Chapter 17: Uneasy Alliance

The power that had surged through Mira suddenly ebbed like a retreating tide, leaving her swaying on her feet. She had felt this energy before—that night with Lucian when something had awakened within her—but never like this, never so raw and uncontrolled. The clearing spun around her, faces blurring together as exhaustion crashed over her like a physical blow. She had pushed too hard, let her emotions drive the power beyond what her pregnant body could handle.

"I can't—" she gasped, then darkness claimed her.

"Mira!" Lucian's voice cut through the sudden chaos as she collapsed.

He lunged forward, catching her before she could hit the ground, his arms cradling her unconscious form against his chest. Through their bond, he felt the echo of her exhaustion, the way the uncontrolled power surge had drained her completely.

"What happened to her?" Rowan demanded, rushing to their side, his protective instincts overriding everything else.

"She lost control," Lucian said, his voice tight with concern. "The power—she doesn't even know what it is, let alone how to control it. And with the pregnancy..."

"What power?" Rowan demanded, his silver eyes sharp with confusion and concern. "What are you talking about?"

Around them, both packs stirred uneasily, the strange atmosphere from moments before now replaced by urgent concern. Several wolves pressed closer, but Lucian's protective growl kept them at bay.

"The Luna blood awakened when we bonded," Lucian said tersely, his arms tightening protectively around Mira's unconscious form. "She's my true mate, but she has no training in controlling the power. Raw Luna magic without guidance—it's dangerous for her and the baby."

"She's been having episodes like this?" Elena asked, appearing at Rowan's shoulder with worry etched on her features.

"Not episodes like this," Rowan said slowly, pieces falling into place. "But I've noticed... moments when the air seems to change around her, when her emotions run high. I thought it was just..."

He trailed off, understanding dawning on his face.

The declaration hung in the air between them, a clear statement of claim that made Rowan's jaw tighten but also explained the intensity of Lucian's protective response.

"We need to get her inside," Rowan said, pushing aside his personal feelings in the face of Mira's need. "Now."

For a moment, the two Alphas locked eyes over Mira's unconscious form, years of pack rivalry and personal conflict warring with their shared concern for her wellbeing. Then Rowan nodded toward his cabin.

"This way. Elena has the most experience with difficult pregnancies."

They moved quickly through the camp, both packs parting before them. Elena led the way to Rowan's private dwelling, a comfortable cabin tucked among the pines. Inside, Lucian laid Mira gently on the bed, his hands reluctant to leave her.

"Her pulse is strong," Elena said, checking Mira's vital signs. "But her body is exhausted. The power drain combined with pregnancy..." She looked up at both Alphas. "She needs rest, but more than that, she needs to learn control before this happens again."

"Luna blood," Rowan said quietly, as if testing the words. "I've heard the old stories, but to see it..."

"The way every wolf in the clearing responded to her," Lucian said grimly. "That display of power will be felt for miles. The other Alphas who are already hunting for her will know exactly where to find her now."

Rowan's expression darkened with understanding. "Other Alphas are already hunting her?"

"Three packs, maybe more," Lucian confirmed. "Word of a rogue Luna spread quickly. They'll come for her. A pregnant Luna with awakened power—"

"Is the ultimate prize," Lucian finished. "Political strength, magical authority, the ability to unite territories under one rule."

A soft moan interrupted them. Mira's eyes fluttered open, confusion clouding her features as she tried to focus on the faces around her.

"What happened?" she whispered, her voice hoarse.

"You overextended yourself," Lucian said gently, moving to sit beside the bed. "The power you used—it drained you completely."

"Power?" Mira struggled to sit up, both Alphas moving to help her. Their hands briefly touched as they steadied her, the contact awkward but necessary. "You mean what happened in the clearing? The way everyone just... stopped?"

"That was Luna magic," Rowan said carefully. "Ancient bloodline power that awakened in you."

The revelation hit her like a physical blow. "That's impossible. Luna bloodlines are royal—they don't just abandon their children at pack borders."

"Unless they were trying to protect you," Lucian said gently. "Luna families often hid their daughters from those who would exploit their power. What you experienced today, what we all felt—that was your birthright."

Mira stared between them, processing this information. "And now every time I get emotional, this happens?"

"Until you learn control," Elena said from where she was preparing herbs. "The pregnancy makes it worse—your body is already under stress, and strong emotions can trigger the power involuntarily."

"We need to prepare," Lucian said, rising from the bed. "Defenses, allies, training for Mira—"

"We?" Rowan's eyebrow rose, though his tone was less hostile than before.

"She's my mate," Lucian said firmly. "My true mate, carrying my child. That makes her safety my responsibility, regardless of whatever exists between you and me."

Rowan studied him for a long moment, seeing something in Lucian's expression that made him reassess the situation. This wasn't just possessive instinct—this was genuine love and desperate concern.

"Then we work together," Rowan said slowly. "For her sake, and for the child's."

It wasn't friendship, wasn't even a true truce. But it was a beginning—two Alphas united by their shared need to protect the woman who had changed everything.

Outside, the first shadows of evening were falling, and with them came the scent of distant wolves on the wind. Mira's display of power would pinpoint her location for those already searching, drawing them like moths to flame.

