"Will he like these?"

The woman reached for the champagne roses, brushing the ribbon I'd just tied.

"He will."

She smiled and lifted her phone.

"Michael, I was so busy helping you lock down that project today, I forgot to order your custom flower box. So I grabbed this bouquet instead. Is the contract ready?"

His soft voice came through the screen.

"It's ready. The flowers don't matter. If they're from you, I'd love a blade of grass."

"A blade of grass?"

"Seriously, Christy. If it's from you, I'll treasure it."

I looked down and smoothed the wrapping paper.

The edge scraped my fingertip, leaving a pale line but no blood.

I'd asked him that once.

Back then, before he joined his current company, I bought some daisies at a flea market and made him a bouquet.

He took one look, set it on the entryway table, and said, "Eunice, flowers for a guy are kinda weird. Don't waste your money next time."

I still made him one for every anniversary.

He still dumped them wherever.

One time, they wilted and the water started to stink.

He frowned. "You made this mess. Clean it up."

Christy handed me her card.

"Go ahead."

I took it. "Want a message on the card?"

"Yes."

She thought for a second, then asked Michael, "What should I write?"

He laughed.

"'Congrats to Mr. Lynham on his promotion.'"

Christy scoffed. "That sounds way too formal."

"Then write, 'Wishing my Michael even more success.'"

He paused.

"But don't make it too cheesy, babe. My coworkers might see."

"What are you scared of?"

"I'm not." His voice softened. "I just want you all to myself. I don't want people talking about you."

I slid the card into the bouquet, my fingers freezing over two words.

[My Michael.]

In five years, I'd never once stepped inside his office.

He said he was still new. Still trying to prove himself.

If people knew he had a fiancée, they'd think he wasn't hungry enough.

He promised he'd go public after the promotion.

He even told me not to wear my ring to work because his female coworkers loved to gossip.

And I believed him.

Every single word.

Christy glanced at me.

"Can you hurry? He's waiting."

I handed her the bouquet.

"All set."

She hugged it to her chest and turned to the camera.

"Does it look good?"

"It does when you're holding it."

My fingers brushed the scissors on the counter.

The cold metal sent a chill through my hand.

Satisfied, Christy headed for the door.

Then she glanced back. "Do you deliver? I don't feel like driving over next time."

"We do."

"Cool. Let me add you."

I slid my business card across the counter.

She scanned the code.

Her profile pic was a pink limited-edition Squishmallow.

The exact same one Michael had given me.

He said he'd waited in line for two hours.

Said I was the only one who had it.

I'd hung mine beside the register.

That day, he ruffled my hair and smiled.

"Eunice, we're gonna have a good life someday."

As Christy walked out with the bouquet, Michael said, "Text me when you get downstairs. I'll come get you."

The second the call ended, his voice message and an urgent document popped up.

"Eunice, I'm slammed today. Draft this contract for me, like last time."

Whenever he said he was busy, I felt bad.

I thought he was working this hard for us.

No matter how late I stayed at the shop, I always finished his contracts.

Not this time.

I opened my order instead.

The Rolex still said In Transit.

I stared at the price.

That watch had cost every cent I'd saved over six months.

Late nights. Extra orders. Skipped meals. Total burnout.

All because he once said a businessman needed a nice watch to look the part.

Turns out, someone else was already helping him fake it.

I tapped [Request Return & Refund.]

"D-Doctor..." Michael stammered, his voice barely coming out. "You're kidding, right? Her hands have always been amazing. She makes the best floral arrangements in the city."How can you say she can never do it again?"Dr. Stafford frowned at the stranger who'd barged in. "Are you family?"I'm not joking. The nerve damage in her hand is severe. She needs to stop working immediately and prepare for surgery."Otherwise, she could permanently lose the use of that hand."Michael stumbled back until he hit the doorframe. His eyes dropped to my right hand.To the tiny scar he'd never even noticed.I got it years ago while buying cuff links for his interview shirt at a flea market.A loose piece of wire pierced my hand at a cheap stall. To save money on a doctor, I pulled it out myself with nail clippers. The wound got infected. The scar stayed. That was the price I paid to help build his future. And now it was costing me the dream I'd spent my whole life chasing."It was me...

I thought humiliating Michael in the rain would finally get him out of my life.I was wrong. Two weeks later, fate threw us together again in the last way I wanted. That afternoon, I skipped the warehouse and went to the city's orthopedic hospital. For the past two weeks, my right thumb and index finger had been cramping more and more.Sometimes, I couldn't even grip a basic pair of pruning shears. At first, I blamed overwork. Then that morning, my right hand suddenly gave out while I was pouring hot water. The cup crashed to the floor, scalding water splashing everywhere. The exam room reeked of disinfectant.Dr. Stafford studied my MRI and nerve test results, his brow tightening."Why did you wait so long to get this checked?"My heart dropped."Is it that bad?"He sighed, clipped the scans to the lightbox, and pointed near the base of my thumb."The nerves and tendons here have permanent damage. There's atrophy and scar tissue."Based on the scar, you had a deep punc

I set down the inventory sheet and stepped out from behind the workbench. Then I stopped in front of Michael and picked up the cream coat he'd been guarding like it was all he had left. The cashmere was unbelievably soft. Warm, too.Three years ago, on that freezing winter night, if he'd wrapped it around my shoulders after another brutal shift, I might've been moved enough to keep breaking my back for him another five years. But now?He was too late.Hope flashed in Michael's eyes.He thought I was finally giving in.I let go.The thousand-dollar cream coat floated down and landed in a filthy puddle of muddy water and rotting leaves. The cream cashmere stained instantly.Michael's eyes went wide."No!"He lunged for it.Too slow.I raised my waterproof boot and stomped down.Mud squished beneath my boot as I ground the coat deeper into the muck. His precious proof of sincerity disappeared under dirty water and rotting leaves. The warehouse went dead silent.Only rai

Three days later, I was checking a shipment of imported roses at a floral supply warehouse outside the city.I wore a plain waterproof apron and gloves. After selling my shop, I didn't rush to open another. I took an inventory job at a major flower distributor instead.I needed time to reset and figure out my next move.Outside, rain came down in a solid gray sheet."Ms. Emerton, there's a guy asking for you. He's been standing out there for almost half an hour. Security can't get him to leave."Vincent stepped in, shaking off his umbrella. He looked uneasy. My hands paused. Then I tossed a broken rose into the trash."Let him stand there. Ignore him."I'd underestimated how desperate Michael had gotten.Minutes later, the heavy warehouse door flew open.Cold wind and rain blasted inside.Michael stood in the doorway, soaked head to toe.No umbrella. Hair plastered to his forehead. Pale face. Hollow eyes. Dark stubble across his jaw.His once-perfect suit was wrinkled, m

The files exposed everything.Every kickback Michael had taken from Howell Corp. projects over the past six months.Every shady contract he'd used to hide them.Every sweet message he'd ever sent me.Smack! The slap cracked through the dining room.Michael's head whipped sideways. His wineglass hit the floor and shattered, splashing red across his designer suit."Christy?" He grabbed his cheek, stunned. Terrified. "What the hell are you doing?""What am I doing?" She shoved a contract in his face. "Michael Lynham, who the hell do you think you are?"You stole from my family and used me to climb the ladder?"The second Michael saw the document, all the color drained from his face. His knees almost buckled."Please, let me explain. This is a misunderstanding. Someone set me up—""Shut up!"Christy stared him down, ice-cold. "I hate liars.
