Chapter 2

Author: Hedgehog Peach
I had heard from Mandy before that Herbert used to have a childhood friend who grew up with him.

However, every time Mandy brought it up, her eyes would always be filled with disgust.

"Michelle used to be our driver's daughter. She'd been friends with Herbert ever since they were young. But when she was six, her dad got into an accident while out with Herbert's dad.

"She's never had a mother, so I took her into the family because I felt sorry for her. I'd never treated her badly a day in her life."

At that point, Mandy then sighed heavily.

"It's bad enough that she doesn't know how to be grateful about things, but she's also started scheming ever since. She wants to be the next lady of the house and marry into the family, and become the next Mrs. Fischer! Tell me, does she even remember that I exist? She doesn't respect me at all!"

Mandy hadn't wanted Herbert to be influenced by Michelle, so she sent the latter abroad for her studies.

When Herbert learned about it, he made a huge fuss and refused to do anything but get drunk and drown in his sorrows. He also stopped caring about his family's company.

It wasn't until he met me that he finally started changing for the better.

When Mandy gave me the gold bracelet—the Fischers' family heirloom—she patted me on the back and said, "Lyanna, you saved Herbert and helped the Fischers."

I had thought that that was the case, too.

However, about a month ago, Herbert suddenly stood me up one night.

He had always been very courteous and considerate toward me. But that night, we'd agreed to meet for dinner—yet he never showed up.

I waited until the restaurant closed up for the night. Then, I called an Uber to go back home.

I received a very short text message from him on the way back. It read, "Something came up."

I thought that something urgent had come up at his company, so I didn't think of asking him about it any further. I even told him not to rush.

But when I launched Instagram, I tapped on a story one of his friends posted and immediately saw the photo.

All of Herbert's friends were in it, gathered around a young woman at the center.

The young woman was quite pretty and elegant, but she was making a funny face at the camera. Meanwhile, Herbert was seated right next to her, his gaze ever so soft as he stared lovingly at her.

The caption in the story read, "Someone's first love just came home and insisted that we all give her the warmest welcome she deserved."

I turned off my phone, suddenly feeling lightheaded like I wanted to throw up.

I didn't pick a fight with Herbert that night. I even still made sure to warm up some soup to ease his hangover when he finally came home that night.

It was past midnight by the time Herbert stumbled back home. The stench of alcohol was so strong that it masked the cedarwood fragrance on him.

I brought him a bowl of soup. However, he grabbed my wrist, staring at me with confused, hazy eyes before glancing back down at the gold bracelet.

He mumbled, "This is Chelly's… Give it back to her… It's not yours…"

I stared at him as he teetered on the edge of unconsciousness and asked helplessly, "Herbert, who am I?"

He didn't respond.

Suddenly, the living room felt like a vast chamber of nothingness. I felt my eyes stinging as they turned red.

Michelle bumped right into me. I did her a favor and told her, "He's at the back."Her eyes were slightly reddened, probably because she hadn't slept much lately. She mumbled quietly, "Herbert's condition isn't looking good. The doctor said that… there's a possibility of stomach cancer."I nodded in understanding, but I genuinely didn't know how to react to that.It had only been one month, but it was apparently enough time to erase whatever love and affection I'd harbored for Herbert over the years.Michelle spoke again, asking me a question this time. "If you have the time, can you please visit Mandy more often? She really likes you."I agreed without hesitation.Emotionally speaking, she had treated me like her own daughter.Logically speaking, she was also my biggest and most valuable client.…I got back to my studio and prayed devoutly as usual. The young woman at the reception grew curious. She asked me, "Ms. Summers, what did you just pray for? Did you pray for a husb

