OLIVIA
Look how quickly time passed and how some of what I set out to do I failed to accomplish. I tried to stop Emily’s wedding, but I couldn’t. There was nothing I could have done to warn her about anything. Things would have escalated for the worse and if Kevin found out about our plans, the chances of catching him would have evaporated.
Whether it suited me, today I had to watch my sister marry the most dreaded gangster and I couldn’t do anything about it. It gave me a toast to the most dangerous people in society. I was dreaming of a time when they were all caught and locked up, but I certainly still had a long way to go before I got to see my dream come true. It was hard enough seeing Emily surrounded by so many dangerous people without me being able to protect her. It was the hardest day of my career.
After such a tense day, the only thing I wanted was to curl up in my comfy bed and get my thoughts in order. And look how instead of planning my next steps, my thoughts were flying back in time to my home, to my father.
I had many achievements in life, but catching the most feared criminal would have been the most important of my entire professional history.
Becoming a chief agent was an honor, but I couldn’t afford to languish behind a desk full of charts and just stick to organizing people. That wasn’t what I wanted out of life. Of course I couldn’t give up my job now. Fortunately, my father worked at the same agency as me. He was an excellent professional, drastic and fair, but also a veteran of the agency. I took advantage of all that and made him my deputy chief agent. God, I could remember it like it was yesterday. The conversation I had with my dad and his reactions that I had never seen before. They were absolutely heartbreaking.
“Olivia, but you know very well that I signed the retirement papers. I’m of pensionable age,” he told me, trying to pull back. Luckily, my colleagues were running away from their responsibilities and jumped to my aid.
“Mr. Andy Brown, Olivia is right. No one better than you will be able to take over this job. We’ll talk it over higher up and ask their permission to stick around for a while until the waters calm down.”
“You boys don’t realize that I need quiet and rest, too. I’ve been working all these years. Besides, I never enjoyed leading. It’s been an honor to be your colleague and especially my daughter’s, but giving you orders I don’t like at all.”
“Agent Brown, let me set you straight on a few things. In our agency, we are all like family and like any family, we need a leader. “
“Well, we already have a leader. You’re a very good and competent chief captain.”
“Dad, I didn’t have time to tell you they stationed me at the agency in England for a while. Chief Agent Frank needs someone competent to go undercover and follow Kevin Parker.”
“Kevin Parker? That dangerous interloper? The most feared outlaw?”
“Yes! That’s him!”
“I don’t think so. How are you going to get close to him? Olivia is very dangerous. I know our job is perilous, but right now it’s way too unsafe.” Dad’s voice was strained. It was the first time he’d ever really been afraid. I’d never seen him like this in all the time I’d known him. To him, his job was sacred, and he valued it more than his life. He never cared about danger.
“You know when you went on that dangerous mission to Austria to catch that mafia clan? Remember what you said to me when I said I feared for your life? My life is worthless if dangerous people are running loose in the world.”
I looked into his eyes carefully, carefully, trying to read his thoughts, but I couldn’t. He was so good at it. I could never read his face.
“It’s hard for me to give an answer now!”
“Dad, Kevin is Emily’s boyfriend! I have to protect my sister from him. They’re getting married!” The reaction he got still gives me chills to this day. He clenched his hand into a fist and punched the table so hard we all flinched. His teeth were so clenched I could hear them grinding. “I’m going to be heading up a publishing house as editor-in-chief and I’m going to entice Emily to join me by publishing the novels she writes, which are wonderful anyway. She’s an exceptional talent. She’s a really talented writer. From there, we’ll see how things go, but I need your help.”
“Promise me you’ll take care of yourself and her!” That was all he could say before his eyes flooded with tears.
“I take it I’m counting on you?”
He nodded affirmatively, then hugged me warmer than ever. It was the most emotional thing I’ve ever experienced, but also the most wonderful. To know that someone loves you unconditionally was a divine thing.
Frank’s unexpected visit chased away the homesickness that had been nagging me ever since I returned from the wedding. Now I had to admit that it was a very pleasant visit for me. When I was around him, we had some mixed feelings and, frankly, I think he felt the same way I did.
“How was today?”
“Honestly, it was harder than I imagined. Witnessing my sister’s unhappiness is so hard. Having the most feared gangsters under your nose and not being able to arrest them....”
“Olivia, there was nothing you could do. We don’t have enough evidence to prove his actions yet. If you’re with her, it’s the best thing.”
