Chapter 5

Author: Ivy
When I woke up, I was already in the hospital. The doctor frowned at me and asked why I had waited so long to come in.

I didn't know how to answer.

As soon as I returned to Felix's house, I packed my things and moved out. Then I sold the ring I'd worn alone for years.

It was one of a matching pair we'd bought for our fourth anniversary.

Yet no matter how much I begged, Felix never wore his.

"Can you stop bothering me about stupid things like this? Don't you have anything better to do?"

That was why almost no one even knew we were a couple.

Then, one day, Felix suddenly started wearing a ring.

That same day, Gracie posted a photo on Instagram.

"A gift from a certain someone! So beautiful."

I recognized the hand holding hers immediately.

Felix.

Thinking about it now, I almost wanted to laugh.

I had deliberately booked a hotel near the airport so I could get some rest before my flight. A loud banging on my door jolted me awake.

"Eunice, open the door! We need to talk! How long are you planning to keep this up? Come home already!"

My head throbbed. I hadn't expected Felix to find me so quickly.

I opened the door.

Felix grabbed my arm, his bloodshot eyes fixed on me.

The scent of sweet perfume clung to him.

Gracie's perfume.

“Eunice, I never agreed to break up!”

Then his gaze fell on my bare hand, and his expression changed.

"Where's your ring? What happened to it? You never take that thing off!"

I looked at him blankly.

"We broke up. Why would I keep wearing it?"

He stared at me, as if trying to figure out whether I was serious.

Then he scoffed, his earlier panic disappearing behind a look of contempt.

"So this is all an act because you're jealous of Gracie again? There's no way you'd actually leave me. You're just trying to get my attention. Nice performance. You almost fooled me."

I pressed a hand to my stomach and clenched my jaw against the pain.

"You really think too highly of yourself. Why would I still love you?"

"Eunice, there really is nothing between me and Lix."

Only then did I notice Gracie crouching nearby.

"Eunice, I'll beg if I have to. Please don't leave Lix because of me."

She rushed over, grabbed my wrist, and bowed deeply.

Felix pulled her upright immediately.

The sudden movement knocked me aside, sending me crashing into the door.

I gasped as pain shot through me.

"Why are you bowing to her? She only acts like this because we've spoiled her too much."

Just then, the rosary bracelet on my wrist snapped. Beads scattered across the floor.

I froze. Then I quickly crouched down to gather them.

Felix's mother had given me the bracelet when we first started dating.

She had held my hand and carefully wrapped it around my wrist.

"I wish you both well," she had said.

Maybe it breaking now was a sign.

Felix stared at the beads scattered across the floor and fell silent.

He opened his mouth as if to say something, then stopped.

"Eunice, come home when you're done being angry. We'll be waiting for you. I still owe you your seventh-anniversary gift."

I picked up the beads one by one, then gave him a bitter smile.

Before he could say anything else, I threw them at him.

"We're done."

I shoved them both out and slammed the door.

Then I opened the window and stared out at the dark night. Without hesitation, I sent an email.

A reply arrived soon after.

"Your report has been received and is under review."

One year later, I've made a name for myself as a designer, and my career is on the rise.More importantly, I finally live exactly the way I want.I cut my hair short because I like it, even though Felix always hated it. I paint my nails black because I want to.Every morning, I grab breakfast at the café downstairs. In the evenings, I walk my landlady's dog. On weekends, Enora and I try whatever new adventure sport catches our attention. Then one day, I happened to see a news report from back home.Grant Group had changed hands. The board had forced Felix out and made him sell all his shares. After that, he vanished from the public eye.But every so often, a postcard showed up in my mailbox. It always came in a sealed white envelope with the same familiar handwriting on the front. And every postcard showed the Maldives."The Maldives really is beautiful.""Can I still see the moon that once belonged to me?""The sea is vast, but only now do I realize your eyes were deeper still."The p

Kensington, London.Enora and I sat outside a café, sipping coffee after work.Flowers covered the building's facade, turning the terrace into a small garden.More men had been hitting on me in the past few days.Enora shot me a teasing grin."Eunice, just pick one. Hell, you could date a different guy every day." She leaned closer and whispered, "The landlady won't care if you bring one home."Her wicked grin made me laugh. When I was with Felix, I gave up far too much for him.I turned down my dream job and left my friends behind. Now, here I was in London, doing just fine on my own.As for men..."Haven't found one good enough yet." I rested my chin on my hand and watched the city go by.Red buses rolled past while the Thames glowed under the setting sun. I couldn't help smiling."Eunice."My smile disappeared. The last person I wanted to see was standing in front of me.Felix looked exhausted and unshaven. He was wearing the same white shirt he'd worn the day we first met."I've mi

Felix was ordered to pay massive restitution. After that, he seemed to lose all sense of purpose. He locked himself inside the house and drank himself unconscious night after night.Eventually, a stomach bleed nearly killed him. If his assistant hadn't found him in time, he might not have survived.Felix checked himself out of the hospital the very next day.He stopped attending board meetings and spent every day shut inside the house. The curtains stayed closed, leaving every room dark.It was so quiet that even the sound of his own breathing seemed deafening.Felix wandered from room to room, searching for Eunice like a madman. He still couldn't accept that she was really gone.He drained bottle after bottle of whiskey."Eunice, my head hurts. Make me some lemon tea."Silence.Then, after a long moment, reality would hit him again.Eunice wasn't there anymore. It happened over and over, every single day.He called her number again and again. In just a few days, he'd called her more t

"Eunice!"Felix grabbed me and refused to let go."Let go."I struggled. The sweet perfume all over him turned my stomach. He ignored me and only held on tighter."Eunice, don't go. I was wrong. Please. Can't we go back to the way we were?"I reached for his hand.Felix's eyes immediately lit up.Then, while he was caught off guard, I shoved him away.I pulled out a tissue and wiped my hand without a trace of emotion."There's no going back."He stared at me, his face stiffening at my obvious disgust. When he spoke again, his voice was hoarse."I'll come home on time. Whenever you're upset, I'll bring you green grape cake. I'll stay with you until you fall asleep. I'll never leave you alone again."His voice faded with each promise.I gave a scornful laugh."So you knew all along."The moment he tried to come closer, I stepped out of reach.Felix froze as if I'd slapped him. Then he carefully tried to explain."It was Gracie. She lied to me about everything. I only believed her because

Felix couldn't focus on anything. The minutes crawled by, and his unease only grew.Gracie snuggled against him, clearly unhappy with his distraction.Suddenly, he pushed her away and got to his feet."Something is wrong with Eunice."He called his assistant immediately."Find out what Eunice has been doing these past few days."Gracie grabbed his arm before he could leave. Her face immediately crumpled into a pitiful expression."Didn't you say you'd stay with me?"Felix hesitated.A dark look flashed in Gracie's eyes. Then his phone rang."Mr. Grant, Eunice Parker bought a ticket to London three days ago for a flight tomorrow. She just changed it. Her flight leaves in two hours."Felix's heart lurched."Impossible! She loves me! There's no way she'd really leave!"He called her immediately, but she didn't answer.Panicking now, he sent her a message. Not delivered.Felix stared at the screen, frozen."There's one more thing," his assistant said nervously.
