Chapter 1

Author: Roaring River
From 1975 to 2025, I was asleep. I had been the only successful subject to have ever survived a cryonics experiment.

With the appearance of a 20-year-old, I went to find my affluent younger brother and take back my place in the family. Suddenly, a barrage of comments appeared before me.

"This female lead is brainless. Her brother took her small shop and turned it into a business empire. People change. He no longer remembers her, so why would he want to reconnect with her?"

"Exactly! The Slater family is falling apart over the inheritance. They'll kill her if she shows her face before them!"

"Michael Shaw truly loves her. If she marries him, her happiness is guaranteed."

Just then, Michael gets down on one knee right in front of me.

"Zoe, the Slaters are too dangerous. Don't go back, okay? Marry me instead. I'll look after you and keep you safe for the rest of my life."

His words moved me. But before I could respond, his thoughts sounded in my ear. "System, did you post the fake comments?"

"The fake comments are up, Michael. But are you really going to marry Zoe Slater? According to the original script, once Anna Slater becomes the heiress to the Slaters, you can live a luxurious, worry-free life with her."

"I gave Zoe's heiress position to Anna. I owe her, and I'll spend my life making it up to her. As for Anna, she got what she wanted. She'll be happy even without me."

I snapped back to reality after overhearing Michael's thoughts. I thought we were in sync, but he had just been playing mind games with me.

He was wrong, though. I had always been a career-driven woman. Love was nothing more than background noise to me. It could never block my path.

Michael noticed my silence. With eyes filled with emotion, he slid a ring onto my finger. "Zoe, trust me. I'll protect you for the rest of my life."

I yanked off the ring and threw it at his face. "Save it. I'm going to meet my family."

Michael pressed his lips together. His eyes reddened as he stared at me.

Comments scrolled chaotically in front of me.

"The devoted male lead just got rejected. If Zoe shows up tonight, Anna will have her fed to the dogs!"

"Seriously, what's wrong with her? Why would she throw away a good life for death?"

I ignored them all and lifted my foot to leave.

"Zoe." Michael grabbed my arm. He sounded desperate as he said, "Don't waste your time. Even if you go, Mr. Slater won't acknowledge you as his granddaughter, much less hand over the family fortune!"

"Why not?" I demanded.

He sighed. "Because he built his empire off your family's pickle shop. Once he became the city's richest man, he completely forgot about his roots. The entire Slater family wishes you'd die out there. Why would he ever hand you anything?"

His face was lined with worry, but it only amused me. I shook his hand off. "That's my business. No matter the outcome, I have to try."

More comments scrolled furiously across my view.

"Is she crazy? Is money worth more than her life? She's begging for misery."

"Michael really cares about her. Poor guy. He's being thrown away. She'll regret this one day!"

The louder they screamed, the faster I walked toward the villa.

I caught Michael's confused thoughts behind me.

"Why is she so determined to meet her family? Does she know that Mr. Slater has been waiting for her all along?"

"Michael, what do we do now?"

"Just play it by ear. I won't let her succeed," he thought.

Using the address, I tracked down my younger brother's house.

There were plenty of people coming and going. I was dressed well enough to blend in, so I slipped inside without trouble.

Suddenly, a gorgeously dressed woman raised her hand to block me. Her gaze swept over me. "Who are you? I don't recall you being invited to this family dinner."

The comments started appearing.

"The ruthless female rival has arrived! Zoe is doomed. Serves her right for trying to go back!"

"That's Anna Slater. She's Mr. Slater Senior's precious granddaughter and was raised by him to be the heiress. If she didn't have sharp claws, she wouldn't have gotten this far."

Anna curled her fingers into a fist. Her eyes burned with rage as she glared at me. I ignored her stare and walked straight toward Daniel, reaching up to untie the ropes around him.Suddenly, a gunshot cracked through the air. The bullet grazed my arm, and I winced in pain.Anna was aiming the gun at me. Her expression dripped with mockery."I was just playing along with you. I can't believe you took it seriously," she sneered. "Your lives, your money—I'll take it all."Slowly, she raised the muzzle until it was pointed right at my heart."Anna!" Michael panicked and rushed forward to grab the gun, but the guards yanked him back before he could get close to her.She shot him a cold glare. "Get your head straight. She's just a mission. Besides, the mission failed, so why do you still care? Interfere again, and I'll kill you too."I clutched the wound and glanced at the time on my watch. I started to count down in my head.Anna narrowed her eyes. Just as her finger tightened on t

