Valeria's POV
I took the morning off to see my grandmother in the hospital, like I usually did.I found her sitting up in bed, her nose nearly touching the magazine she was reading. As I watched, she stifled a yawn. I exhaled in relief, glad to see that she was in good form today. I loved this woman. She had raised me because my parents were not in the picture.I didn't know why they had abandoned me. Whenever I tried to ask her questions about my parents, my grandma would go awfully quiet, and she would tell me that my parents and I were not meant to be together or to know things about each other. But I knew she was not happy with the way things were because her greatest wish was for me to get married and start a family of my own before she died. She was always harping on that. She looked around, caught sight of me, and smiled."Come in, pumpkin. Come in," she called in her high, tremulous voice, as she waved me inside. "Why are you standing over there?""Hi, grams." I walked over to her hospital bed, planted a kiss on her weathered cheek. "You look really good today.""I feel good too, though I'm kind of sleepy now.""I can tell."She yawned, set the magazine down, adjusted the pillows she was lying on."Tell me all about what you have been up to, dear," she said."I'll tell you later. I can tell that you are really sleepy, so sleep."My grandma gave me a conspirational wink. "I didn't take a nap, though Ivy thought I did."I grinned. "I won't tell her if you sleep now."She nodded and closed her eyes. In a thrice, her regular breathing told me that she was asleep. Her nap was sure to be a long one. I left her hospital room after watching her for a while. I met Ivy and another nurse coming out of a ward after doing their rounds. Ivy smiled and gestured for me to wait for her on the hospital grounds. I did not have to wait long before she walked towards me."Hi, Val," she said."Ivy." We hugged briefly. She pulled back to look at me. "You know, I'm still in awe of you for ending that ridiculous arrangement with Dimitri."I sat and waved her statement away, doing my best to ignore the pain that lanced through my heart whenever I thought of Dimitri."Let's not talk about that anymore," I said. "Let's talk about the guy you set me up with. What's he like? Tall or really tall? Good looking or-""Whoa there! Hold your horses. It's a blind date, and I want you eager and anticipatory. No way I'm spilling the beans now."I pouted. "That's not fair at all.""Life's not fair," Ivy replied with a twinkle.I let out a laugh and glanced at my watch, got to my feet. "I have to go to the office now. It's almost noon. I'll see you around."Ivy and I said our goodbyes, and I headed to the office. As I made my way inside the building, I caught sight of Dimitri's broad back as he talked to the receptionist. She saw me, jerked her chin in my direction and said something to him. Dimitri turned immediately, and looked at me with blazing eyes. I swallowed. What have I done now?'There she is," he said, as he angrily walked up to me. "You certainly took your sweet time getting to work today, didn't you? Do you realize that the company is very busy at this time?""Yes, but-""And yet you decide to take some hours off work without letting me know, without checking if that was okay with me.""But-""Who on earth does that?"Determined to speak this time, I raised my voice slightly. "I have done this several times before when I went to check on my grandma. You never had issues with it before. If-He put up a hand, effectively cutting my words shut."Enough with the excuses," he barked. "Get to work and see me in my office in five minutes."He turned on his heel and stomped away. With my own mood soured, I was in Dimitri's office in exactly five minutes. He was working on his computer when I came in, and didn't bother to raise his head."You will handle the Rosy William's account. Make sure you finish everything concerning the account before you leave my employ. Take the files in front of you. Work on them."The files arranged in a pile on his table were so much. I blinked in surprise. "All of them?"He said nothing for a while. Then he raised his head, fixed me with a piercing stare. "Yes. All of them. Is there a problem?"My heart sank. The Rosy William's account was the toughest account the company was handling right now. Dimitri knew this and yet he was foisting the workload on me."No," I replied with a strained smile, and snatched up the files. "I still want to remind you about the issue of getting a new secretary that will replace me as soon as possible."Other than the look of anger that flashed across his face as Dimitri typed, he gave no indication that he had heard me. I didn't leave my office for the rest of the day. Work kept me very busy. When next I registered what the time was, I realized that I had a date in a couple of hours. I packed up my things hurriedly and left. I dashed home, took a bath and slipped into a dress I had put aside for this evening. At the restaurant, I went