The hunters were closing in, and neither Alpha was prepared for what was coming.

The Blackpine territory fell silent in the wake of Mira's demonstration, the only sounds the retreating footsteps of defeated enemies and the whispered awe of wolves who had just witnessed true Luna power. As the silver light faded from around her, Mira swayed slightly, the effort of commanding so many Alphas taking its toll.Lucian was there instantly, his arms steady and sure around her. "Easy," he murmured. "I've got you.""Luna." The voice was aged but strong, filled with reverence and something that might have been relief.Mira looked up to see the Alpha Elder approaching, his weathered face transformed by a mixture of awe and joy. Behind him came the Blackpine council members, their expressions ranging from wonder to cautious hope."Alpha Elder," she said, inclining her head respectfully. Despite everything that had happened, this was Lucian's father, the leader of what would soon be her pack."My Luna," he said, dropping to one knee before her. The gesture sent a ripple through

The sight that greeted them as they descended toward Blackpine territory was worse than any of them had imagined. What remained of the coalition forces had surrounded the settlement, but their "protection" looked more like a stranglehold. Armed wolves patrolled the perimeter in organized formations, while banners displaying the crests of multiple packs flew from hastily erected command posts."It's a war camp," Rowan said grimly, his silver eyes scanning the enemy positions. "They're not here for a tribunal. They're here for conquest."Lucian's hands clenched into fists as he spotted the Blackpine wolves gathered in the center of their own territory, clearly under guard rather than protection. "My father... the elders... they're prisoners in their own home."Mira closed her eyes, extending her Luna senses toward the settlement below. What she felt made her blood burn with rage—fear, confusion, and the bitter taste of betrayal from wolves who had expected justice and found political th

Within an hour, the Silverpine camp had transformed into organized chaos. Wolves packed essential supplies while others prepared weapons and armor. The air hummed with urgent energy as two packs prepared to march to war together.Mira stood at the edge of the clearing, her hand resting protectively on her belly as she watched the preparations. The pregnancy was still early, but she could feel the life growing within her."You don't have to come," Rowan said quietly, approaching with a travel pack. "My wolves can escort you to safety while Lucian and I handle this.""And go where?" Mira asked. "There is no safety for me anymore. Not as long as other Alphas see me as a prize to be won." She shook her head. "My place is with my pack, defending my home.""Blackpine isn't your home yet," Rowan pointed out gently."It will be." Mira's voice carried certainty. "Whatever Kane revealed about my birth, I can feel the pull of the land, the call of the wolves who need their Luna. That's my home n

The Moonridge envoys arrived with the morning mist, led by a woman whose resemblance to Selene was unmistakable—the same dark hair and sharp features, but with calculating coldness her daughter had never possessed."Lady Vera," Rowan said formally. "Welcome to Silverpine territory.""Alpha Rowan." Lady Vera's gaze settled on Mira. "And the infamous Luna. You've caused quite a stir across the territories."Mira stepped forward with newly awakened authority, Kane's defeat still humming in her veins. "Your message spoke of urgent intelligence regarding threats to my safety.""Indeed." Lady Vera's smile was sharp as a blade. "My daughter's unfortunate entanglement with Alpha Lucian has left our family seeking new alliances.""You mean salvaging your political standing after your daughter was publicly rejected," Lucian said bluntly.Lady Vera's expression didn't change. "We come with an offer of alliance. The Ravenwood Pack is rallying Kane's scattered allies. They claim the Luna's display

Kane's presence at the edge of Silverpine territory had everyone on edge. The forest held its breath as the two sides faced each other across the clearing."I'm not going anywhere," Mira said clearly. "I've made my choice. I'm returning to Blackpine with Lucian."Kane's smile widened, predatory and cold. "Your choice? You were never meant to have a choice, girl. You belong to me. You always have.""She belongs to no one," Lucian stepped forward, voice deadly quiet.Kane's expression shifted, becoming almost amused. "How touching. The prodigal son, playing hero for his pregnant little mate." His smile turned cruel. "Tell me, Lucian—does your father still keep secrets from you?"Lucian's jaw tightened. "What are you talking about?""Your precious Luna. Your father knew exactly where she came from when his elders found her at your borders. He knew whose blanket she was wrapped in, whose crest it bore." His gaze shifted to Mira, predatory and possessive. "He knew she was already promised

The sun had barely risen over Blackpine territory when the Alpha Elder felt it—a surge of power that rippled through the forest like thunder, making his cabin windows rattle. He shot upright, eyes wide with recognition. His second-in-command burst in, face pale. "Alpha, did you feel—""The bond," the Alpha Elder said, satisfaction and concern crossing his features. "Lucian has finally done what he should have done weeks ago. The Luna power is fully awakened now." His expression grew serious. "And every pack within a hundred miles will have felt it too.""What are your orders?"The Alpha Elder's jaw tightened. "Double our border patrols immediately. That power surge will draw every ambitious Alpha in the region." His eyes hardened with protective fury. "She's carrying my grandchild. Any pack that wants to claim what belongs to Blackpine will have to go through us first."Miles away in Silverpine territory, Mira stirred in Lucian's arms as sunlight filtered through their shelter.
