"Erin, thank goodness you answered. I need your help please." Here we go again, I thought as I rolled my eyes. "How can I help?" I answered politely. "I don't know what I've done but my excel has lost all its formulas. I can't get them to work when I put them back in." The employee panicked. I asked them to give me 10 minutes and I would go and have a look. "Oracle to the rescue again?" Cleo laughed. "Honestly whoever came up with the nickname, needs sacking!" I joked back. Don't get me wrong I loved my job as a team leader in account management at Written Ink printing. The only downside is that I have been here longer than almost everyone in the office which means I know everything there is to know. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on how you want to look at it, I'm also a computer whizz. I know near enough every formula going to get us through anything we need. I hate blowing my own trumpet and I hate being the center of attention. But when you're known as 'the oracle', it means I have enough people blowing my trumpet for me anyway. I headed off to one of the other offices to leand a hand. As I came back from my next Cleo had a strange look on her face. "There's a big town hall meeting in 20 mins," she's explained "Oh." We have all been waiting for this moment. With the change of the world these days, most people are moving to digital and the print industry is starting to struggle. We knew this day was coming but what we didn't know was what was going to happen. Everyone in office was quietly waiting. Cleo and I stood together and everyone in the office followed our lead. As we entered the big meeting room, we saw a few chairs left, so we quickly grabbed them before anyone else did. With only standing room left, everyone squashed in around the back of the room and tables that had been moved out of the way. Our MD entered with a group of new faces behind. The meeting started a few moments later. "As you may all be aware, with the increase in digital print, the physical print industry is taking a hit. You will have seen a downturn in work running through the business and that is across the whole of the country. I am here to squash all rumours. The factory is not closing. I won't lie we have some work ahead of us but if we all stick together and work towards the plan we will not only stay open but we will be more profitable than we have been in a very long time." There were murmurs through the room as figures were put up on the board. He talked through the figures and the future plans. It was all standard expected things. They were going to put more people into the sales team and get out there and push the best packages we offer. They were going to get better processes into the working environment on the floor and follow that up with daily and weekly checks. The next part we were told shocked us all. "Within the plan there will also be a shake up in management. We are going to merge our site with the Written Ink Printing site based in Yorkshire. With this it means both sites will help each other. If you don't have capacity then the first port of call is Yorkshire. If they have the same issue their contact firstly will be you. We will all work as one united front. With the plan the total profit aim should be easily achieved. The shake up does mean there will be redundancies here on site at a higher level along with brining in managers into brand new roles to push our new goals." There were gasps around the room as questions broke out left, right, and center. It has been almost 8 weeks since our manager left. Prue was on the Monday morning drink run. As she entered with the office drinks, there was a look on her face that was one of excitement. Once the drinks had been dished out, she rolled her chair between mine and Cleo’s.“Guess what.” She tried to keep her voice quiet. We both looked at her, waiting for her to continue.“I heard the cleaners talking in reception when I came in. Apparently, the new boss is here.”“Did you see them?” I asked.“Nope, but they were talking about how hot and young he is.” She tried to contain her excitement, but her slightly high-pitched voice caught the attention of a couple of others in the office. They soon came over or around from their tables, and we were all having an office talk over the morning drinks. As things settled down, Prue jumped on a morning update call with the clients, one by one. It was something new that I had introduced to ensure everyone was getting the level of service they req
Prue followed me out into the office as I headed over to Cleo. “Cleo, this is Prue she will be joining our team. IT are yet to organise her accounts and access so could she shadow you while I organise the data for the next job?”“Of course, come and make yourself comfortable.” Cleo advised Prue.“Did Dan say anything about the data files?” I asked.“He’s working on them and was nearly done so there’s a chance you have them in the transfer folder already.” “Perfect. Prue, what experience do you already have?”“Honestly, in an actual office setting like this, not much. However, I have completed my business admin level 3 apprenticeship. Anything you can teach me will be greatly appreciated. I am keen to learn and get stuck in.”I like her enthusiasm, and the plus side was at least she had done some kind of course so had someknowledge about business. She settled right in with Cleo; they were an easy pairing. By lunch time, it felt like Prue had always been there. She brought a fresh
There was a wave of shock in the room. Questions started flying left, right, and center. Our boss wasn’t the worst we’ve had. He had room for improvement as he was quite laid back that he wouldn’t bring people to task with their mistakes. That made it difficult to improve processes when we needed to. As we left, I could see Cleo talking but not what she was saying. There were a million things running around in my head. The day was a slow one. By the time our shift was complete, Cleo was asking if I wanted to go for a drink after work. I agreed, in need of a distraction from my own thoughts. I was mainly worried about the person that would be coming in and taking the place of our boss. Cleo was happy to do most of the talking for the evening. The following week followed a similar pattern; the office had a strange air of caution in it. I was as upbeat as normal, which helped lift the mood of the office. On Friday, I decided to treat the office and headed into the local bakery and grab
Cleo dragged me inside and gave me her phone. I studied it carefully and it was a text message from Jack. He was one of the two guys from the night before who brought us drinks. The message was asking Cleo out on a date the following evening.“That’s great!” I exclaimed. “But why do you seem so flustered?”Cleo took her phone back and changed the message. This time there was a text message from Sam, also asking her out on a date.“Oh, so both guys want to take you out on a date, on the same night.”“Yes!” She exclaimed. “What do I do?”“Do you think they each know the other has asked you?”“Probably, they were joking towards the end of last night about letting the best man win so it wouldn’t surprise me.”“So, go out with both of them.” I replied nonchalantly.“Erin!” Cleo exclaimed.“Cleo!” I wasn’t sure why she exclaimed my name to me, so I parroted the move.“That is not something you would normally suggest.” Cleo was shocked.“Cleo, you are single. Neither have asked for your hand