I'd used up too much energy interacting with Michelle. So, I just lay in bed and slowly drifted off to sleep. There was a commotion at the door, and I woke up again at the noise.I heard a mess of footsteps in the hospital corridor. A while later, the door to my ward was pushed open.Herbert pushed Michelle, who was in his path, away and hurried toward me. He looked like he was in great pain. His face was as pale as a ghost, with cold sweat running down his face. He walked slower than a disabled snail. He looked at me and reached out with his hand. Then, he dropped it. His eyes were completely bloodshot as he continued looking at me."You're finally up, Lyanna."The young nurse told me that I had passed out due to fright and lack of oxygen. I'd then been in a coma for three days and three nights.I turned my head around, not wanting to face him. However, he still thrust the cut bracelet in my face."Lyanna, why don't you want this bracelet? Is it because you don't like the colo

The smell of disinfectant overpowered the cedarwood scent. I woke up when a young nurse was neatly bussing around me.She seemed to sigh in relief before saying, "All's well now that you've woken up."Before I could gather my thoughts, I caught sight of my left wrist and saw a foreign red band around it, next to the hospital wristband tag that marked my identity as their patient. The red band was actually a slim bracelet with a cross pendant.Someone walked in through the door to the ward. I turned to look at the newcomer. It turned out to be Michelle. She looked completely worn out, with dark circles shadowing her eyes. Her fringe was also messy and stuck onto her face in odd spots. The first thing she said was, "You won." She laughed bitterly as unshed tears swirled in her eyes."Did you know? From the moment you left, Herbie's gastritis only worsened. That day when he called you? He was actually lying in a hospital bed in the emergency ward. He refused to let me tell you that

At the prize-giving ceremony, I managed to connect with many internationally-acclaimed perfumers from famous brands around the world. We exchanged knowledge, and I even learned many new things from them. When it was time for the reporters to interview me, a few couldn't help asking me about the incident that had just happened. One of the reporters, who was from the same country as I was, asked, "There's a rumor that your ex-boyfriend inspired your newest fragrance this season. Is that true?"All the cameras were immediately directed at me.I smiled widely and answered, "My new fragrance is called 'Rebel'. The top note is a refreshing scent that reminds you of soap with a whiff of gardenia. And the main inspiration for this scent is none other than myself."Some people may not be born with a silver spoon in their mouths. They may not have a childhood or upbringing they're proud of. They might be mocked, ridiculed, bullied, or dismissed—but people like them often turn out to be the

Michelle's shaky voice then trailed off. She genuinely sounded kind and understanding toward Herbert, concerned about him, even though she was the one being bullied, and had her childhood sweetheart taken from her by that same bully.Yet, she still sounded like she refused to wish her bully any harm, instead wishing him all the best in his relationship with her, as if she were a lovesick fool.Mandy straightened up. Her eyes looked weary and tired."Stop saying that Lyanna asked me for the bracelet. She wouldn't even take it from me, even though I insisted that she did. She even told me that day that she worried other people would grow suspicious of her actual feelings for you."She held her coat around her shoulders and turned so that her back was to us. Then, she said disappointedly, "Herbert, can't you tell whether a woman you're living with has sincere feelings for you? She's done so much for you. Yet, you choose to believe the lie someone else feeds you?"A long while later,

Herbert arrived before the police even got here.It was most probably Michelle who called him over. He arrived visibly worked up, his nostrils flaring. Two buttons on his shirt were undone. As soon as Michelle caught sight of him, she immediately wriggled free from the guards and ran over to him, wrapping her hands around his arm.She then spoke in a soft, helpless voice. "Herbie, you're finally here. They've been hurting me—""What's going on?"Herbert scanned the mess on the floor, the pile of broken glass by the cupboard, and then stared long and hard at my bleeding ankle.Meanwhile, Michelle looked triumphant, as if her cavalry had just arrived. She started telling him tall tales about me."Herbie! Mandy just won't give me the gold bracelet. It must be because of her! It's bad enough that she denied it, but she even laughed in my face about it!"I accidentally broke that glass bottle because I was just too angry at her. I didn't mean for the glass to hurt her. But she then
