LOGIN“For the last time, Miss Lunaris, are you sure that you haven’t done anything to provoke Miss Alexa?” It was the third time that Greyson, our school principal, interrogated me. He was looking at me dubiously through his thick rectangular-framed glasses as I sat across from him.
It took all of my willpower not to scream at him at this point. Somehow, I was starting to feel like he was trying to pin all the blame onto me while I was clearly the victim here of Alexa’s assault.
“No,” I repeated the answer that I told him a few minutes ago. “As someone who can’t morph into a wolf, there’s no reason for me to pick a fight that I can’t win,” I said to him. “And I already told you the reason. Alexa was emotional that I was the last pick for the team in the obstacle course.”
Greyson still wasn’t convinced. Instead, he now took my words to grill me once more. “Did you really win the race?”
“W-What does that mean?” I ask, my voice hardens at the question. To me, it sounded like he was doubting me.
Greyson folds his hands on his desk as he studies me. “I don’t want to accuse you or anything, Miss Lunaris, but it is unheard of that a non-shifter like you can easily outrun a werewolf.”
I blink and gape at him in disbelief. “Are you saying that I cheated?”
“No, no.” He says calmly and raises his hands in a gesture of innocence. “Those were not my words. You said them yourself. All I wanted to know is how can someone of your...caliber managed to achieve that?”
Unbelievable.
Despite all of my reasonings, he was still keen on believing that I was the one causing all the commotion. Since he’s an adult, you’d think he would look past all of the racism for rejects like me. But apparently not.
The door suddenly swings open, and in came Alexa with her head casting to the ground while being accompanied by Atticus. Upon seeing the future leader of the pack, Greyson immediately sits up straight. “Atticus, what brings you here? I was just in the middle of talking to Miss Lunaris to get the whole truth.”
The expression on Atticus’s face darkens as he glances at Greyson. “Yeah. I heard your conversation. And at this point, I am starting to question why my father hired an incompetent guy like you.”
I gape at him as well as the others who are present in the room. I couldn’t believe that he had said those words to the principal. Next alpha or not, I don’t think that he should be calling the principal incompetent.
Heavy air began to settle in the room, and it was starting to get uncomfortable.
Mr. Greyson was stunned that his lips moved like a choking fish before he managed to form words again. “I-I beg your pardon?” He stutters.
The look on Atticus’s face hasn’t changed. His gaze was cold as he leered at Greyson. “I heard your conversation. Even though she continued telling you that she never provoked your niece, you were so determined to keep her record clean that you harassed an innocent student into admitting a mistake she never made.” Atticus clicks his tongue and glances at him. “Fucking pathetic. While you were busy, I interrogated your niece instead, and guess what? She already admitted that she attacked her classmate.” He glances at Alexa and gesturs for her to move forward.
Alexa fumbles with her hands before moving forward until she stands before her uncle, Mr. Greyson. “I-I’m sorry. It was all me.” She says. Her body was shaking in fear. It was the first time that I had ever seen a proud girl so shaken up.
I was rooted to my seat as I watched the exchange. I have heard about how Atticus deals with misbehaving members of the pack, but I thought that he would just be dealing with students and not the school staff.
I didn’t even know what to do about this situation, so I sat quietly and watched the exchange.
“Now that it is settled, you should release her and write a report about your niece, don’t you think?” He says while pointing in my direction before he continues, “And before I forgot. I’m going to report this to the Alpha. If I were you, I better start packing.”
I guess that was the last straw for Mr. Greyson because he slams his hands on the table hard enough that it broke the glass covering the wooden surface. “You’ve got to be joking,” Greyson says through gritted teeth. Greyson drew his brows together in a deep frown. “The person that you’re protecting isn’t even a werewolf! Protecting someone who won’t be relevant in the future is absurd. You’re not even the Alpha yet, and you’re already getting cocky. As the future alpha, you should be protecting your pack!” Greyson’s eyes had morphed into the color of his wolf as he glared at Atticus.
Atticus, on the other hand, simply glowered at the man as he carefully made his approach. “Yes, I am protecting my pack. And since Lunaris here was born into this pack, it still makes her an official member whether she can morph or not. And as long as she is a member, she will be treated like any other member of the pack.” I flinch the moment that he turns to me while tilting his head to the side. “Come on. You’re no longer in trouble since you’re the victim.”
It took me a while to figure out that he was waiting for me to get and follow him out. When he saw me casting a worried glance at the enraged principal, he surprised me by calling for my attention. “You don’t have to worry about him. Get up and let’s go.”
I hastily gather up my belongings before I follow Atticus to the door. He pries it open for me and waits until I pass through before exiting himself. Once the door closed, I turn my body to face him without looking at him.
“T-Thank you,” I fumble with my words.
It wasn’t the first time that I spoke with this guy. And from my impression of him last night compared to the man I saw earlier, he seemed very different. The man in front of me appears regal than the one I met as a wolf.
“Don’t worry about it.” He cast me a short glance along with a tiny smile on his lips. “I’m sorry about the way the others are treating you. It isn’t fair.”
I avert my gaze and simply nod my head. Even if he did help me, I should still keep my distance from him.
Something catches the corner of my gaze, and I see that he is rubbing his bare arms unconsciously. It was the exact spot that I dug my nails into to get a better grip on him before he fell onto the cliff.
I start to feel uncomfortable. “I should get going.” I begin to walk away, trying to put as much distance between him and I.
