"Just a few more days sir, I'm begging you!" Elena cried. She was out of options, she did not know where to go and what to do now.
"I have given you enough time, Elena! Pack your things in two days or else!" Her landlord did not wait for another word, he stormed out of the apartment.Elena sunk to the floor, her eyes watery with tears. She was exhausted, she had spent the night at the hospital after her 12-hour shift and she had come home to her quick notice. She did not blame her landlord, Mr. Blain, he had been very kind to her. He had given her extended dates but her bills were piling up and he was losing money; he had no choice. She had tried her best to meet up with the deadline, she had worked too many extra shifts her boss had told her there were no extra shifts left for her to fill. But no matter how many times she worked it was never enough to pay her bills. She had to look into other options, her sister's health was quickly deteriorating and she needed to raise the money to pay for her surgery, so far she had gotten only twenty-five per cent of what was required, and the doctors had already begun the process.Elena looked around her house, one large sofa, a beat-up television, and some pictures holding family memories. The living room was not much, it was just a small space that led to the even smaller kitchen and then the one room she had shared with her sister. How could she not afford a place so small? She stood up, a pounding headache taking its course, but she stood up nevertheless and walked towards the pictures that were hung on the wall, it was the only part of the small space that made it home. The pictures consisted of her late parents smiling at the camera, some of her and her sister from toddlers to adults. The picture she loved the most was the one taken of just her and Emily a few years ago, it was too painful to look at their smiling faces when Emily was battling for life. Elena looked tired in the picture but she was smiling nonetheless, she looked exhausted and relieved at the same time; her little sister Emily was all smiles, she had the biggest grin. From the picture, you could see their similarities, dark hair, brown eyes and similar figures but Elena was much taller while Emily was short and looked a lot younger.Elena looked away from the picture, holding back tears and headed to the kitchen, she had to find something to eat or she could faint any moment from then. She had only taken a bagel more than ten hours ago, and she had been working intensely, but her kitchen was empty. She dug through her purse and found her last ten-dollar bill, after that she would be broke but she had to find something to eat and fast. She made her way out of her apartment, down the creaking stairs and outside to the cold Chicago air and bustling city.It was six in the evening, and the sun was fading into the horizon and creating a beautiful effect on the environment. Normally, Elena would have stopped to acknowledge it, she loved looking at beautiful landscapes but now she had way too much to worry about. As she made her way to the cafe down the street, her mind was working a mile a minute. If she worked some extra shifts and sold her car she would be able to pay her rent by the next day and raise a bit more for the hospital bill. She was still calculating her losses when she entered the cafe.It was a bit cold, the air conditioning was on full blast even if the weather outside was cool. Elena was a regular customer there, she picked up a cup of coffee every day before she went to work but she had never bothered to socialise with anyone."Hey, what can I get you?" The man behind the counter could have been two or three years older than her, she was familiar with his face but she did not know his name."Um," Elena looked up at the menu on display, even if she knew exactly what she wanted to get she knew she could not afford it."Oh uh, your usual? A cappuccino and a puff pastry, right?" The man asked, a familiar smile on his face."Uh, yes… that's what I usually get but I'm a bit short today." Elena shyly pulled out her ten-dollar bill. "Do you have anything under ten?""Don't worry about it, it's on the house. You're a regular." Elena could not have been more grateful, she was slowly spiralling into more debt and saving her last ten dollars meant a lot. "Thank you so much," the man smiled at her and then started making her espresso.Elena took her order when it was ready and left the coffee shop, heading for her house to do more calculations and decide whether or not her car was going to the market. As she started on her path, her mind was elsewhere, a different place entirely, she was not paying attention to anything or anyone around her. The honking of cars, the murmuring of pedestrians, the screaming children, the barking dogs and everything else that contributed to the loud city all faded into the background. She was so deep in her world that she did not notice the car heading in her direction, and she did not hear the honking and screaming of cars and passengers, she only snapped back to reality when the headlights were so close and blinking directly her but it was too late, and she was too in shock to move. She felt her life flash before her eyes as the car came closer, from her happy memories to her sad ones, she thought about her late parents, and then her sister…was this how she was going to go too?Elena opened her eyes slowly, she was scared. She did not feel any pain, was this what death was like? She was blinded by the headlights that were still blinking at her but the car had stopped a few feet away from her. Elena stumbled backwards and blinked several times, trying to understand what was going on. The owner of the car opened the door and walked towards her, "Are you okay?" Elena was still trying to understand her surroundings so she could not fully register his words or what he was saying."Lady, are you okay?" Elena looked up at the man now, her vision was coming back and so was her memory. "I— I am,""You were not paying attention." He deadpanned. Elena walked backwards and tried to get a better look at him. He was so tall, he towered over her, dressed in an expensive-looking suit; his dark hair was messy, his nose pointed, lips pursed, his jawline was one of the best she had ever seen with a smooth stubble coating it and his brown eyes examined her to see if she was ok