"I gave you many chances, Zoe. I even warned you with the comments just now, but you never listened. You just had to walk into your own death, didn't you?" Michael remarked.Anna scoffed. "She won't cry until she's on her deathbed. If that's what she wants, I'll give it to her today."When I saw her grab a gun from the table, my whole body froze. Nevertheless, I forced myself to remain calm. "Daniel has treated you so well since you were young. He's innocent in all of this. If you've got a grudge, take it out on me.""Innocent? Him?" Anna cackled like she had just heard the funniest joke in the world. "Zoe, you don't have the slightest clue. Do you know what it was like growing up, always being pressured to be recognized as the heir to the Slater family's fortune?"While other children were out playing, I was locked in my room practicing the piano. To make sure I didn't lose the spotlight, I studied until my eyes burned. I pushed myself until three in the morning without getting an

Skyler's voice grew quieter and quieter. I gave him a reassuring smile and said, "What's broken is broken. Out with the old and in with the new. Skyler, do you know how to paint?"He froze. "Yes, I'm an art major. But how did you know?""Zoe has a gift for reading people. She can guess anyone's profession nine out of ten times. She's suggesting that you paint her a new piece to replace the broken one, and we'll call the matter settled. The question is, are you willing to do it?" Daniel's eyes were filled with kindness.Skyler's eyes turned red as he nodded quickly. "Of course I am. Grandpa said that we owe everything we have today to you. I've always seen you as my role model. Being able to paint something for you would make me really happy!""This kid really knows how to talk." I couldn't help but laugh.Daniel nodded in agreement. Just then, a housekeeper stepped forward with a cup of medicine. "Mr. Slater Senior, it's time to take your medicine."I blinked in surprise. "Are yo

Anna let out a sigh of relief, but I quickly changed the subject."In the Slater family, we've always been fair. Since Anna made a mistake, she should be punished." I turned to her. "I heard that the second Slater rule states that if you were rude to your elders, you must kneel before them and apologize repeatedly. So let's follow that. Does anyone have an objection?"Everyone glanced at each other, but no one dared to speak."That's great! Well said, Zoe!" Daniel nodded in approval. He even clapped for me. "We'll do exactly as she says. Anna, remember that each apology should be loud enough for everyone to hear. Only then will your apology be accepted."Anna's smile froze. "Grandpa, I…""Enough. We've decided on the punishment." Daniel ignored her and helped me onto the couch instead. As my eyes swept across the hall, I noticed that Michael had slipped away at some point. When I turned my gaze back, the security guards had brought Anna before me, forcing her to kneel with a loud

Everyone looked up as Skyler focused the camera on the DNA results. He announced, "Grandpa and Ms. Zoe are related!"Daniel's cane clattered to the ground. He rose to his feet with the help of his aides and staggered toward me. He clutched my hands with trembling fingers. "Z-Zoe? Is it really you? You've come back.""It's me. I'm home."I straightened my shoulders and scanned the room. The same people who had mocked me moments earlier now lowered their heads. They were afraid to make a sound. My gaze flicked to Anna. She was biting her lip. I chuckled before saying, "Now that the truth is out, shouldn't we also get to the bottom of what happened with that first result?"Every head turned toward her, causing her to jolt. Her glare had vanished into pitiful tears."Great-aunt Zoe, I don't know what happened," she pleaded. "It must have been the doctor. He has worked for the Slaters for over ten years, and I recently found out that he'd been embezzling our money. He probably forged

"I've waited 50 years for my sister. I have one foot in the grave, so I shouldn't continue hoping that she'll come back. I won't press the matter further. Go on now. Don't make this mess any worse," Daniel said.Anna proudly lifted her head. Her voice dripped with scorn as she said, "You're just a scammer. The results won't change, no matter how many tests you take. Now get out of here!"Suddenly, the boy from the corner of the room spoke up. "Grandpa, let her take the test again. She really is our aunt.""Shut up, Skyler. No one asked for your opinion!" Anna roared.Skyler Slater ignored her and stepped closer to Daniel. He dropped to his knees. His eyes were bloodshot as he pleaded. "Grandpa, no one but you and I has ever seen her portrait. You forgot her face because of your illness, but I remember it clearly. I broke that frame myself."Please, let me take the sample back to the hospital and run the test again!"Anna clenched her fists. She stormed forward and struck Skyler h