“I wish I had at least told her she was my sister.”
Frank walked over to me, clasped my right hand in his and said in a warm voice.
“You realize that she could have pushed you away from her and then you would have lost touch with Kevin too, but also lost the chance to make great friends with her. The best thing is to be there for her and support her when she’s having a hard time. You need to be prepared to defend her because it won’t be long before she shows up crying at your door. Protect and support her. You’ll have to pick her up from the bottom and show her she can always count on you.”
“You’re right! Thanks for always cheering me up.”
“No need to thank me. You’ve come to my rescue on my most difficult mission, so I have you to thank. By the way, what did you find out about Mike, his brother?”
“Nothing to compromise him. He’s just another one of Kevin’s victims. He’s so trusting. I feel so sorry for him. His only fault is that he has the same father as Kevin. I’ll always stand by him. He needs support.”
“Of course, you do well to stay by his side. He’ll need a friend like you. And later, who knows?..”
“If you’re insinuating that maybe I’ll fall in love with him, I’ll think someone has short-circuited your mind. Really! How can you think of such a thing? You believe I have time for love now that we’re in the middle of the most important mission of our careers?” I said with a downcast look. “And besides, how do you know I don’t already love someone else?” I continued in my thoughts.
I knew I loved this man, but I wasn’t ready to admit it. It wasn’t because I was afraid of love, or maybe it was because of the past that haunted me relentlessly. But also because I wasn’t sure of his feelings for me, and a romance would have drawn us away from our business, something we couldn’t afford at the time. It was no longer our personal lives that mattered, but the lives of those innocents who were suffering at the hands of heartless evildoers who believed that everything could be bought and sold. Those people who believed that even love could be bought and sold at will. Although my heart ached, I could not love at those times.
The ringing of the phone quickly took me out of the tense situation I had entered. I sensed that something was wrong with Frank, but I was not in the mood to have an argumentative discussion with him.
“Emily!?” I asked, surprised that he was calling me on the wedding night.
“Kevin... Susan... pregnancy....m hurts Olivia!”
I couldn’t understand anything, but I could tell what it was all about. What I couldn’t understand was the pregnancy thing.
I looked at Frank, who quickly figured out what it meant. He helped me find out where she was. I reached her in a heartbeat. She was in a terrible state. I hugged her and vowed that I wouldn’t rest until Kevin was behind bars. I would make him pay for every tear Emily shed.
EMILYAnother boring day followed, with my mother giving me her endless lectures. She supposedly had my best interests at heart, but when I needed her, she was always at work. Even when I had my first book out, she ignored me and said I was better off working at the firm with my sister. After all this time, she was happy and proud of me and my success, but that was not because she finally thought I had made it in life, but because they praised her in society not only for her success but also for my achievements.Ever since I found the two of them in bed on my wedding night, I felt like my life was over. My mother just sat there with her words on me, whining worse than me, saying I was ruining her reputation at work, as if I felt fine that as soon as I said “I do” I found out I married a jerk. She kept telling me I should just close my eyes and get on with my marriage. I wasn’t surprised. My mother always cared about what people said and not about us, her children. Since my father's d
EMILYI didn’t exchange a word on the road with Olivia. I just sat here, losing myself in painful thoughts. That shocking scene came back to my mind again and again, like a broken record. But I woke up from my reverie when we stopped in front of my sister’s house. She was waiting for me with little Eduard who, as soon as he saw me, jumped into my arms. The smile and the warmth that this little angel, whom I love sincerely, gave me, relieved a little of the anxiety I felt when I saw they had deceived me. I had to admit that I missed him very much, so I quickly let go of my anger and enjoyed that sweet little boy. Although he was only a year old, he knew me very well and loved me very much. I spent a lot of time with him from the moment he was born until I shut myself off from everyone because of Kevin. As I gazed warmly at him and kissed his plump, fluffy cheeks, my little prince, he handed me an envelope. I took it looking in wonder at Olivia, my sister Gaby and my mother who was sl
EMILY“Excuse me! Are you all right?” he asked me.I answered nothing to that crazy man who ran through such crowded places without paying attention. I glared at him and refused the hand he held out to help me up. Just wanted to sink into the ground in shame and slap him for embarrassing me. Everyone looked at me like an actor playing a role. Only it was an uncomfortable role for me and funny for them. My underwear got scattered everywhere, like it was on display.I stood up and instead of getting angrier and angrier, his athletic body and glowing face caught my attention. His blue eyes looked at me so intently, sending a shiver down my spine. He was a tall man with hair like the color of gold. Through his tight white shirt, I could see his well-defined chest and powerful arms. He looked at me more closely and asked, worried.“Emily Smith?”“Yes,” I replied. He studied me from head to toe for a few seconds, then stopped his gaze at my generous cleavage. I could have sworn he knew me f
