"I have given you enough time, Elena! Pack your things in two days or else!" Her landlord yelled. "Please sir, a week at least, my sister is sick and I'm trying to raise some money for her surgery." She pleaded, tears in her eyes. "I'm sorry, Elena you're three months behind, I'm sorry about your sister but I'm also worried about my business, I'm not running a charity here, and if you didn't have the money three months ago, there's no way you'll have it in a week," he said, "two days," he repeated and left. Elena sunk to the floor, her eyes watery with tears. She was exhausted, she had spent the night at the hospital after her 12-hour shift and she had come home to her quick notice. She did not blame her landlord, Mr. Jackson, he had been very kind to her. He had given her extended dates but her bills were piling up and he was losing money; he had no choice. Elena had tried her best to meet up with the deadline, she had worked too many extra shifts her boss had told her there were no extra shifts left for her to fill. But no matter how many times she worked it was never enough to pay her bills. Her phone rang, spinning her out of her thoughts of self pity, it was the nurse that was in charge of taking care of Emily, her heart skipped a bit. "Is my sister alright?" Was the first thing she asked when she picked up the phone. "Your sister is fine, Elena. But we're going to need you to come down to the hospital," the nurse said, not exactly sounding too positive. "Please just tell me everything I need to know now, is she alright? Do I need to pay for any other thing?" She asked, cutting straight to the point. "Miss Kingston, you have to understand that I—" "Please, please just tell me straight." "She needs the surgery, now more than ever," the nurse told her, her voice heavy. With a deep sigh she continued, "we're trying to do as much damage control as we can but there's just so little we can manage with her case," "I...I understand," "Please try your best miss, I know its a bit tough on you." "Thank you for your concern," she said and sighed, "I'll try my best to make the amount by the end of the week," That was if she wasn't homeless by that time. Now more than ever she needed a miracle, but first she needed something to eat, her stomach had been growling since she got back, she couldn't keep ignoring it. As she made her way to the cafe down the street, her mind was working a mile a minute. If she worked some extra shifts and sold her car she would be able to pay her rent by the next day and raise a bit more for the hospital bill. She was still calculating her losses when she entered the cafe. It was a bit cold, the air conditioning was on full blast even if the weather outside was cool. Elena was a regular customer there, she picked up a cup of coffee every day before she went to work but she had never bothered to socialise with anyone. "Hey, what can I get you?" The man behind the counter could have been two or three years older than her, she was familiar with his face but she did not know his name. "Um," Elena looked up at the menu on display, even if she knew exactly what she wanted to get she knew she could not afford it. "Oh uh, your usual? A cappuccino and a puff pastry, right?" The man asked, a familiar smile on his face. "Uh, yes… that's what I usually get but I'm a bit short today." Elena shyly pulled out her last ten-dollar bill. "Do you have anything under ten?" "Don't worry about it, it's on the house. You're a regular." Elena could not have been more grateful, she was slowly spiralling into more debt and saving her last ten dollars meant a lot. "Thank you so much," the man smiled at her and then started making her espresso. Elena took her order when it was ready and left the coffee shop, heading for her house to do more calculations and decide whether or not her car was going to the market. As she started on her path, her mind was elsewhere, a different place entirely, she was not paying attention to anything or anyone around her. The honking of cars, the murmuring of pedestrians, the screaming children, the barking dogs and everything else that contributed to the loud city all faded into the background. She was so deep in her world that she did not notice the car heading in her direction, and she did not hear the honking and screaming of cars and passengers, she only snapped back to reality when the headlights were so close and blinking directly her but it was too late, and she was too in shock to move. Elena felt her life flash before her eyes as the car came closer, from her happy memories to her sad ones, she thought about her late parents, and then her sister…was this how she was going to go?A few days had passed since the incident, and everyone was a bit stiff. The tension could be cut through with a knife.Benjamin still had a black eye, he wasn't speaking to anyone in the house and took his meals upstairs, to the relief of everyone. Imogen had no idea what was going on; Gavin was still in a tough spot between compromising his integrity and messing up Elena and Marcus's relationship or just dealing with his problems on his own. Marcus had been sleeping on the couch for days. He had spent most of his time in his office planning for the event with Isabel, and when he wasn't planning, he was just in there working or overthinking. Elena had spent the last few nights silently crying and wishing she hadn't come in the first place and that she didn't feel so strongly about someone he didn't want anything to do with her. Isabel, on the other hand, was as happy and chirpy as ever. She always had a smile on her face for the last few days."So today is the big day, how ready are y
