Chapter 3

Author: Hedgehog Peach
The next day, I moved into my perfume studio.

When Herbert asked me why, I told him that I was very busy and had to rush on orders.

I was actually very busy at that moment. My mentor, Fiona Jenson, had invited me to take part in a competition, and I was busier than a bee as I worked hard on my entry.

As for my relationship with Herbert, I just didn't have the mental capacity to deal with it yet.

On the final day of the competition, an unknown number called me. It was Michelle, and she requested that we meet up at a cafe.

She sat across from me, exuding the same amount of charm, grace, and elegance I'd felt from Herbert.

Smiling, she then spoke the iciest words possible. "Ms. Summers, if you know what's best for you, you should voluntarily give up what doesn't belong to you before I forcibly pry it away from your hands."

She behaved as if she were already the head of the Fischer family.

However, I refused to back down. I replied with a question of my own. "Even if it doesn't belong to me, who's to say that it belongs to you either?"

Michelle simply sipped on her coffee unhurriedly.

"You lost your parents at a young age and grew up in an orphanage. You were adopted when you turned ten, but your adoptive father was a drunkard. So, what made you think that you even deserved the title of 'Mrs. Fischer'?"

That was a part of my childhood that I never wanted to revisit. Yet, she'd brought it up so abruptly that my mind just blanked out at that moment.

"You've been investigating me!" I exclaimed in shock, accidentally spilling my coffee when my sleeve caught against the rim of the cup.

Michelle merely looked at me with a calm expression and handed me a few paper napkins. As her hand moved about, I caught a whiff of "Forever Love" from her.

As she stood up to leave, she left me with the words, "If you still refuse to acknowledge it, feel free to drop by Riverside Restaurant tomorrow to see it for yourself. We'll be waiting in private room 301."

I hadn't slept well for days, yet I dragged my exhausted body to the private dining room, only to see Michelle gently blowing on something hot in her spoon before feeding it to Herbert.

Herbert simply opened his mouth to accept the food without resistance.

One of his friends jokingly said, "Herb's usually a clean freak, but he's only tolerant when it comes to Chelle."

I immediately thought about that one time Herbert had gotten sick with a fever of 104 degrees and burrowed himself under the covers, looking as pale as a ghost.

I had made him some chicken noodle soup and tried feeding him, but he pushed my hands away. Then, in an extremely nasal voice, he told me, "I'll feed myself."

Back then, I thought that he was just stubbornly independent and didn't want to be a bother to me. Now, I finally realized that he had just thought I was dirty.

I pushed open the door to the private dining room and walked in. I didn't care that showing up like this, uninvited, was a rude thing to do.

I started interrogating Herbert. If he loved Michelle so much, then why had he agreed to be my boyfriend back then and lead me on like this?

My heart had run stone cold. I smiled bitterly as I asked him, "Did you enjoy toying with my feelings for such a long time? Letting me think that you were serious about us? Was it fun?"

Michelle's sharp nails dug into my arm as she pried me off Herbert.

She yelled, "Who gave you the right to speak to Herbie like that? I'm the one he loves. You're just a tapeworm that came out of nowhere. You don't even deserve to be my opponent!"

"You've got no right to meddle in our relationship! And stop it with that holier-than-thou attitude of yours!"

I'd only managed to fire that line back at her before she threw the hot stew all over me.

Michelle then grinned smugly while Herbert just frowned at me. He coldly asked, "Have you finally woken up now, Lyanna Summers?"

At that, I heard my heart break into a million glass pieces.

Michelle bumped right into me. I did her a favor and told her, "He's at the back."Her eyes were slightly reddened, probably because she hadn't slept much lately. She mumbled quietly, "Herbert's condition isn't looking good. The doctor said that… there's a possibility of stomach cancer."I nodded in understanding, but I genuinely didn't know how to react to that.It had only been one month, but it was apparently enough time to erase whatever love and affection I'd harbored for Herbert over the years.Michelle spoke again, asking me a question this time. "If you have the time, can you please visit Mandy more often? She really likes you."I agreed without hesitation.Emotionally speaking, she had treated me like her own daughter.Logically speaking, she was also my biggest and most valuable client.…I got back to my studio and prayed devoutly as usual. The young woman at the reception grew curious. She asked me, "Ms. Summers, what did you just pray for? Did you pray for a husb

