“Someone else was found dead this morning.” Kendrick heard someone whisper as he walked out of his home the following morning. Somehow, he slept through the night again even though he had planned to join the patrol unit last night.
Hearing their words, his heart sank.
Another pack member had lost their life while the Alpha refused to investigate the cause of the one behind the killing.
Following the scents of the blood and the people going and coming, he soon arrived at a familiar building and the closer he walked the more agitated he became.
‘Oh please, goddess, no!’ he prayed as his steps became faster and more hurried.
As he arrived at the destination, he breathed a sigh of relief as he noticed Helen sitting in the living room. However, his relief turned to worry as he noticed the blank look on her face.
“What happened?” he asked, to no one in particular. Not that he couldn’t tell what happened but he needed to hear it.
He needed confirmation that what his nose was telling him wasn’t true.
The blood scent was too strong. Too familiar.
“She’s gone,” someone whispered, and Kendrick turned sharply to face the speaker. The man looked away, unable to keep eye contact with him.
Kendrick’s throat tightened. “Who’s gone?”
“Helen’s mum,” came the broken reply.
Kendrick felt like the ground beneath him shifted. His eyes snapped back to Helen, who sat motionless on the couch. Her hands were clasped tightly together in her lap, her shoulders slumped, her eyes unfocused.
“She... she saw it happen,” a voice said quietly behind him.
He didn’t turn this time. He couldn’t. All he could do was stare at her—his student, his responsibility, his friend and possibly his future mate.
“Helen?” he called softly.
No response.
He stepped closer, slowly kneeling before her.
“Helen, it’s me. It’s Kendrick.”
Her lips moved. Barely. It was a whisper carried on the breath of pain.
“I locked her out… it's my fault she died.”
“No, Helen,” he muttered. Even though he didn't know the full story, he knew her too well to know she wouldn't hurt her mother... Or anyone else.
“I did,” she repeated, her voice choked up. “It came for me and I... I…”
“You were scared. You didn’t mean to.”
“She told me she loved me,” Helen said, her voice cracking like dry twigs underfoot. Her eyes flicked to him. “And then she screamed.”
Kendrick bowed his head, swallowing the lump in his throat. He gently reached for her hand. She didn’t pull away, but she didn’t respond either.
“Did you see what the killer looked like?” Kendrick asked and she remained silent.
“She didn't remember,” Nancy, the pack doctor replied with a sad smile. “We've questioned her about it but she couldn't remember what they looked like.”
“We should give her some time,” Kendrick replied.
“Well, I think now is the right time to know. Now when everything is still fresh in her memory,” Another warrior replied.
“Well, there is nothing we can do if she doesn't remember.” Nancy breathed out.
“I should have joined the patrol,” Kendrick muttered under his breath, angry at himself. “Has the Alpha visited?"
No one answered.
“Where is the Alpha?” he barked this time, his voice rising, sharper than before.
A young she-wolf glanced up, fear in her expression. “Still sleeping, I think. He hasn’t come out yet.”
Kendrick cursed under his breath but said nothing as he looked around the people gathered.
“Everyone, leave. Give her space. I’ll take care of her.”
Slowly, the others filtered out, murmuring and whispering. Some gave Helen sorrowful glances. Others looked away, ashamed. Once they were alone, Kendrick walked back to her.
“I’m going to stay with you, okay?” he said gently, grabbing a blanket and placing it over her shoulders. “You’re not alone, Helen.”
For the first time since he walked in, she blinked. Slowly. Her lips parted.
“The wolf…” she said, barely audible. “There's something familiar about it. I can't remember what it looks like but I swear It looks familiar."
“Familiar? Like someone from our pack?” Kendrick asked in surprise.
“I don't know.” She confessed as tears fell down her eyes. “I want to find the person. I can't allow my mother to die in vain.”
“I know,” Kendrick muttered, his hand clenched beside him. “We will find them and I promise they won't go unpunished.”
While they were in an uproar about the consecutive death, Kendrick stayed with Helen until she fell asleep, after which he left her in the care of Gina, a pack nurse.
“Let me know when she wakes up,” he instructed as he walked out the door.
Once he was out of hearing distance, he punched the closest tree, leaving a bold fist print on the trees as the leaves fell. He let out a growl, finally letting his emotions show.
‘How much longer!’ he thought to himself. ‘How much longer do I have to watch these people die without me being able to do anything?’
‘Without my father doing anything to stop it?’
“Are you okay?” A gentle female voice interrupted his thoughts; as he turned back to see who it was, he noticed it was the girl from the training the previous day.
Taking a deep breath, he let out a dry chuckle.
“As okay as I can be when I wake up to the news of dead pack members almost every day,” he replied, and she pursed her lips, not knowing how to reply to him.
Seeing her silence, Kendrick let out a sigh before gesturing to her with his chin.
“Are you okay?”
“Oh you mean the training from yesterday?” She asked and he nodded. “I'm fine. She'll heal in no time.”
“She didn't mean it,” Kendrick muttered. “She's not always like that.”
“I know. You don't have to tell me.”
“So what's your name again?”
“I'm Kayla, and you are beta Kendrick, right?” She asked in return and he nodded.
They both remained silent as they turned to look in the direction of Helen's home.
And while he was lost in thought he heard her mutter.
