Chapter 2

New management could be a massive change depending on how much they wanted to change. I had some questions floating in my head, but they were all asked or answered in one way, shape or form by others. The meeting lasted just over an hour by the time all the questions had been answered. At the end of the question answering, the people who walked in behind the MD were introduced. They were a team of managers from the Yorkshire site who were not at risk and would help lead the Leicester team here once it was built.

The meeting was concluded and people dissipated from the room and back to their desks. The afternoon was filled with a lot of office chatter between everyone regarding possibilities. We knew with the redundancies happening that it would be a good few months before things really started happening.

"You know what I think, I think we should go out tomorrow night." Cleo exclaimed.

"Really Cleo? Any particular reason?" I questioned.

"To celebrate the fact that we could be getting rid of most, if not all, of the crap management here."

I couldn't help but laugh. "It'll be months before that and there's no guarantee the new managers will be any better."

"Any excuse for a night out" Cleo laughed.

"Fine but it can't be a late one, I've got lunch plans with my mum on Saturday."

"Just a few drinks," Cleo smiled.

I knew Cleo too well. A few drinks were never just a few drinks when Cleo was out. Friday at work flew by. Cleo had a change of clothes and decided to come to mine after work as it was closer to getting into town for the pub she wanted to go to. She had already pre-booked a taxi for 7pm. It wasn't going to leave long to get ready after work, but we had to make do with the time we had.

Cleo jumped in the shower first while I pulled her make-up and hair accessories out of her bag for her. I had just finished placing them all out on my dressing table when she appeared, ushering me into the shower. I rolled my eyes at her on my way out of the bedroom. I let the hot water hit my skin. It raised goosebumps momentarily until my body adjusted. I was enjoying the rush of the water over me too much as I was taking too long for Cleo.

"Hurry up!" She shouted.

With a sigh, I dragged myself out of the shower. As soon as I stepped back into my bedroom my jaw dropped. Cleo had rifles through all my drawers leaving my room a mess. There were a couple of options of clothes on the bed for me.

"What the hell, Cleo!" I exclaimed seeing the destruction.

"I needed to find something for you to wear." She smiled innocently.

"And I couldn't have done that myself, or you couldn't have done it with destroying my room?" There was a hint of annoyance of my voice.

"I'm sorry," she's pouted. "If you let me down your hair and make-up quickly I'll have time left to clear it all up." She smiled innocently.

"Ah, leave it. I needed to clear it out anyway. I guess I'll just add it to my to-do list this weekend." I laughed.

Cleo sat me down and whizzed through my hair and makeup. I thought she was going a bit over the top to say we were only supposed to be having a few drinks. My hair was normally pin straight; Cleo had added waves throughout. Make up normally I wear nothing or a very light layer, so little so people wouldn't normally notice that I was wearing it. Now I have full concealer, foundation, blusher, bronzer, full silver and black eyes. The full works.

"Gorgeous," she smiled happily stepping back and admiring her work.

"This seems like a lot of effort for a few drinks," I jibed.

"Get dressed," she ordered.

I unlocked my PC, sent the files over to Cleo and Prue, and got out of there. As I was putting my bag over my shoulder, I saw Damian in the doorway watching me carefully. I couldn’t quite understand why he had chosen me for this or what the moment was between us. Either way I knew it couldn’t happen again. I just needed to get started on Project Orion; I needed something to focus on. The following morning as I arrived, Cleo was at her desk but there was no sign of Prue. “Hey, where’s Prue?” I asked. Cleo scooted her chair closer. “She’s been with Mr. Ice since she got here. She didn’t even get her coat off before he called her in. He didn’t sound happy either.” “Ouch, so he’s in a fantastic mood today. This is going to be fun. Do you know what he called her in for?” “No idea.” Cleo responded. She wheeled back over to her side as I logged on. We heard the door open and instinctively looked over our shoulders to see Prue walking out the office. She didn’t look happy. I was about

