Chapter 1

I didn't expect Michelle Watson to throw the pot of seafood stew all over me.

I stayed rooted to the ground. The only thing I could do in time was to close my eyes.

Everything was ruined—the dress I had painstakingly chosen for that day and the makeup I'd applied to my face.

There had been spicy peppers in the stew. The smell choked me, causing my eyes to water up from the sting.

It was deathly quiet in the private dining room. The other people around us were just watching us curiously, ready for more drama.

I stood there, rooted in place, and not a single person came up to me to offer any help.

With tears swirling in my eyes, I immediately turned toward Herbert Fischer. He was sitting by the side with his arms crossed before his chest, a look of dissatisfaction on his face.

"Lyanna Summers. Apologize to Chelly."

I immediately felt wronged as emotions rose within my chest. Tears continued to stream down my face more than ever before.

After such a long time together, this was the very first time I completely lost my cool in front of Herbert. I crumbled as I screamed, "I am your girlfriend, not her! How could you just watch someone else bully me and still demand that I apologize to her?"

Herbert just frowned harder and grabbed a napkin from the table to wipe off the stew that had splashed onto his shirt sleeve.

"If you hadn't called Chelly names just now, she'd never have thrown it at you. Also, Chelly is not just 'someone else'."

Meanwhile, Michelle simply examined her nails and commented nonchalantly, "Herbie, is this the woman Mandy chose for you to marry? She's such a disgrace for screaming and making a scene in public."

The icy look in Herbert's eyes was sharp enough to pierce right through me.

"Lyanna, where have your manners disappeared to?"

I was a huge, dripping mess as I stared at the unfamiliar look in his eyes, like he wanted nothing more to do with me. Then I looked into Michelle's eyes, smug and challenging, and I couldn't stop myself from chuckling bitterly afterward.

I said, "I bet that if Michelle were to hold a knife against my throat one day, I wouldn't be allowed to struggle either, since that would mean I was ill-mannered. Isn't that right?"

Herbert just snorted and chuckled aloud. "You really like overthinking. You were just splashed with hot stew. It's not like you'd die from that."

When the waitress entered with more food and caught sight of me, she couldn't help but ask, "Miss, do you need my help?"

Herbert's friends then finally stepped out, trying to be peacemakers.

"Alright. Lyanna, Herb, let's not argue anymore. Calm down."

"That's right. Lyanna, you know that Herb's always been like this since young. As long as Michelle is involved, he'd fly into a terrible rage."

I looked at the people in the private dining room, including Herbert.

From the start of it all, none of them had even offered me a napkin. My boyfriend wasn't even as concerned about me as the waitress who didn't know me.

I removed the gold bracelet around my wrist and gently set it down on the table.

"Herbert, I'm done being the Fischers' future daughter-in-law."

The waitress, who looked to be in her early 20s, brought me into an empty room next door and handed me a damp towel.

While wiping off the mess on my clothes, I recalled the first time I'd met Herbert.

I had met him because of his mother, Mandy Knight.

The Fischer family was well-known in the city for being old money. They were rich, wealthy, and had plenty of connections everywhere.

Mandy was a huge fan of scents and fragrances. She often hired me to produce one-of-a-kind perfume creations for her at her home.

Once, when I was just leaving her place, Herbert had walked in through the door at the same time, and I had collided with him because I couldn't stop myself in time.

The perfume in my box overturned, spilling all over my shirt and his. I quickly looked up in a panic.

Mandy had heard the noise and came out to look. Her eyes held a playful smile.

"You're such a clumsy oaf, Herbie. Go help Lyanna with a new change of clothes."

Mandy liked me a lot. She'd brought up many times before this that she wanted to introduce her son to me.

I looked at the man before me. He exuded an elegant charm from his head to his toes.

A second later, he suddenly smiled at me and said, "This smells really good. Am I detecting cedarwood notes in it?"

That was a huge plus for me. I felt better about him at once. So, I nodded and said, "If you like it, Mr. Fischer, I'll give you a bottle of it next time."

He answered me gently, "That would be too much to ask for. Why don't I treat you to dinner sometime instead?"

That was how our interaction started. Eventually, we started getting close.

Mandy seemed happy about it. She then continued asking me to come over, under the guise of appreciating her collection of fragrances, but she kept leaving me alone with Herbert on multiple occasions.

On the day we decided to become a couple, I gave Herbert a full bottle of perfume, like I'd promised him before. It was called "Forever Love".

I lowered my head anxiously. My voice was shaky as I explained, "This is the first fragrance I created ever since setting up my perfumery. It's called 'Forever Love', and it's not for sale.

"I've had many people tell me that I should use a stronger floral fragrance or sweeter fruit scent for my perfumes, but I prefer the clean fragrances from woodsy scents more.

"You're the first person to understand me for that. Would you like to be my muse for my next fragrance?"

This was a very private and intimate request from a perfumer, and a straightforward one too.

Herbert simply smiled and took the bottle from me, saying, "That works too." Then, he leaned down and kissed me.

At that moment, the smell of cedar and sandalwood enveloped us. I thought that I'd finally found the person who completed me.