straight to the table whose number Ivy had texted. Seated there was a dark haired man dressed in a pin striped suit who looked very familiar. It looked like-"Noah?"The man turned, his eyes widened as he saw me. He shot to his feet. "Valeria?" Noah pulled me into a hug which I returned. "Wow. Fancy seeing you here.""Yeah. Wait a minute. Are you my er- What are you doing-""-here? I'm on a blind date.""No way. That means you're my date."I stared in surprise. I never expected my blind date would be Noah. He was my ex boyfriend at the university. We drifted apart and eventually broke up after he went abroad for further studies. With a smile, he drew up a chair for me, waved me into it."This is quite the coincidence, but a good one," he remarked. "You look stunning, by the way."I smiled. "As do you.""Let's order. Boy! do we have a lot to catch up on."We ordered some food and wine, which soon arrived."It's been so long, Noah," I said as we ate."Uh huh. It feels like ages since we were in college. Remember how you always used to show up late to classes, until Professor Varner took it upon himself to always have you give a summary of his lectures in front of the whole class each time you came late." He chuckled.I rolled my eyes. "And you didn't make it easy for me. You were always at the back, making the most ridiculous and funny faces, just to make me laugh. You were supposed to be my moral support, you know."Noah grinned unrepentantly. "What can I say? You always looked really pretty whenever you stood there, blushing in embarrassment. I wanted to see you blush for a little longer."We laughed over that. After a while, I asked, "You look like you've done very well for yourself. What do you do now?""Oh. I'm er- the CEO of Alfred Group-"Surprised, I laid down my fork. "The famous Alfred group?" He nodded. "Wow. You're really doing well for yourself."Coincidentally, the Alfred Group was Dimitri company's biggest competitor. As I thought about how today seemed to be a day for coincidences, Noah's hand slid across the table to grip mine."I missed you, Valeria," he murmured. “So damn much,”Dimitri's POVEven with Summer sitting right in front of me, I couldn't keep my thoughts on our dinner date. In my mind's eye, I kept seeing Valeria's green eyes. I just couldn't stop thinking about her. Valeria still wasn't backing down. She still reminded me that I had to get a replacement. Her attitude was beyond annoying. "...want?"With a start, I realized someone close to me had spoken. I turned to see Summer, and a waiter who I hadn't realized was there, staring at me curiously. I looked from the waiter to Summer, wondering who had spoken. "Er- I didn't quite catch that. What did you say?" Summer frowned worriedly, leaned forward and placed her hand on my cheek. "I was asking you what you wanted to order, but are you okay, love? You've been very absentminded. Is something bothering you?"While she talked, the waiter retreated and stood at a respectful distance. "No. Nothing is the matter." I caught her hand in mine and squeezed it reassuringly. "Some thoughts about business
Valeria Dimitri's closeness in the small space the restroom afforded made my breathing quicken. My heart raced so fast that I almost felt faint. I felt his breath fan my cheek, and heard him breathe in deeply. I nervously licked my suddenly dry lips as he continued to stalk me. Though every cell in my body screamed at me to back away, I stood my ground. "What's it to you?" I asked defiantly. Dimitri's eyes flashed, narrowed. A growl came from deep within his chest. He tried to keep it in by clenching his teeth. It was as though he was struggling to keep a wild animal within him reined in. In spite of myself, I shivered and took a step back. I had never seen him so furious before. "Answer me," he urged in a soft, menacing tone. "I have nothing to say to you." I cleared my throat, hating how shaky my voice sounded. "Whatever is going on between Noah and I is none of your business. You lost the right to ask me any question of that sort when you broke the terms of our contract. We a
Valeria'S POVOnce Noah and I were in the car, I let out a huge sigh of relief. I had fought the urge to look over my shoulder on the way here when Noah, hands on the small of my back, had ushered me out of the place. Dimitri's expression had been a sight. His face had contorted in rage. He had looked as though he wanted to rip Noah's arm from off his shoulders. I shuddered at the thought of handling that situation on my own, what with my hopeless attraction to Dimitri and his ability to still make me nervous. "Are you cold?" Noah said from beside me. He touched my shoulder lightly. "No. No I'm not." To assure him I was fine, I flashed him a smile. He gave one right back. "You'll be going home now, I expect.""Yes," I said a little too quickly. My tone had him raising a brow. But he nodded, gestured to his driver, whose eyes I met in the rearview mirror. "Tell him your address," Noah told me. I did. The car shot forward and we were on our way. I couldn't resist taking one last