I'd used up too much energy interacting with Michelle. So, I just lay in bed and slowly drifted off to sleep. There was a commotion at the door, and I woke up again at the noise.I heard a mess of footsteps in the hospital corridor. A while later, the door to my ward was pushed open.Herbert pushed Michelle, who was in his path, away and hurried toward me. He looked like he was in great pain. His face was as pale as a ghost, with cold sweat running down his face. He walked slower than a disabled snail. He looked at me and reached out with his hand. Then, he dropped it. His eyes were completely bloodshot as he continued looking at me."You're finally up, Lyanna."The young nurse told me that I had passed out due to fright and lack of oxygen. I'd then been in a coma for three days and three nights.I turned my head around, not wanting to face him. However, he still thrust the cut bracelet in my face."Lyanna, why don't you want this bracelet? Is it because you don't like the colo

The smell of disinfectant overpowered the cedarwood scent. I woke up when a young nurse was neatly bussing around me.She seemed to sigh in relief before saying, "All's well now that you've woken up."Before I could gather my thoughts, I caught sight of my left wrist and saw a foreign red band around it, next to the hospital wristband tag that marked my identity as their patient. The red band was actually a slim bracelet with a cross pendant.Someone walked in through the door to the ward. I turned to look at the newcomer. It turned out to be Michelle. She looked completely worn out, with dark circles shadowing her eyes. Her fringe was also messy and stuck onto her face in odd spots. The first thing she said was, "You won." She laughed bitterly as unshed tears swirled in her eyes."Did you know? From the moment you left, Herbie's gastritis only worsened. That day when he called you? He was actually lying in a hospital bed in the emergency ward. He refused to let me tell you that

At the prize-giving ceremony, I managed to connect with many internationally-acclaimed perfumers from famous brands around the world. We exchanged knowledge, and I even learned many new things from them. When it was time for the reporters to interview me, a few couldn't help asking me about the incident that had just happened. One of the reporters, who was from the same country as I was, asked, "There's a rumor that your ex-boyfriend inspired your newest fragrance this season. Is that true?"All the cameras were immediately directed at me.I smiled widely and answered, "My new fragrance is called 'Rebel'. The top note is a refreshing scent that reminds you of soap with a whiff of gardenia. And the main inspiration for this scent is none other than myself."Some people may not be born with a silver spoon in their mouths. They may not have a childhood or upbringing they're proud of. They might be mocked, ridiculed, bullied, or dismissed—but people like them often turn out to be the

Michelle's shaky voice then trailed off. She genuinely sounded kind and understanding toward Herbert, concerned about him, even though she was the one being bullied, and had her childhood sweetheart taken from her by that same bully.Yet, she still sounded like she refused to wish her bully any harm, instead wishing him all the best in his relationship with her, as if she were a lovesick fool.Mandy straightened up. Her eyes looked weary and tired."Stop saying that Lyanna asked me for the bracelet. She wouldn't even take it from me, even though I insisted that she did. She even told me that day that she worried other people would grow suspicious of her actual feelings for you."She held her coat around her shoulders and turned so that her back was to us. Then, she said disappointedly, "Herbert, can't you tell whether a woman you're living with has sincere feelings for you? She's done so much for you. Yet, you choose to believe the lie someone else feeds you?"A long while later,

Herbert arrived before the police even got here.It was most probably Michelle who called him over. He arrived visibly worked up, his nostrils flaring. Two buttons on his shirt were undone. As soon as Michelle caught sight of him, she immediately wriggled free from the guards and ran over to him, wrapping her hands around his arm.She then spoke in a soft, helpless voice. "Herbie, you're finally here. They've been hurting me—""What's going on?"Herbert scanned the mess on the floor, the pile of broken glass by the cupboard, and then stared long and hard at my bleeding ankle.Meanwhile, Michelle looked triumphant, as if her cavalry had just arrived. She started telling him tall tales about me."Herbie! Mandy just won't give me the gold bracelet. It must be because of her! It's bad enough that she denied it, but she even laughed in my face about it!"I accidentally broke that glass bottle because I was just too angry at her. I didn't mean for the glass to hurt her. But she then