“Argh!” I growled as I threw myself back into my seat at my desk. “What happened?” Cleo asked. “He’s infuriating!” I snapped. Cleo laughed, “I’ve never seen anyone get under your skin like this before.” “Did he tell you why he pulled you from the account?” Prue asked. “No, only he has plans for me. Wouldn’t say anything else other than that.” I grunted. “What the hell am I supposed to do now?” I opened my emails and worked through outstanding queries. I sent over everything I had to Prue and Cleo. I also made the call to Dan to explain that Prue and Cleo would be the front facing contacts on the account. I was there if he needed it but was required on another project. Dan, as expected, was alright with it all. He knew that I was only a phone call away should he need me. “Are you coming?” Prue asked as they finished up to head home. “I’ve got a few notes to pull together to send you for the meeting tomorrow. I’ll head home after that.” “Don’t stay too long.” Cleo said. I

Cleo was riled up enough for all three of us. I ate my lunch in silence at my desk. It was almost 4pm when Damian’s voice rose through his closed door. It was unclear what he was saying, but it was clear something had him riled up. “ERIN!” He shouted my name as he swung the door open. “Shit,” I jumped. I looked over and his face was pure anger. “Surely, he’s not calling me for my one to one now?” I asked Prue. She shrugged her shoulders at me, uncertainty on her face. I looked back at Cleo, who looked sorry for me. “ERIN!” He shouted again, “I won’t ask again.” He snapped. I quickly rose to my feet and headed over to the office. All eyes were on me as I walked over. “Close the door.” His voice stern as I stepped in. I closed the door, ensuring it closed fully and was not ajar at all. I took a seat opposite his desk. I felt like I had been called into the headteachers' office and was in trouble. He looked at his screen, seemingly reading some information before picking u

I was a bundle of nerves on Monday morning. This was going to be the start of a massive few weeks. The drive to work was quiet, so quiet that I ended up 30 minutes early. As I entered the office, there were only a couple of other people there. The back-office light was also on, which meant Damian was already in as well. “Good morning, Erin.” Damian’s voice was low as he walked past me. I wasn’t aware he was there; his words made me jump. My heart pounded and I stumbled. He reached out a hand to catch me. That was the first time we touched each other. His touch was soft, gentle, and almost caring. “My apologies, I didn’t mean to make you jump.” He spoke. I paused; a mix of emotions ran through me. I wasn’t sure what to say. Our eyes were fixed on each other and I fell like I was frozen. I had to break away. “Er, thank you. Good morning.” I fumbled with my words. A small smile flashed across his face as he withdrew his hand and walked to his office. People filtered into the o

Cleo and Prue arrived at mine around 7pm. I was just finishing putting my boots on when they knocked at the door. Cleo opened the door and let them in. I walked into the front room just as there was a car beeping outside. “That’ll be the taxi.” Prue said. I grabbed my phone and placed it in my purse. With that, we were off and out of the door. The taxi dropped us off at Flares bar. I rolled my eyes as I didn’t want a big night out, but Flares meant a big night out. Especially now Cleo had Prue encouraging her as well. I headed to the bar and ordered the first round of drinks. “I’m glad it’s Friday,” I laughed as I handed the drinks to the girls. “Oh, come on, we won’t get too drunk.” Cleo laughed. “Either way, drunk or not, this is a celebration. To Erin, who had landed the biggest job Written Ink has ever seen.” Prue raised her glass. “To Erin.” Cleo echoed. I blushed; I hated praise. But on this occasion, I knew I deserved it. I had spent months working with Dan on pos

“Hi Dan, how are you?” “I’m not too bad, thank you. What about yourself?” “I’m good, thank you for asking. I’m guessing you are calling to discuss the proposal on the new print job?” “Yes, I have looked over the samples you have kindly sent me. I have also consulted with my team. The samples were beautiful, and we really did like the roll fold side into the voucher holder inside. It gives us plenty of room for all the text options we have.” Dan paused. My gut twisted and I felt like there was something he was holding back. “I feel like there is a but coming here somewhere, Dan.” I was filled with nerves. “No, but. We would like to proceed and we would like to run with it.” “Are you serious?” My voice high pitched slightly. “However,” Dan paused. My stomach sank again, “I knew there was something.” “We would like to book 1 million copies.” My heart sank; I had just landed one of the biggest jobs we have had in years, and now they wanted to increase the print run.