Valeria'S POVIt took quite a while for me to regain my composure. Dimitri had done this on purpose. He knew that the appearance of Sasha would shake me up. The girl looked like she belonged on a runway as a model, instead of at an office. His eyes lit up with excitement the longer I remained silent. He shifted in his seat, leaning forward and keeping those grey eyes trained on me. He did not even have the decency to pretend that this was not another one of his manipulative moves. With some effort, I turned back to Sasha. She still held on to her smile, but it had gotten strained, and there was a puzzled frown on her face as she wondered why I wasn't responding. I didn't think I would ever get used to the sight of her. Now, I summoned up all my willpower, reminded myself of Ivy's counsel that I shouldn't let Dimitri affect me so much, and forced a smile for Sasha. She relaxed a little. I shook her hand, still held on to my strained smile which I could feel slipping every second. Sa
Valeria'S POV Once I was sure that everything at the office was running smoothly, and would continue to do so even though I was absent for the day, I took the afternoon off to visit my grandmother. At least, this time, Dimitri would have nothing to complain about. Even if he did, I wouldn't let him intimidate me with his bellyaching. "Ms Morre," the friendly nurse at the reception greeted as I passed by her station. "Hello," I replied. "She's awake and alert. Go right in."The nurse then continued writing in a book, dismissing me. I went to my grandma's room. The moment I stepped in, my nostrils were assailed with the sweet fragrance of flowers. The source was from the large, beautiful bouquet of lilies, her favourite flowers, in my grandmother's lap. With a pleased smile on her face, she fingered the delicate petals, pressed it to her nose and inhaled deeply. "Hi, grandma," I called out. She dragged her gaze from the flowers to my face. "Hello, Valeria. Come on and sit down." S
Valeria’s POV"What?" I exclaimed through a throat that felt like it had been clogged with sawdust. I didn't know that I had fallen backwards into the chair until Ivy put out a hand to steady me. The bottom fell out of my world. Pregnant? How could I possibly be pregnant? I tried to do a bit of calculation to remember when last I had seen my period, but my head was in a whirl and I could not think straight. Horrified, I stared up at Ivy, who held my hand tightly. I convulsively squeezed her hand. "Ivy... you wouldn't lie or joke about something like this, would you? If it's some kind of joke-"Ivy looked disgusted at the very idea."You know me better than that," she said. "I would never joke about something like that in the first place.""Okay. But- but are you sure about the results? Maybe there was some sort of mixup. Mistakes can happen, results can get swapped, or maybe you need to take another sample or- or-"With a sigh, she sat beside me. "I know this is very hard for you t
Valeria’s POVI marched back to the spot where I had been standing with Noah, but he was no longer there. The mass of people to my left briefly parted, and I saw him, talking and laughing with a group of important looking people.Good. I wanted to be on my own for a while. I took a glass of champagne, leaned against the bar, sipped it and stewed in anger. The nerve of Damian, talking to me like that!I was careful though, to keep my face expressionless. I nodded, smiled at those who caught my eye. Again, I raised the glass to my lips. Nothing came out. I needed another drink. Badly. There was a waiter up ahead. The place was noisy and he would not hear me if I called out. I took a couple of steps towards him and stopped. The ground seemed to undulate under my feet. The room spun. I clutched the glass in my hand tightly, hoping, praying that I wouldn't fall and disgrace myself. "Hey. Are you okay?"Relieved, I sagged against Noah as I felt his arm slide around my waist. "I guess so
Dimitri’s POVI watched in horror as Valeria reeled and began to drop like a pack of cards. I was running towards her before I was conscious that I was moving, screaming her name again and again. Just as I got closer, I slid to her on my knees and caught her just because she could hit the floor. "Valeria. Valeria," I called frantically, shaking her and trying to tap her away. She lay still and very pale in my arms."Help," I called again, seconds before remembering that we were the only ones on this floor, probably the only ones in the building. I swore.I pressed trembling fingers to her wrist and checked her pulse. It was slow, but it was still there. I drew in a shaky breath of relief, scrambled to my feet and ran to the elevator. Glancing nervously at her, I ran out of the building. The doorman was barely in time to open the door. I laid her gently in the backseat of my car and zoomed off to the nearest hospital. "Hey! Emergency," I shouted as soon as I got out of the car, ala
