Chapter 20 Set Fire and Burn by Ruth Nalio

Angelica…

I thought about everything Jade and the Vampire had told me as I worked my shift. When it was time for my break, I walked toward the back hall only to have the same Vampire step in front of me. “You know, Vampires have no problems with Demons or Valkyries. I’ve seen the way the bulk of the immortals in this place treat you. You’re more than welcome to spend your break, or lunch, with me.”

“Thanks, but I need some alone time,” I said, not sure that I liked the attention.

“We could be alone together,” he persisted.

Suddenly, a large hand was on the Vampire's shoulder. “She said no, bloodsucker. Go find your meal somewhere else,” Ash said as he shoved the guy away from me and put himself between us.

“We were just talking, Rock Boy,” the Vampire said.

“And now you’re not. Trust me, you push her too far and she’ll set your decaying carcass on fire while I bust out the marshmallows,” Ash told him.

“Fire?” he retorted in a small voice and

Chapter 21 Set Fire and Burn by Ruth NalioAngelica…At the end of my shift, Zander and I went back to his house. “Is there any way to cover up my scent?” I asked as we pulled into his garage.Zander looked at me with a hint of confusion on his face. “Why are you asking about this now?”“Because I just learned tonight that I smell like a Demon and that’s why I keep getting treated like shit,” I countered. He sighed. “There’s not. You can’t change what you smell like any more than you can change what you are.”“A damn Demon half-breed,” I said bitterly as I got out of the car and walked inside.Zander…Angelica had stormed down the hall and into her room to change out of her uniform. Sighing, I got the stuff out for jambalaya, rolled up my sleeves, and started cooking. When she came back out, I told her what I was making, just for conversation that wouldn’t piss her off for a change.“Sounds great. What kind of booze goes best with that?” she asked, still in a bad mood.“Beer,” I said

Chapter 19 Set Fire and Burn by Ruth NalioAngelica…I woke to the smell of coffee and the sound of Zander moving about the kitchen. Sitting up, I realized that I was still on the couch. “Seeing as you didn’t catch the couch on fire, I’m going to say you got a good night’s sleep,” Zander said as he sat a cup of coffee down in front of me.“I don’t even remember falling asleep,” I admitted, a little surprised he’d let me sleep on his couch. He shrugged. “One minute you were laughing and repeating the lines of the movie, the next you were out cold. I thought about moving you to your bed but changed my mind.”“Thank you, for the movies and pizza,” I said as I picked up my coffee.“Cold-hearted murderers like to relax every now and then too,” he said in a flat tone, then turned and went back to the kitchen. There it was, the real Zander. Just when I started thinking he wasn’t such a bad guy after all, he reminded me that he was a monster. Al, Ash, Jade, Del—they were all monsters, and so

Chapter 18 Set Fire and Burn by Ruth NalioAngelica…Jade came in about ten minutes later. “Is it safe?” she asked, gently closing the door behind her.“That depends, you plan on turning into a raging bitch?” I asked, hating that she probably could see that I’d been crying.“Look, Mr. Stone sent me in to see if you were okay. I’m not here to push anyone’s buttons, I’m here for a paycheck. Seeing you put Del in her place was just a perk,” she told me as she plopped down on Zander’s desk and looked at her nails.“Can I ask you a personal question?”“Go for it, but this is your only freebie. All other questions will cost you,” she said with a wink.“Have you ever killed anyone?” I asked nervously.“Damn, I guess you hit just as hard with questions as you do with bar tops. No, I haven’t killed anyone. I’ve cursed a few people, but then again, I’m still young by immortal standards.”“Is asking your age considered a personal question?” I asked with a smile.“Considering I’m hotter than your

Chapter 17 Set Fire and Burn by Ruth NalioAngelica… We got back to The Grey Goose, and I walked down into the club and got out the ginger ale and Glenfiddich, and tossed some ice in a lowball, intending to make my version of a Mamie Taylor.“We’re not supposed to drink on the job,” Jade said, putting her hand on top of the Glen 12.“Look, we both know I’m not a normal employee. In fact, I’m being forced to stay at Zander’s house under the laughable title of guest. Not to mention I just found out that Zander has killed too many people to remember, and the man I thought was the nice guy turns out to have next to no emotion over Zander killing his brother, and these are the two monsters keeping me safe. I need this drink.”Jade pulled the cork top off the Glen and splashed a healthy amount in the glass. “You win, but if Mr. Stone asks, you had the drink made before I got out of the back.”“If Mr. Stone asks, I’ll tell him to go fuck himself,” I said as I filled the rest of the glass w

Chapter 16 Set Fire and Burn by Ruth NalioAngelica…We sat at a table along the wall , and almost immediately had menus placed in front of us. To my horror, the entire thing was in French. Not only had I not taken French in high school, but I’d also only passed my German with a D-. “What do you recommend?” I asked, trying to play it off as too many good choices.“The smoked duck is delicious. Coupled with the sweet potatoes and the wine I plan on ordering, I think you’ll like it. Would you care to start with a salad?” he asked, glancing up from his menu.“Do you have normal salads? That’s the only bad thing about Olive Garden. I’m a garden salad with ranch kind of gal,” I asked, trying to sound less in over my head.“If that’s your idea of Italian food, you might be disappointed, but yes, I can make sure you get a standard salad,” he said with a smile.“I guess I’ll have to let you order for me and show a little faith then,” I said with a smile. “The duck it is,” he said with a smil