“If the Alpha is irresponsible, you can be the responsible one.”
“You don't need the Alpha to give you a go-ahead before you keep your people safe.”
"Is he being serious? Why is he so stupid? Can't he see the signs?!!" A grey-haired woman exclaimed as she watched Kendrick walking away from the car with the rest of the group through a glass orb. "I've heard spiritually insensitive humans never heard of a stubborn and ignorant werewolf. How can he not see the blatant sign in front of him?" Another woman dressed in a grey cloak replied while mixing a potion at the side of the dark, thatched house. "What do we do? Do we leave him to continue the journey?" "We can't," the first lady replied with a frown. "He can't enter the blue mountain... Not yet." "And you know we can't do anything to him... We can only warn him from afar or mess with the car... We are not allowed to mess with people, or else the restraints will be activated." "I'm not sure why you are so concerned about him," the last woman, who had been sitting alone in the middle of the room, knitting, replied without looking up at the other two. "At the end of the day, he's
"There's someone between those trees... Are you trying to play with me?" Kendrick asked as Caspian insisted on not seeing anyone where he was looking. "I should ask you that, ah!" Caspian replied as he glared at Kendrick's serious face. "You said there's someone there, but there's nothing – just trees and bushes. Are you okay? Or are you stressed to the extent of seeing things?" Kendrick ignored him as he realised he was indeed unable to see the woman pointing at him. He narrowed his eyes, pursed his lips, and dug his hands into his pants as he stared back at the figure between the trees. The two maintained a staring contest without saying anything. Seeing that Kendrick was no longer paying attention to him, Caspian followed his line of sight but still couldn't see anyone. With a shrug of his shoulder, he turned back to join the rest of his team while leaving Kendrick alone. "What do you need?" Kendrick finally asked the figure, seeing how she made no attempt to leave. "Do you ha
"Considering my father's incompetence, one would think the elders would want him dead the most." "Well. Maybe?" Elder Lydia replied. "But we can't afford his death before he chooses his heir. He needs to see his heir before he does... To avoid problems." "As you know, the heir doesn't automatically go to the first son when he has more than one, and although the duel is important, his signature is also important." "The elders already held a meeting about this, I heard?" "You heard right, which is why we can't have him die before it is put into action," she explained. "The journey to the blue mountain takes three days and two nights if we go through the South route and back another three. Approximately seven days." "We can shorten that if you don't go with us," Caspian pointed out, and Lydia sighed. "I have to. I need to. And I really won't slow you down." "Well, it's decided; we leave in an hour. Go pack whatever is necessary – food, water and we will set out," Kendrick said, and
"We met again." Kayla chuckled as she ran into the frantic Kendrick walking out of the hospital. "We always seem to meet in odd places.""Are you okay?" She asked as she noticed Kendrick's dishevelled appearance. "You look... exhausted.""I am," Kendrick breathed out. "Are you here for your sister? She hasn't healed?""Oh, she has healed... The doctor kind of picked up an interest in her. You know...her being unable to shift and all?" She chuckled. "He wanted to find the cause for it and why it was delayed... He said he's always been interested, and since we have nothing to lose, we agreed. I'm here for moral and emotional support," she explained with a smile, and Kendrick nodded. She stepped closer to him and held his hand while maintaining her smile. "You should take a rest... There will always be problems as long as we're living, and even though we can live longer than humans... We can also die under stress."Kendrick felt the tension in his shoulders ease as he looked into her eye
"What happened to him?!" Kendrick asked as Collon and the rest of the people who went with Alpha Elton rushed back into the Pack and directly to the Pack clinic with a bleeding Alpha Elton."He's wounded and bleeding, obviously," Collon replied."I can see that! I mean, why isn't he healing? What happened in the duel?""They cheated," Collon breathed out, his fist clenching tightly, but his eyes refused to meet Kendrick's as he stared at the wall before looking around the long clinic hallway. "Alpha Jones used wolfsbane on his claws.""That's a piece of...""Language, young man," Elder Ambrose warned. "It was our fault for thinking they would play fair. We should have checked all the boxes, seeing how their Pack has always been hostile towards ours.""I'm sure if you went with us, you would have checked, Beta Kendrick," Tobi, a warrior, added under his breath. "You were always that careful."The room fell silent as Collon glared at Tobi, his jaw tightening. Kendrick, however, didn’t t
The drive to the duelling location took about half an hour. Soon, the group arrived at a clearing surrounded by mountains and trees. As Alpha Elton got down from the car, he quickly noticed the Alpha of the Brown Fur Pack, Alpha Jones, standing at the forefront of his Pack members, looking smug with a smirk stretched across his face."Still as slow as ever, Elton," Jones called out, arms crossed and chest puffed.Ignoring his comment, Alpha Elton shrugged off his suit and handed it to Collon before walking up to Alpha Jones and the rest of the Brown Fur Pack with an expressionless face. "Well, the weaker one always has to do the waiting," he replied, his voice void of any emotion. "I hope you have gone through the return letter we sent?""Well, we have, and considering we will win this duel, I have nothing to worry about." Alpha Jones scoffed, "I'm just hoping you are not too stingy with the lands you'll give." "Hmm..." Alpha Elton scanned the crowd gathered and nodded. "Having blin