Gavin was almost done with what seemed like the worst day ever. The meeting with his lawyers didn't go quite well. There was a lot of money still pending, and they were not happy with this. They gave him his ex-wife's list of demands to meet the compromise he had offered her, and well, it was very demanding. The only thing that made him smile was hearing Pearl talk about Elena. Her voice was still sleepy, but she talked on and on; he couldn't help but feel a little bit of pride, but it was immediately followed up by regret. If he hadn't screwed things up, it would have been him that introduced Elena to the family. After Pearl fell back asleep, he picked up his laptop and tried to do some work, but he couldn't just focus, so he dropped the laptop and went downstairs; that was when he heard Marcus and Benjamin fighting with each other. He rushed into the living room to separate them because if there was one thing their grandfather hated, it was stupid fights in his house. He managed to
Elena was still on the phone with Henry when she saw Marcus walk into the house from the corner of her eye. She assumed he had some work to do inside and couldn't wait around for her to be done with the call, but she wanted him to stay and finish up what he was saying. She may have been wrong, but it seemed like Marcus was about to tell her that he loved her.If he did, that would change a lot of things about their relationship. It would finally be a mature and serious one, and she could tell him how she felt too. So, she quickly wrapped up her conversation with Henry and walked inside in search of Marcus; instead, she found Isabel."Look who it is," Isabel said, a disgusted look on her face as she sized Elena up and down."Good to see you again, Isabel," Elena said, deciding to take the highway and not stoop down to Isabel's level."I wish I could say the same. Somehow, you've managed to manoeuvre your way even deeper into Marcus's life to the point that you make him take you along
Elena's ringtone disrupted the moment and made Marcus stop talking."I'll just silence it," Elena said, reaching into her back pocket to silence her phone."No, no, it's fine you can take it," Marcus said. He didn't trust himself not to tell her exactly how he felt if they were left alone."Are you sure?" Elena asked, a bit uncertain."Yes, I'm sure. It could be important,"Elena nodded and answered the call, "Hello?""Elena," the person on the other line cleared his throat, a bit nervous, "It's Henry." Her supervisor. Elena's face morphed into one of surprise, "Hi, Henry, I'm sorry I don't have your number saved. I thought I told you I was taking the week off. Didn't you see my email? I thought you approved it—""I did. I know you took the week off; I approved it. I was just um, checking in, wondering if you're alright. " Henry said he was sounding a bit more confident."Oh yes, I'm fine, thanks for calling," Elena replied, then mouthed the words "my supervisor" to Marcus, who nodde
She walked upstairs, completely outraged, and pulled the door to their room open. Marcus was seated on the armchair in the corner of the room, working on his laptop, but he closed it when he saw the look on her face."Is something wrong? Did my family do something—" he had already stood up, ready to go fight with whoever had made her upstairs, but she stopped him."How could you give my sister that kind of amount and not tell me?!" Marcus looked at her confused before it dawned on him, "Oh, right, the money. I didn't think it was a big deal; I was just trying to help,""She didn't ask for your help! Neither did Derek," Elena replied."It was a gift; they didn't have to ask," Marcus defended."You could have at least had the decency to tell me,""I didn't think it would bother you so much, and quite frankly, I'm a bit confused about why you're upset; it's not the first time I've helped out without you knowing about it.""That doesn't make it okay!""Can you just come right out and tel
Elena watched as Marcus stood at the door, talking to Gavin. It made her really nervous. What if he was telling Marcus about their relationship? Would he do something like that? Her heart skipped a couple of beats when Marcus crossed his arms, a defensive look on his face. She couldn't breathe peacefully until Marcus turned to her, "Babe, Gavin wants to see you," he said casually and then gestured for Gavin to come into their room, then he left.Elena breathed out a sigh of relief; at least Gavin wasn't that selfish. And even if he did tell Marcus, he would have ended up with a broken nose and probably a broken jaw, too."I guess this is where the magic happens," Gavin said sarcastically as he walked into the room properly, hands tucked in his jeans."What do you want?""A favour," he said simply, and Elena snorted in response."I'm serious. I need your help," he said, his voice much more serious. Elena straightened up a bit and arched an eyebrow at him, "with what?""Pearl, my daught
