"No problem."

I replied instantly, without a second of hesitation.

The businesslike voice on the other end relaxed a little.

"A wise decision."

"In addition to the money, all marital assets will be transferred to your name. If you'd like to leave Serpent territory, I'll arrange someone to handle the transition."

"Sounds good." I said.

The call ended with a beep, and seconds later, the bank notification came through. One billion, deposited.

I stared at that long string of zeros until my vision blurred.

Then I ran to the safe. It was packed with gemstones, glittering like a dragon's hoard.

"Heh heh heh."

Jackpot.

As the most powerful purebred serpent, Victor had inherited the entire Serpent Clan the moment he came of age. Five years of marriage, and he'd not only bought me an estate that rivaled a palace, but because I liked shiny things, he'd hoarded enough gemstones to fill a vault.

And now? All mine.

I rolled across the bed several times, giddy, already mapping out my brilliant future.

Step one, sell all the gems. Step two, find a gentler shifter and live the rest of my life in blissful comfort.

Anyway, absolutely no more two-dick guys.

I grabbed my phone, ready to browse which clan territories were nice to live in.

My eyes landed on the lock screen.

One of the few photos we had together: Victor, stone-faced as always, but with his arm locked tight around my waist.

My fingertip traced across his face on the screen. The phone rang.

Louis. Victor's younger brother and the Serpent Clan's famously elegant second-in-command.

Right now, though, his voice had lost every trace of composure. He sounded like he was falling apart.

"You can't divorce him just because he got hurt."

"He's the one who insisted," I reminded him quietly. "Ever since he lost his memory, he's been pushing for it. Honestly, I figured you'd be happy about this."

"That's because he forgot." Louis's voice shot up. "Think about how he was before. He was crazy about you."

"The first time he saw you, he broke clan law to mark you on the spot. He nearly died from the punishment."

"The bonding ceremony? He obsessed over every single detail. You mentioned you liked the night sky, and he almost emptied half the clan treasury to build that starlight dome."

"Work? Clan duties? Did he give a damn about anything besides you back then? He dumped it all on me."

Louis's voice was angry and frantic, with a hint of genuine hurt underneath.

"Last month, he told me you'd agreed to try for a baby. I already built the crib. And now you're just leaving him? Then what was the point of everything I did? What was the point of him?"

"You humans are so heartless."

Okay. I did feel a little guilty.

But the moment he mentioned babies, my brain flashed to a certain night before Victor lost his memory.

He'd pulled me into his arms, lips brushing my ear, laughing low.

"You're amazing, baby. How about round seven?"

The guilt vanished without a trace.

Victor loved me, yes, but his love was overwhelming, suffocating, all-consuming.

Maybe some distance would be good for both of us.

I sighed.

"He doesn't remember anything right now. Let's just take a break and cool off."

"Then make him remember." Louis was desperate. "Just give me two more weeks. I'll find a way to restore his memory, I swear."

I sighed again. "Louis."

He was practically begging now.

"What guy out there is as devoted and loaded as my brother? It's just two weeks. Can you really stand to watch him get his memories back and realize what he lost? Can you imagine the look on his face?"

Devastated and full of regret. The Victor I knew, dominant, unyielding—would he really make that kind of face?

The thought of him in that kind of pain made something twist in my chest.

Outside the bedroom door, there was the faintest click.

The sound of high-clearance authorization being accepted.

My breath caught. I turned toward the door as it slowly swung open.

A tall man stood there, golden hair, green eyes, staring straight at me.

"So you're my mate."

The last night of the trip. We were in a small cabin by the sea.Outside, the sound of waves. Inside, the fire crackled.Victor wrapped his arms around me from behind, chin resting on my shoulder."Cassandra.""Hmm?""I remember," he said softly. "Everything."I turned to face him, not even a little surprised."I was wondering how long you were going to keep up the act."He coughed, embarrassed, and looked away. "Was it that obvious?""Please." I held up a finger. "The amnesia Victor wouldn't remember that I hate shellfish and love berries. He'd just say, cold as ice, 'Cassandra, I want a divorce.'""I'm sorry." His expression turned genuine. "I shouldn't have said I wanted to separate, and I definitely shouldn't have forgotten you."I snorted. "What else?""I shouldn't have made you sad.""So," he dropped to one knee and looked up at me with steady eyes, "I'm going to court you all over again."I stared. "What?""Starting today, I'm going to pursue you the same way I did when we first

