only one party present."

I sat up and touched the back of my neck.

What was Victor playing at? He'd insisted on the divorce, then ran when the moment came. Serpents were impossible to read.

The last night of the trip. We were in a small cabin by the sea.Outside, the sound of waves. Inside, the fire crackled.Victor wrapped his arms around me from behind, chin resting on my shoulder."Cassandra.""Hmm?""I remember," he said softly. "Everything."I turned to face him, not even a little surprised."I was wondering how long you were going to keep up the act."He coughed, embarrassed, and looked away. "Was it that obvious?""Please." I held up a finger. "The amnesia Victor wouldn't remember that I hate shellfish and love berries. He'd just say, cold as ice, 'Cassandra, I want a divorce.'""I'm sorry." His expression turned genuine. "I shouldn't have said I wanted to separate, and I definitely shouldn't have forgotten you."I snorted. "What else?""I shouldn't have made you sad.""So," he dropped to one knee and looked up at me with steady eyes, "I'm going to court you all over again."I stared. "What?""Starting today, I'm going to pursue you the same way I did when we first

I didn't answer right away. Before, his post-amnesia coldness and rejection had sliced through five years of sweetness. But now, this Victor, half lost, half clinging to me, tempting me with the tip of his tail, maybe wasn't so terrifying after all."I'll think about it," I heard myself say, my voice a little distant. He smiled instantly."But I have conditions." I added."First, until I say otherwise, you can't lose control like last night.""Second, when I want to touch your tail, you let me.""Third, stop saying weird things to me."He blinked, seemingly unclear on what counted as "weird things," but nodded. "Deal.""That's it for now." I cleared my throat. "We'll see how you do."He was on me immediately, tail rubbing against my calf. "Can I have a hug? Just one?"I hesitated, then nodded. "One."He pulled me into his arms, rested his chin on top of my head, and let out a contented sigh."And a kiss? Just a quick one." He was already leaning in as he said it.This time, I didn't do

He kicked the front door open, then used his tail to slam it shut behind us.The motion-sensor lights blinked on, making the blood and wounds on his body look even worse."Let go of me. Let me treat your injuries." I struggled against him."They'll heal." He cut me off, leaning down, his hot, wet tongue tracing the shell of my ear. "Want you.""Don't—you're still bleeding." I gasped and turned my head, reaching for the sedative. He misread my resistance. A flash of hurt crossed his eyes, followed by something darker and more desperate. He pressed his forehead against mine, his scorching breath ragged against my face, words tumbling out in fragments. "Don't leave. My Cassandra. I love you so much."The first time this version of Victor had said he loved me.Before I could process it, his kiss crashed down, urgent and practiced, his lips catching mine.My back arched, and what was left of my rational mind dissolved. His hands grew rougher, more frantic. His tail coiled around my ankles

By the time my car turned onto the tree-lined road leading to the Serpent estate, it was fully dark.I rounded the last bend and a fallen tree blocked the road."Great. Perfect timing." I frowned, slowing down to turn around. The headlights swept through the trees. Something moved in the shadows. My heart lurched. I yanked the steering wheel. At the same instant, dark shapes burst out of the woods and surrounded the car.I stared at them in horror. Wolves, their eyes vicious and cold."Well, well." The one in front licked his fangs. "Victor lets his precious little mate wander around alone?"My brain short-circuited, but instinct hit before thought did. I slammed the gas."Grab her.""The serpents killed our brothers. Your life pays for theirs."Several of them lunged at once. The car rocked violently. A fist smashed through the side window, shattering it instantly. A clawed hand reached in, swiping at my throat.I screamed and shrank back.Just before the claws reached me, a streak o

I drove Victor to his temporary residence in the main city.Louis was already waiting at the entrance. The second he saw me helping Victor out of the car, his face lit up."Cassandra." He rushed over. "So glad to see you two together.""He's got a fever." I nodded for him to take over. "The wound probably reopened. Take care of him."Victor leaned against Louis, slipping back into his distant mode. "Thank you, Ms. Cassandra.""Get some rest, Mr. Victor." I took a step back, putting distance between us. "When you're feeling better, we'll set a new date."He said nothing.I went home and collapsed on the couch, my head a mess. My phone buzzed. Louis."His wound did reopen. All patched up now. But I heard you went out with a fox shifter today?"I stared at the text, inexplicably annoyed."Yeah," I typed back. "I need to start a new chapter eventually. Making some friends early isn't a crime, is it?"The typing indicator blinked for a long time."But my brother""Your brother's fine," I re

I jumped.Alex's tail slid off my waist. He stood, outwardly relaxed but coiled with tension."Well, if it isn't Mr. Victor." He drew the name out. "What a coincidence."Victor didn't spare him a glance. His eyes drilled into mine."Cassandra." He repeated the question, every syllable forced through clenched teeth. "Who is he?"Cassandra. That was the first time he'd called me by my first name since losing his memory.A flicker of guilt I couldn't explain."A friend." I cleared my throat. "Alex. He's my friend."Alex raised an eyebrow. His tail tip brushed across my wrist in silent protest of the label.Victor saw it. I noticed his hand at his side, knuckles white."A friend." His tone was strange. "We haven't even dissolved our bond yet, and you're already making friends like this?"What was that supposed to mean? He forgot about me without permission, and now he was trying to control me?"Yeah, I am." Irritation flared. "We're about to be done, aren't we? I need to plan ahead.""And