“Lunaris. That’s your name, right?” I pause in my tracks and nod my head without turning. “If anything like this happens again, do not hesitate to come and ask me for help, okay?”
Again, I nod without looking back. And when it seems like he didn’t have anything to say anymore, I resume my retreat. As I did, numerous thoughts ran into my head.
Why, after all these years, is he trying to be helpful all of a sudden? If he really was true to his words about pack equality, he should have done something long ago. I have been an outcast for years now, and if he thinks he can just play hero just now? What a joke.
When I was sure that I was out of earshot, I scoffed. No matter what he does, he’s still a wolf. I am sure that deep down, he might have a motive for all of his actions.
“The lottery?!” My mom beams and gets up from her seat so abruptly that she startles both me and Atticus. She must have noticed just from our reaction because she began to smile sheepishly at us. “Would you kids mind it if I leave for a few...hours and wait by the stage? I’ve got tickets.” When she showed him the number of tickets in her purse, Atticus’s eyes widened in surprise. I can’t tell if he was impressed or horrified at my mother’s amount gambled for a mere lottery.I turn to Atticus. “Have your friends arrived?” It was my way to recover from the awkwardness of the situation.“Y-Yeah. They have.” Atticus turns to me blinkingly as if trying to refocus his attention on me instead of the insane amount of tickets that my mother has. “Apparently, they’re by the stage as well. May I walk with the two of you there?”“No worries.” My mom tells him while coming to my side. “Lunaris can keep you company.”“No, I don't.” My response comes immediately and without hesitation. My mother sm
Atticus points to the direction in front of him where I see my mother waiting at the side of one of the booths selling different colored juices. So that’s where she was!We begin to head towards her just in time as the vendor is handing out juice to everyone besides my mother. “Lady, please. Just pick whatever flavor that you like already.” The vendor sounds like he is pleading with her at this point.“I can’t decide between pineapple, peach, and strawberry.” My mother says while rubbing her chin in concentration."Shit," I murmur, slapping my palm across my face. Even while purchasing a simple drink, my mother overthinks everything.Wonderboy Atticus must have sensed my worry because he intervened right away and urged me along with him. I don’t know what compelled me to come along with him, but I suddenly find my legs moving on their own.“Do you mind if I buy one of every flavor of drink that you’re selling?” I felt my eyes widening at his request. Even the shopkeeper is baffled wh
The plaza was buzzing with people. Lights lined the area, and there were hundreds of booths on either side of the street. Sizzling of hot oils cooking various arrays of meat wafted in the air. My mom and I walk side by side as we admire and smell all the amazing scents of spices used in foods. The aroma wafts into my nostrils and immediately makes my mouth water. Everything smells so good that I find myself salivating.“Lunaris, can you lower your hood down?” My mother looks at me with a disapproving look in her eyes. “You look more like a burglar than a customer.”I pull my hood closer to my frame. “It’s a chilly night, mom. I’m cold.” I tell her, even though it is completely a lie. I just don’t want anyone from school to see me. After all, it was the night of the lunar eclipse. Tons of people are gathered here. “Where should we eat?” I ask in an attempt to change the subject.Thankfully, it worked, as my mom seemed to become preoccupied with her thoughts. She pressed a finger to h
I feel like my legs will fall off with all of the running that I have been forced to do after school for training. My schedule for the past few weeks has changed drastically ever since I became part of the team for the school race competition. And it won’t even be coming until the next three months! “Again,” Coach ordered. “You girls aren’t going to stop running until we learn the limits to your stamina. And it’s also for the reason that I may be able to arrange the sequence for the team.” After that, he began to blow on the whistle loudly. The other three girls around me were as worn out as I was. But they can still run very fast, considering their almost burnt-up energy. I guess that they really want to be the ace runner if they are competing for that badly.Come to think of it, why was I being competitive anyway and joining in on the competition as the ace runner? I don’t have any plans to lead the troupe. Hell, I would rather be the first and be over with it at the start. I love
When Atticus mentioned the ring, I carefully studied the one I brought home with me the other night. There was no doubt about it that it was Atticus’s ring.I meticulously washed it since I remember my panther playing with it using her tongue. I can’t leave any of my scents on it when I am going to return it. And I am going to because now that I found its owner, there’s no way to keep this ring.As soon as I finished cleaning it and ensuring no lingering scent of my panther is still there, I placed it in a ziplock bag before heading to school. Now, I only need to find out where Atticus’s locker is so I can slip the ring inside. But with my current situation, I don’t think that I would be able to sneak the ring to his locker without getting spotted. It was hard enough to enter the school premises without the students leering at me and whispering about yesterday’s incident. I would just have to sneak away during classes to deliver the ring without getting spotted.“Lunaris!” Everyone se
I look around the forest, trying to decipher Atticus’s words. I got confused for a brief moment and began looking around to see if I really had strayed from the path that I was following. I haven’t. I was sure of it.“Um,” I hesitated and try wracking my brain to look for words that won’t sound so rude. “I don’t think so?” My voice cracks. “I recognize these parts because I usually take this detour on the way home.” Atticus seems more confuse. “What?” His brows furrow further into confusion, and he begins to sniff the air to confirm his location. Then his eyes starts to roam around as if he were studying the surroundings. “How can this be? I was sure that I was in our yard earlier. I must have run farther than I thought,” he says before his attention returns to me. “Aren’t you supposed to be in school?”It was still school hours at this time, so I want to ask him about the same thing. But instead of responding to his question, I point to my right, hoping that I can change the topic.
