Chapter 2

Author: Tiny Puff
I looked up.

A Squishmallow lay by the door.

The exact same one Michael had given me.

Half an hour later, I was trimming lisianthus when Christy sent me a voice message.

"Hey, did I leave my Squishmallow at your shop?"

I texted back.

[There's a pink one here. I set it aside for you.]

She replied instantly.

[Yes! It's limited edition. My boyfriend gave it to me. I'll come grab it.]

I glanced at mine hanging beside the register.

Two years old.

Its nose was already fading.

Christy's looked brand-new. Soft, fluffy, with glittery eyes.

Half an hour later, the door opened.

Michael walked in.

The second he saw me, he froze. "Eunice."

I set the Squishmallow on the counter. "Thought you were on a business trip."

He didn't look at the toy.

His eyes dropped to my hand.

No ring.

Something flashed across his face, then vanished.

"I was too busy to explain earlier."

"You don't have to."

"Don't be mad." His voice softened. "Christy's family works with my company. I just got promoted. I can't risk pissing her off."

I shoved the Squishmallow toward him.

"Take it to her."

Michael looked at the new Squishmallow, then the faded one in my hand.

He reached for my hair.

I stepped away.

His hand hung there before dropping.

"It's not what you think."

"She thinks you're her boyfriend."

"That's just how girls like her talk." He tightened his grip on the toy. "Eunice, don't make this harder. I need her family's connections right now. Once I land the company's biggest project and prove myself, I'll make it up to you. The house. The wedding. I'll give you double."

I stopped wiping the counter and looked at his fake, shameless face.

My stomach twisted.

Still, I forced a small smile.

"Sure. Good luck."

Relief washed over him.

"I knew you'd understand."

He pulled a stack of cash from his wallet and set it on the counter.

"She already paid for the flowers. This is extra."

I stared at the cash.

"What's this for?"

"Christy has a temper. She hates people touching her stuff." He paused. "If you see her again, don't mention me. Don't give her the wrong idea."

I smiled. "Are you scared she'll get the wrong idea, or find out the truth?"

His face darkened, then softened. "I'm protecting you."

"Protecting me?"

"Her family isn't one we can mess with." He pushed the cash closer. "Just deal with it for now. Don't contact me. Wait until I sort everything out."

"How long?"

Michael looked away. "Not long."

"A month? Six months? Or until you marry her?"

He frowned. "Don't talk like that."

I nodded, picked up the cash, and counted it bill by bill.

A car beeped outside.

Christy walked in wearing sunglasses.

The second she saw Michael at the counter, her voice went cold.

"What took you so long?"

Michael turned and casually handed her the Squishmallow.

"I wanted to make sure the shop owner didn't give you the wrong one."

Christy looked me over. "The wrong one? Why does she have one too?"

"Probably a fake."

Christy grabbed hers and brushed it off, disgusted. "Don't buy me something this basic again."

Michael smiled. "Okay. I'll get you something pricier next time."

At the door, Christy suddenly glanced back.

"You're pretty good at counting cash."

"I run a business. I'd better be."

She laughed. "Fair."

Michael never looked back.

I put the money away and hung my old Squishmallow beside the register again.

Then his text popped up.

[I'll come see you tomorrow.]

I left him on read, got up, and locked the shop.

Six months later.Eunoire Atelier officially opened in the heart of the city's hottest shopping district. No tacky grand-opening flower arrangements.Instead, I covered the entire storefront in a floating sea of over ten thousand preserved champagne roses. The display blew up online overnight.Dressed in a tailored black silk suit, I stood in the lobby with a glass of champagne in my left hand, chatting with top wedding planners and luxury mall executives who'd come to celebrate.A slim support brace wrapped around my right hand.I couldn't do hours of detailed trimming anymore. But I didn't need to.I was the owner. The chief designer.I created the vision. My senior florists brought it to life.Right after I signed a million-dollar annual floral contract, my phone buzzed.[$1,000,000 received.]Then a message from Christy popped up.I'd added her six months ago and never deleted her number.[Ms. Emerton, that's the full payment for Howell Corp.'s floral services for