EMILY I looked around and saw that I was alone. Just me and the beautiful nature. I got convinced the driver who brought me here had left. A swim in the sea was what I needed. I stripped off my clothes and plunged naked into the sea, that comforted me with its foaming waves. I loved swimming naked. On all the holidays I spent with Kevin in the beginning, we only went to deserted beaches where we swam naked. We were having fun and just loving each other. Or at least that’s what I wanted to believe, that we loved each other. After a while Susan started coming with us and the fun wasn’t the same. Now, after a long time, I swam and let go of all the craziness and suffering I had been through. I swam and felt the venom I had built up in my soul being taken by the waves of the sea and carried far out into the open blue. I felt that this was the place where I could rise from the ashes and build a future just for me as I dreamed it and could finally do whatever I wanted without
EMILYI turned my attention to the glass door that led directly out onto the terrace of the house. I quickly grabbed something on and ran to inspect the outside of the house as well. As I stepped out onto a huge patio, I realized it had a sofa and two bamboo armchairs, a bar stocked with all kinds of drinks I’d never seen before. On the left side of the terrace was a huge, lighted swimming pool, a few sun chairs, and canopies. At the front, if you went down a few steps, you would go straight to the beach. The right side took me out onto a green lawn that embraced the pathway leading from the house to the exit, then stretched merrily for dozens of yards. Colorful flowers spilled from every planter, set on ornaments that were more and more exquisite. In the middle of the lawn was a hot tub surrounded by bushy trees.I felt like I was in a fairy tale of princes and princesses. It was like I had escaped the harsh reality and found myself in a paradise full of flowers and joy.I was tire
MIKEOh, my goodness! What did I do wrong? I’d been working with her for a year, the very person I hated so much. She seemed like a madwoman. She was the typical woman with money who had the world at her feet and thought even she could buy life. I refused to think about what my father’s hard-earned fortune was being spent on. Yet when I first saw her, for a second, I felt as if the world beyond had merged with our world and she held me in her arms again and kissed me with that mad passion that only she had. God, how I missed her caresses, her tenderness and gentleness. She was so pure, fragile on the surface, but stronger than anyone could have imagined. After all these years, I still missed her purity and kindness. How was it possible that she was so much like her? I was sure she was that woman. When I was in a coma, my brother called her name. I couldn’t explain how I could hear everything that was being said around me, but I could hear the doctors saying that they didn’t give me
MIKE“I know nothing about what you’re saying. Yesterday morning I was in my house, in my living room, and in the evening I was here. Olivia packed my bag. I personally don’t even know what’s in it.”“Well, you need nothing. Everything you need is here. She had me furnish the house with everything you need. I even hired a fashion designer to make you a bunch of fancy outfits. But you’ve also got regular, casual clothes. You find everything you need in the dressing room.” “And who paid for all this?”“POOF! I don’t know, honestly. You know what sponsor you have!” I found myself speaking out loud, but in my mind I already knew who I meant. “Kevin, from Dad’s work, of course!”“Don’t be a jerk! You know nothing about me to dare insinuate such things!” she yelled at me. I honestly should have restrained myself, but I couldn’t. It was eating me up to think that my brother was making a mockery of our father’s work, but in the end, he left him at the helm of the firm.Filled with nerves she
EMILYAfter Mike left, I retired to my office to see the new piece of equipment Olivia had gifted me with. It was a brand new laptop. A brand recognized as the best. I’ve been wanting a computer like that for a long time. I could write my novels with it, but I could also set up my covers, my advertising materials. Any new novel needed a bit of promotion. A brief story about the subject of the book, set up spectacularly, attracted thousands of readers. I loved doing everything on my own and not depending on others. At first, I was working with a graphic designer, but we never got along. Either I didn’t know how to explain or he found it hard to understand the feelings my work was supposed to express. I sat down at the computer with a mad desire to write. When I saw myself in front of it, alone, my mind froze, giving place to a great emptiness, as if someone had come in and wiped out all the ideas I’d had a moment before. I sat hoping that I had still got out at least a few ideas th