I had never quite understood what he meant when he said, "That works too."

However, a month ago, Michelle finally returned from overseas. And on her, I smelled the familiar fragrance that I'd gifted to Herbert in the past.

Michelle bumped right into me. I did her a favor and told her, "He's at the back."Her eyes were slightly reddened, probably because she hadn't slept much lately. She mumbled quietly, "Herbert's condition isn't looking good. The doctor said that… there's a possibility of stomach cancer."I nodded in understanding, but I genuinely didn't know how to react to that.It had only been one month, but it was apparently enough time to erase whatever love and affection I'd harbored for Herbert over the years.Michelle spoke again, asking me a question this time. "If you have the time, can you please visit Mandy more often? She really likes you."I agreed without hesitation.Emotionally speaking, she had treated me like her own daughter.Logically speaking, she was also my biggest and most valuable client.…I got back to my studio and prayed devoutly as usual. The young woman at the reception grew curious. She asked me, "Ms. Summers, what did you just pray for? Did you pray for a husb

I'd used up too much energy interacting with Michelle. So, I just lay in bed and slowly drifted off to sleep. There was a commotion at the door, and I woke up again at the noise.I heard a mess of footsteps in the hospital corridor. A while later, the door to my ward was pushed open.Herbert pushed Michelle, who was in his path, away and hurried toward me. He looked like he was in great pain. His face was as pale as a ghost, with cold sweat running down his face. He walked slower than a disabled snail. He looked at me and reached out with his hand. Then, he dropped it. His eyes were completely bloodshot as he continued looking at me."You're finally up, Lyanna."The young nurse told me that I had passed out due to fright and lack of oxygen. I'd then been in a coma for three days and three nights.I turned my head around, not wanting to face him. However, he still thrust the cut bracelet in my face."Lyanna, why don't you want this bracelet? Is it because you don't like the colo

The smell of disinfectant overpowered the cedarwood scent. I woke up when a young nurse was neatly bussing around me.She seemed to sigh in relief before saying, "All's well now that you've woken up."Before I could gather my thoughts, I caught sight of my left wrist and saw a foreign red band around it, next to the hospital wristband tag that marked my identity as their patient. The red band was actually a slim bracelet with a cross pendant.Someone walked in through the door to the ward. I turned to look at the newcomer. It turned out to be Michelle. She looked completely worn out, with dark circles shadowing her eyes. Her fringe was also messy and stuck onto her face in odd spots. The first thing she said was, "You won." She laughed bitterly as unshed tears swirled in her eyes."Did you know? From the moment you left, Herbie's gastritis only worsened. That day when he called you? He was actually lying in a hospital bed in the emergency ward. He refused to let me tell you that

At the prize-giving ceremony, I managed to connect with many internationally-acclaimed perfumers from famous brands around the world. We exchanged knowledge, and I even learned many new things from them. When it was time for the reporters to interview me, a few couldn't help asking me about the incident that had just happened. One of the reporters, who was from the same country as I was, asked, "There's a rumor that your ex-boyfriend inspired your newest fragrance this season. Is that true?"All the cameras were immediately directed at me.I smiled widely and answered, "My new fragrance is called 'Rebel'. The top note is a refreshing scent that reminds you of soap with a whiff of gardenia. And the main inspiration for this scent is none other than myself."Some people may not be born with a silver spoon in their mouths. They may not have a childhood or upbringing they're proud of. They might be mocked, ridiculed, bullied, or dismissed—but people like them often turn out to be the

Michelle's shaky voice then trailed off. She genuinely sounded kind and understanding toward Herbert, concerned about him, even though she was the one being bullied, and had her childhood sweetheart taken from her by that same bully.Yet, she still sounded like she refused to wish her bully any harm, instead wishing him all the best in his relationship with her, as if she were a lovesick fool.Mandy straightened up. Her eyes looked weary and tired."Stop saying that Lyanna asked me for the bracelet. She wouldn't even take it from me, even though I insisted that she did. She even told me that day that she worried other people would grow suspicious of her actual feelings for you."She held her coat around her shoulders and turned so that her back was to us. Then, she said disappointedly, "Herbert, can't you tell whether a woman you're living with has sincere feelings for you? She's done so much for you. Yet, you choose to believe the lie someone else feeds you?"A long while later,

Herbert arrived before the police even got here.It was most probably Michelle who called him over. He arrived visibly worked up, his nostrils flaring. Two buttons on his shirt were undone. As soon as Michelle caught sight of him, she immediately wriggled free from the guards and ran over to him, wrapping her hands around his arm.She then spoke in a soft, helpless voice. "Herbie, you're finally here. They've been hurting me—""What's going on?"Herbert scanned the mess on the floor, the pile of broken glass by the cupboard, and then stared long and hard at my bleeding ankle.Meanwhile, Michelle looked triumphant, as if her cavalry had just arrived. She started telling him tall tales about me."Herbie! Mandy just won't give me the gold bracelet. It must be because of her! It's bad enough that she denied it, but she even laughed in my face about it!"I accidentally broke that glass bottle because I was just too angry at her. I didn't mean for the glass to hurt her. But she then