Elena walked into her sister's ward in the hospital, her heart was racing and she had been jumpy since. Ever since she took the money from that strange man she was on an all-time high. She paid her landlord all her outstanding rent that day and then paid in full for her sister's bills, she still had enough left over to fix her beat-up car and pay off some part of her remaining debts."Ellie?" Her sister perked up from the bed the moment she stepped in."Emily," Elena always got emotional when she was in that room. It was a different kind of pain seeing her sister strapped to several tubes to keep her organs working.Emily was a shell of her former self, she was easily tired, her smile had weakened a long time ago, her full hair had now become a thing and short, her eyes were dull and she was a lot thinner; seeing her like that always made Elena tear up but she held it in till she was away from Emily."I was not expecting you, don't you get off work by seven?" Even her sick sister was
Sitting directly opposite someone but being alone seemed to become Elena's life for the next few weeks. She had reluctantly gotten into a relationship with Marcus, and it was not because she was a gold digger or anything; even if sometimes she felt like that. It was because Marcus asked, he looked bored when he did.It happened one night, they had just gotten back from another terrible date where they ate in silence, and before he dropped her off he said, "Elena, will you go out with me?" He looked straight ahead like he could not care less about her answer."Like tomorrow?" She asked sheepishly, Elena was trying to avoid coming to terms with what she thought he was asking. She knew for a fact that he had felt the terrible vibe between them, and there was no space for a romantic pursuit but he had asked anyways…could he not see it?"Like date me. Be my girlfriend, officially." Elena could not tell if the fact he was not looking at her was because he was shy or nervous, but he did not
It was a late night. Elena had just finished her last shift and she was too energetic to go home. Marcus was busy with work, and it was way past Emily's visiting hours. Elena decided to just walk around the breezy city since she had no one else to spend the night with.It made her remember her college days before she dropped out. She was studying business administration at a college not too far from where she grew up but she was not exactly concentrated. She remembered being so young and stupid. She would skip classes a lot, get into trouble with authority and go out drinking or smoking on school nights. She was a smart girl, she had always managed to cover up some part of her syllables just enough to get a B in the exam and move on to the next year. Her parents had tried their best to make her some sense of responsibility but they were too far away to monitor her every move. She remembered Emily being so young, always looking up to her big sister that could do no wrong. No matter how
"So when I was a kid, I used to get this same ice cream combination every time and it drove my mom crazy, she always wanted me to try something new," Gavin said, a smile on his face as he recounted his experience to Elena, who just watched him gleefully."Same. My sister is the adventurous type, any time we went out for ice cream it was a new flavour and a new combo, she was always so ready to experiment but—""You just wanted to stick to a safer option, huh?" Gavin asked. Elena smiled and nodded. It was as if he could read her mind. "I know what that feels like. Maybe one day we should try something different," Elena cleared what was left of her ice cream and stared at Gavin."Maybe, I'm willing if you are," Gavin smirked. He reached for a napkin and reached over to clean a smudge off Elena's cheeks to her utmost surprise. She blushed in return."Sorry, sorry. You just looked too cute with ice cream on your cheeks," Elena laughed. "Are you always this flirty?""No, I'm kind of shy a
"I— I'm sorry but I can't." Gavin stopped in his tracks, recalculating his steps. He stepped back and cleared his throat awkwardly. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry. That was way too strong," he scratched the back of his neck, embarrassment engulfing him."I should not have. I think I'll leave." He turned to leave but she stopped him. "It's okay, I enjoyed today." "Me too, but I really should leave." Elena shrugged off his jacket and handed it to him. It was a lot bigger than her so it swallowed her. "Here," Gavin took his jacket and put it on."Thank you for tonight, and the jacket, " Elena said, trying to lighten the mood."I should be thanking you. It's been so long since I felt this normal,"Elena wanted to ask him what he meant but he had already begun walking off. Once more her thoughts drifted to Marcus and he had driven off that night after giving her a bundle of dollars. As she thought of it, her phone rang. It was Marcus. She was so shocked she watched it ring for a few seconds befor
"You have not given me an answer, Elena" Marcus said as he shifted closer to Elena, he tilted her chin up and made her look at him in his eyes."Is this not what you wanted?" Marcus asked, tilting his eyebrow."I—" Elena stuttered. She could not form words anymore. Her anger had died down in her throat and she was too confused to move. Was he going to kiss her? He had to be bluffing."If you're not comfortable enough then," his words sent shivers down her spine, his touch on her chin was the cause of the goosebumps on her skin. Why did he have such an effect on her? Why did she let him?Marcus shifted away without another word. He buckled his seat belt and continued driving, leaving Elena in awe. "Why— why did you do that?""Because you wanted me to? I'm sorry if I invaded your personal space but you complain a lot, and I thought if I gave you what you wanted then you would not complain anymore."Elena gaped at him. "I do not complain a lot."Marcus did not say anything in return he
"Excuse me?" Elena asked. The cafe suddenly felt hotter."You heard me," Isabel said, she maintained a predator look in her eyes but she still looked annoyed."I don't think I understand what you mean." Elena shifted in her seat, she was becoming uncomfortable by the moment and kept glancing towards the restrooms hoping Marcus would come out and end her misery."Why would he date you? You do not look like his type. Are you a model?" Elena shook her head, the intimidating stare Isabel gave her made her squirm in her seat."You are not a model, of course. You do not even look like one. So what is it that attracts him? You are not that beautiful, I mean, just look at your cheeks." Elena's hands instinctively went up to her face."Have you heard of the word diet?""Excuse me?" Elena asked, her cheeks heating up with anger and embarrassment."I'm not trying to be mean or anything it's just that there is nothing physically attractive about you." Isabel stood up, she seemed happy to have acc