I didn't answer right away. Before, his post-amnesia coldness and rejection had sliced through five years of sweetness. But now, this Victor, half lost, half clinging to me, tempting me with the tip of his tail, maybe wasn't so terrifying after all."I'll think about it," I heard myself say, my voice a little distant. He smiled instantly."But I have conditions." I added."First, until I say otherwise, you can't lose control like last night.""Second, when I want to touch your tail, you let me.""Third, stop saying weird things to me."He blinked, seemingly unclear on what counted as "weird things," but nodded. "Deal.""That's it for now." I cleared my throat. "We'll see how you do."He was on me immediately, tail rubbing against my calf. "Can I have a hug? Just one?"I hesitated, then nodded. "One."He pulled me into his arms, rested his chin on top of my head, and let out a contented sigh."And a kiss? Just a quick one." He was already leaning in as he said it.This time, I didn't do

He kicked the front door open, then used his tail to slam it shut behind us.The motion-sensor lights blinked on, making the blood and wounds on his body look even worse."Let go of me. Let me treat your injuries." I struggled against him."They'll heal." He cut me off, leaning down, his hot, wet tongue tracing the shell of my ear. "Want you.""Don't—you're still bleeding." I gasped and turned my head, reaching for the sedative. He misread my resistance. A flash of hurt crossed his eyes, followed by something darker and more desperate. He pressed his forehead against mine, his scorching breath ragged against my face, words tumbling out in fragments. "Don't leave. My Cassandra. I love you so much."The first time this version of Victor had said he loved me.Before I could process it, his kiss crashed down, urgent and practiced, his lips catching mine.My back arched, and what was left of my rational mind dissolved. His hands grew rougher, more frantic. His tail coiled around my ankles

By the time my car turned onto the tree-lined road leading to the Serpent estate, it was fully dark.I rounded the last bend and a fallen tree blocked the road."Great. Perfect timing." I frowned, slowing down to turn around. The headlights swept through the trees. Something moved in the shadows. My heart lurched. I yanked the steering wheel. At the same instant, dark shapes burst out of the woods and surrounded the car.I stared at them in horror. Wolves, their eyes vicious and cold."Well, well." The one in front licked his fangs. "Victor lets his precious little mate wander around alone?"My brain short-circuited, but instinct hit before thought did. I slammed the gas."Grab her.""The serpents killed our brothers. Your life pays for theirs."Several of them lunged at once. The car rocked violently. A fist smashed through the side window, shattering it instantly. A clawed hand reached in, swiping at my throat.I screamed and shrank back.Just before the claws reached me, a streak o

I drove Victor to his temporary residence in the main city.Louis was already waiting at the entrance. The second he saw me helping Victor out of the car, his face lit up."Cassandra." He rushed over. "So glad to see you two together.""He's got a fever." I nodded for him to take over. "The wound probably reopened. Take care of him."Victor leaned against Louis, slipping back into his distant mode. "Thank you, Ms. Cassandra.""Get some rest, Mr. Victor." I took a step back, putting distance between us. "When you're feeling better, we'll set a new date."He said nothing.I went home and collapsed on the couch, my head a mess. My phone buzzed. Louis."His wound did reopen. All patched up now. But I heard you went out with a fox shifter today?"I stared at the text, inexplicably annoyed."Yeah," I typed back. "I need to start a new chapter eventually. Making some friends early isn't a crime, is it?"The typing indicator blinked for a long time."But my brother""Your brother's fine," I re

I jumped.Alex's tail slid off my waist. He stood, outwardly relaxed but coiled with tension."Well, if it isn't Mr. Victor." He drew the name out. "What a coincidence."Victor didn't spare him a glance. His eyes drilled into mine."Cassandra." He repeated the question, every syllable forced through clenched teeth. "Who is he?"Cassandra. That was the first time he'd called me by my first name since losing his memory.A flicker of guilt I couldn't explain."A friend." I cleared my throat. "Alex. He's my friend."Alex raised an eyebrow. His tail tip brushed across my wrist in silent protest of the label.Victor saw it. I noticed his hand at his side, knuckles white."A friend." His tone was strange. "We haven't even dissolved our bond yet, and you're already making friends like this?"What was that supposed to mean? He forgot about me without permission, and now he was trying to control me?"Yeah, I am." Irritation flared. "We're about to be done, aren't we? I need to plan ahead.""And
