Chapter 6

Zander…

I scooped her up into my arms as she fell under my spell. I turned to Alatap. “She’s my charge, and I’ll be damned if I let you corrupt her,” I said before turning to walk away.

“She wouldn’t be happy if you forgot her purse.” I gritted my teeth and turned around to see him holding out her handbag. I readjusted her so that she was hanging over my shoulder and snatched her bag from the demon. “Do you even know what kind of demon she is?” he asked as he eyed her in a way that made me want to growl, so I did. He smiled, and I turned my back on him. “She’s a Chaos Demon mixed with a Valkyrie,” he said as I left the building.

Angelica…

I woke up on the same bed I’d left hours ago. It took me only a few seconds to realize that Zander had, again, put me to sleep with his magic. This did not make me happy. What had happened while I was out? What about Al? Had Zander killed him? He sure had looked like he was going to.

Getting up with a sigh, I rubbed my face and tried to sha

Chapter 23 Set Fire and Burn by Ruth NalioAngelica…After they left, I started quietly clearing the table and loading the dishwasher. “How are you handling meeting your grandparents?” Zander asked as he leaned around me and put a bowl in the dishwasher.“A little overwhelmed. I mean, they did both come in guns blazing,” I said with a small smile.“That they did,” he said as he looked at me quizzically.“What?” I asked, wondering if there was food on my face or something.“When you attacked Loki, you were pissed off, not afraid,” he commented.I put another dish in the dishwasher and closed it before standing to look at Zander. “I think I might have been a healthy mix of both,” I admitted.“I was just wondering if being around Loki and Siri made your powers stronger for some reason. Or if they are still growing.”“Great, that’s just what I need is to catch fire every time I get pissed too,” I replied as I crossed my arms and leaned back against the counter next to him.“I’ll tell Ash

Chapter 22 Set Fire and Burn by Ruth NalioZander…“Where is she?” he demanded as I quickly put myself between him and Angelica, who was just inside the kitchen. “Where is my mate?” Before I could respond, he had grabbed me and slammed me up against the wall. “If you’ve harmed her, I’ll kill you.”“Zander!” Angelica squeaked and dropped her glass on the floor as she burst into flames.Anger flooded through me, and I felt my features shift to that of a Gargoyle. I punched Loki right in the face as he looked at the flaming Angelica. He staggered backward. “Bloody calm down before you catch the kitchen on fire!” I yelled at Angelica as I threw another punch at Loki, who ducked and threw one of his own, sending me staggering back into the wall. I’d be damned if he wasn’t strong.“I know Siri is here, Gargoyle. Forget about your Demon and tell me where my mate is!” Loki said as he threw another punch. The house began to shake. “I’m not a Demon!” Angelica said as she threw herself at Loki,

Chapter 21 Set Fire and Burn by Ruth NalioAngelica…At the end of my shift, Zander and I went back to his house. “Is there any way to cover up my scent?” I asked as we pulled into his garage.Zander looked at me with a hint of confusion on his face. “Why are you asking about this now?”“Because I just learned tonight that I smell like a Demon and that’s why I keep getting treated like shit,” I countered. He sighed. “There’s not. You can’t change what you smell like any more than you can change what you are.”“A damn Demon half-breed,” I said bitterly as I got out of the car and walked inside.Zander…Angelica had stormed down the hall and into her room to change out of her uniform. Sighing, I got the stuff out for jambalaya, rolled up my sleeves, and started cooking. When she came back out, I told her what I was making, just for conversation that wouldn’t piss her off for a change.“Sounds great. What kind of booze goes best with that?” she asked, still in a bad mood.“Beer,” I said

Chapter 20 Set Fire and Burn by Ruth NalioAngelica…I thought about everything Jade and the Vampire had told me as I worked my shift. When it was time for my break, I walked toward the back hall only to have the same Vampire step in front of me. “You know, Vampires have no problems with Demons or Valkyries. I’ve seen the way the bulk of the immortals in this place treat you. You’re more than welcome to spend your break, or lunch, with me.”“Thanks, but I need some alone time,” I said, not sure that I liked the attention.“We could be alone together,” he persisted.Suddenly, a large hand was on the Vampire's shoulder. “She said no, bloodsucker. Go find your meal somewhere else,” Ash said as he shoved the guy away from me and put himself between us.“We were just talking, Rock Boy,” the Vampire said.“And now you’re not. Trust me, you push her too far and she’ll set your decaying carcass on fire while I bust out the marshmallows,” Ash told him.“Fire?” he retorted in a small voice and

Chapter 19 Set Fire and Burn by Ruth NalioAngelica…I woke to the smell of coffee and the sound of Zander moving about the kitchen. Sitting up, I realized that I was still on the couch. “Seeing as you didn’t catch the couch on fire, I’m going to say you got a good night’s sleep,” Zander said as he sat a cup of coffee down in front of me.“I don’t even remember falling asleep,” I admitted, a little surprised he’d let me sleep on his couch. He shrugged. “One minute you were laughing and repeating the lines of the movie, the next you were out cold. I thought about moving you to your bed but changed my mind.”“Thank you, for the movies and pizza,” I said as I picked up my coffee.“Cold-hearted murderers like to relax every now and then too,” he said in a flat tone, then turned and went back to the kitchen. There it was, the real Zander. Just when I started thinking he wasn’t such a bad guy after all, he reminded me that he was a monster. Al, Ash, Jade, Del—they were all monsters, and so

  • Set Fire and Burn   Chapter 18

Chapter 18 Set Fire and Burn by Ruth NalioAngelica…Jade came in about ten minutes later. “Is it safe?” she asked, gently closing the door behind her.“That depends, you plan on turning into a raging bitch?” I asked, hating that she probably could see that I’d been crying.“Look, Mr. Stone sent me in to see if you were okay. I’m not here to push anyone’s buttons, I’m here for a paycheck. Seeing you put Del in her place was just a perk,” she told me as she plopped down on Zander’s desk and looked at her nails.“Can I ask you a personal question?”“Go for it, but this is your only freebie. All other questions will cost you,” she said with a wink.“Have you ever killed anyone?” I asked nervously.“Damn, I guess you hit just as hard with questions as you do with bar tops. No, I haven’t killed anyone. I’ve cursed a few people, but then again, I’m still young by immortal standards.”“Is asking your age considered a personal question?” I asked with a smile.“Considering I’m hotter than your
