Jordan's POV

When Talia Smith said that, she made it sound as though she was commenting on the weather.

Talia and her foster brother, Matthew Reed, had a son named James Reed.

I tugged at the corner of my lips and forced a smile. "It's not April Fools' Day. Why would you joke about something like this?"

At that moment, I genuinely wished she was merely pulling my leg.

However, right in front of me, Talia called James. "Jordan accidentally touched it earlier. Don't worry. I promised to take you to Glacieland, so I will. I'll never break my promises."

The tender look in her eyes, the look of a mother, seemed so unreal to me.

After hanging up, she showed me the guest list for the honeymoon trip—Talia, Matthew, and James.

"To be honest, it's been exhausting, keeping this a secret from you for five years. It's probably better that you know now."

The very next second, she held out legal family registration. "We're legally registered as a family."

The sheer volume of information hit me like a sledgehammer. For a moment, my mind went blank. "You're… a family?"

From the end of my internship at her company to the mundane routines of our life together, I had spent five years by her side, only to discover I wasn't even her legal husband.

Talia nodded nonchalantly. "I had too much to drink at our engagement party and mistook Matthew for you, so I was pregnant with his baby. I had to do right by him, so I registered our marriage. I just wanted to give the child a complete family."

Hadn't the child she was pregnant with back then died shortly after birth? Before my brain could catch up, she walked up to me. "Don't worry, though. You're the one I consider my husband, and besides, we've always lived as husband and wife."

In other words, when I was being beaten black and blue at a business dinner, she was with them.

When my car skidded and crashed into the highway guardrail, she had been with them, too.

Even the honeymoon I'd waited five agonizing years for had been repeatedly postponed because of them.

I clutched the plane tickets in the palm of my hand and smiled. "Did you know? This was the last chance I was ever going to give you to go on a trip with m—"

Before I could finish, her phone rang. The caller ID "Honey" felt like a wad of cotton shoved down my throat.

Talia walked out as she answered the call. Her voice was gentler than ever.

The affectionate voices spilling from the speakerphone pierced my ears like countless tiny needles. I couldn't help but clench my fists as a loud ringing filled my head.

Jordan's POVI never thought the day would come when she'd use our son as a means to keep me bound to her. However, she had no idea that my feelings for James were nothing more than the instinctive love a father felt for his own flesh and blood. So long as he grew up safe and sound, I had no desire to raise him by my side. Hence, I jeered. "Since he has called Matthew 'Daddy' for five years, I doubt he'll be able to bond with me. You should know perfectly well what kind of father Matthew would be. "Besides, James is staying with you, his mother. I'm sure you wouldn't torture him, so you can raise him yourself from now on." After hearing that, she couldn't help but scowl. "Jordan, are you seriously willing to abandon even your own son just to leave me? I refuse to believe you can be this heartless!" "You're the one who's heartless!" I instinctively blurted out.Back then, she'd given James to Matthew, married him, and watched my own son and me be separated. For the last fi

Jordan's POVThe moment the plane took off, all the resentment and anger I had bottled up vanished into thin air. Not every goodbye needed to be spoken, and not every ending had to be marked by a bitter argument. After getting off the plane, I turned on my phone, and a flood of Talia's messages and missed calls rushed in. Even when she learned that I'd lost the ability to ever have children again, she still didn't apologize to me. At that moment, I was even more grateful that I'd chosen to leave a woman who had only ever cared about herself. I followed the honeymoon itinerary I'd planned ages ago and traveled to various countries on my own. After drinking in all kinds of breathtaking scenery, I realized that I could travel just fine without Talia. …Three months later, I decided to settle down in Lumeria for the time being. It was where I'd attended college and spent the happiest years of my youth. On the day I paid the deposit for my rental apartment, the property manager

Third-person POVTalia hurried downstairs. The sight that greeted her nearly made her legs give out. Blood had leaked out and pooled inside the insulated box, revealing what looked like two bloody lumps of flesh. "W-What's this doing in my house?" The housekeeper hurriedly backed away. "I was going to unbox it, Ms. Smith… I had no idea it contained this! Wasn't this sent by Mr. Brooks?" Exactly. Why on earth would Jordan send this to her? Talia had only asked the doctors to perform a vasectomy on him; she never imagined they would remove his balls. When Jordan had screamed and begged her for mercy, she hadn't believed him. She hadn't even wanted to hear another word from him. After pulling the surveillance footage, she watched the horrific ordeal unfold before her eyes. It turned out those people had subjected Jordan to such brutal torture. Talia's mind went blank, and she could barely think straight. "This can't be… I have to find him right away!" She had just taken

Third-person POVTalia couldn't help but frown. "This can't be right. My boyfriend lives here. If he had something to give me, he'd give it to me directly. Why would he send it by courier?" Still, she signed the courier's receipt.Talia was about to unbox it when Matthew hurriedly snatched it from her and tossed it aside. "Jordan must be up to his usual tricks again! He always gives me scary things to freak me out. He used to do this all the time. I simply didn't tell you…"She took in his reaction and felt a surge of disgust toward Jordan. "To think I was kind enough to agree to go on a honeymoon with him! I had no idea he already saw you as a thorn in his side. I can't believe he'd stoop to such childish pranks." With that thought in mind, she pulled James into her arms. "Let me know if Jordan ever tries to harm you again. I'll stand up for you."However, she didn't notice that James kept staring at Matthew with fear in his eyes. "I-I will."Matthew deliberately changed the su

Jordan's POVI went rigid. Before I knew it, a sharp slap landed square on my face. Talia held up her trembling hand, her brows knitted together. "How dare you lay a hand on them right in front of me? Who knows how you've been threatening them behind my back?"The metallic tang of blood rapidly spread through my mouth. The pain of seeing James hurt, the guests' insults, and the hatred in Talia's eyes suffocated me. Matthew, who was standing behind her, looked at me with a provocative grin. He mouthed the words, "How does it feel to be betrayed by both your son and your wife?" His contorted features magnified infinitely before my eyes. I could no longer hold back and charged at him. Before I could even reach him, Talia ruthlessly kicked me down the steps. In a heartbeat, excruciating pain shot through my internal organs as shards of broken glass plunged into my skin. All I could hear was Talia's furious roar. "That's enough, Jordan!"I didn't dare move. I practically begged

Jordan's POVI felt as though I'd been struck by lightning. The child she had put her life on the line to bear for me had actually been gifted to Matthew right from the cradle. And I, his father, hadn't even gotten the chance to see him. I could still remember how Talia had bawled her eyes out while doing her best to comfort me. "We'll have another child. I know we will."I'd spent three days and three nights weeping at my child's grave. My hair had turned gray overnight. Little did I know, at the exact same time, my son had been sleeping peacefully in another man's arms. …The following day, Talia had someone drag me to Matthew's birthday party against my will. The man was dressed in a sleek suit, holding my biological child with one hand while wrapping his other arm around the slender waist of my girlfriend. I, on the other hand, looked out of place.Murmurs rippled through the guests behind me. "Rumor has it he's infertile. It's all thanks to Matthew that the Smith fam