"D-Doctor..." Michael stammered, his voice barely coming out. "You're kidding, right? Her hands have always been amazing. She makes the best floral arrangements in the city."How can you say she can never do it again?"Dr. Stafford frowned at the stranger who'd barged in. "Are you family?"I'm not joking. The nerve damage in her hand is severe. She needs to stop working immediately and prepare for surgery."Otherwise, she could permanently lose the use of that hand."Michael stumbled back until he hit the doorframe. His eyes dropped to my right hand.To the tiny scar he'd never even noticed.I got it years ago while buying cuff links for his interview shirt at a flea market.A loose piece of wire pierced my hand at a cheap stall. To save money on a doctor, I pulled it out myself with nail clippers. The wound got infected. The scar stayed. That was the price I paid to help build his future. And now it was costing me the dream I'd spent my whole life chasing."It was me...

I thought humiliating Michael in the rain would finally get him out of my life.I was wrong. Two weeks later, fate threw us together again in the last way I wanted. That afternoon, I skipped the warehouse and went to the city's orthopedic hospital. For the past two weeks, my right thumb and index finger had been cramping more and more.Sometimes, I couldn't even grip a basic pair of pruning shears. At first, I blamed overwork. Then that morning, my right hand suddenly gave out while I was pouring hot water. The cup crashed to the floor, scalding water splashing everywhere. The exam room reeked of disinfectant.Dr. Stafford studied my MRI and nerve test results, his brow tightening."Why did you wait so long to get this checked?"My heart dropped."Is it that bad?"He sighed, clipped the scans to the lightbox, and pointed near the base of my thumb."The nerves and tendons here have permanent damage. There's atrophy and scar tissue."Based on the scar, you had a deep punc

I set down the inventory sheet and stepped out from behind the workbench. Then I stopped in front of Michael and picked up the cream coat he'd been guarding like it was all he had left. The cashmere was unbelievably soft. Warm, too.Three years ago, on that freezing winter night, if he'd wrapped it around my shoulders after another brutal shift, I might've been moved enough to keep breaking my back for him another five years. But now?He was too late.Hope flashed in Michael's eyes.He thought I was finally giving in.I let go.The thousand-dollar cream coat floated down and landed in a filthy puddle of muddy water and rotting leaves. The cream cashmere stained instantly.Michael's eyes went wide."No!"He lunged for it.Too slow.I raised my waterproof boot and stomped down.Mud squished beneath my boot as I ground the coat deeper into the muck. His precious proof of sincerity disappeared under dirty water and rotting leaves. The warehouse went dead silent.Only rai

Three days later, I was checking a shipment of imported roses at a floral supply warehouse outside the city.I wore a plain waterproof apron and gloves. After selling my shop, I didn't rush to open another. I took an inventory job at a major flower distributor instead.I needed time to reset and figure out my next move.Outside, rain came down in a solid gray sheet."Ms. Emerton, there's a guy asking for you. He's been standing out there for almost half an hour. Security can't get him to leave."Vincent stepped in, shaking off his umbrella. He looked uneasy. My hands paused. Then I tossed a broken rose into the trash."Let him stand there. Ignore him."I'd underestimated how desperate Michael had gotten.Minutes later, the heavy warehouse door flew open.Cold wind and rain blasted inside.Michael stood in the doorway, soaked head to toe.No umbrella. Hair plastered to his forehead. Pale face. Hollow eyes. Dark stubble across his jaw.His once-perfect suit was wrinkled, m

The files exposed everything.Every kickback Michael had taken from Howell Corp. projects over the past six months.Every shady contract he'd used to hide them.Every sweet message he'd ever sent me.Smack! The slap cracked through the dining room.Michael's head whipped sideways. His wineglass hit the floor and shattered, splashing red across his designer suit."Christy?" He grabbed his cheek, stunned. Terrified. "What the hell are you doing?""What am I doing?" She shoved a contract in his face. "Michael Lynham, who the hell do you think you are?"You stole from my family and used me to climb the ladder?"The second Michael saw the document, all the color drained from his face. His knees almost buckled."Please, let me explain. This is a misunderstanding. Someone set me up—""Shut up!"Christy stared him down, ice-cold. "I hate liars.
