Chapter 2

作者: Green Fur
Richard was a textbook case of a snob. He had always disliked me ever since I reunited with the Sanders family.

Although I was the true heiress, I grew up in the sticks. My results were nothing to write home about, and I had a dull personality.

Meanwhile, Layla received an elite education since she was a child and was multitalented. She was a reputable figure in school, which also made her the perfect person for Richard to use to earn a higher bonus.

Richard scoffed and slapped two stacks of index cards on the desk.

"Look for yourself, Talia! This stack of cards is the possible answers that Layla came up with herself. Meanwhile, I found this stack of cards hidden in your desk. The solutions, steps, and themes are exactly the same as Layla's!

"Although the surveillance cameras didn't catch you sneaking a peek at Layla's notes, can you swear that you didn't look at them before the exam? Can you swear that you didn't do such a malicious deed?

"It's even more ridiculous because you always failed your mock tests in the past. How is it possible for you to score 1,400 points during the actual exam? Do you think that the examiners are blind? Do you take us for fools?"

The students around us began to whisper among themselves. Their eyes were full of disdain.

"I've heard the rumors that Talia was jealous of Layla. I didn't expect her to have such a wicked personality."

"She's just a dirty cheat. How embarrassing."

"A country bumpkin will always resort to underhanded methods."

Layla's sobbing intensified. She looked like she had just experienced a terrible tragedy and was on the verge of collapsing.

"If you want the position of top scholar, I can let you have it, Talia. Why did you stoop so low?"

Mom looked as though her heart was breaking. She hugged Layla tightly before aiming a fierce glare at me.

"Just look at how upset Layla is because of you, Talia! How can you still act like you didn't do anything wrong? What on earth did I do to deserve giving birth to a despicable daughter like you?

"You must apologize to Layla in front of all the students and teachers! You also have to write a letter of reflection and admit that you cheated during the exam before leaving the school. If you don't, I'll just have to pretend that I never had a daughter like you and kick you out of the Sanders family!"

Kick me out of the Sanders family?

In my past life, Mom's threat had haunted me like a curse.

To stay with my so-called family, to cling to that pitiful excuse of maintaining a familial relationship with them, I had dropped to my knees to grovel for their forgiveness and admit that I had cheated even though it was a lie.

In exchange, the Sanders family treated me with even more vitriol, and I ended up dying.

I barked out a mocking laugh as I looked at Mom's familiar yet unfamiliar face.

"I can't believe you're still in the mood to laugh."

An intimidating masculine voice resounded as the office door slammed open.

My father—the president of Sanders Group—Timothy Sanders, stormed into the office. He didn't spare me a single glance as he walked over to Layla and asked, "Are you alright, Layla? You've had a tough time."

Layla's eyes were bloodshot as she shook her head. "I'm fine, Dad. It's just that… Talia…"

Dad whirled around, lifting his hand to slap me.

I didn't let him touch me this time. I dodged to the side and grabbed his wrist, saying, "You should get to the bottom of things before raising your hand against me, Dad."

Dad stared at me in disbelief, seemingly shocked that I had retaliated.

"The entire world is turning upside down! You ungrateful child! It's already humiliating enough that you cheated during the exam. How dare you raise your hand against your elder?

"Get to the bottom of things? The situation at hand is that you're a shameless cheat who copied your sister's answers to steal her glory! I can't believe that an upstanding citizen such as myself has a stain like you in my life!"

"Security! Drag her to the main square right now! I want her to write her letter of reflection in front of everyone in the school!"

The two security guards, who had been standing like sentinels by the door, leaped into action upon hearing Dad's words. They advanced toward me and tried to grab me.

"Wait."

My back hit the edge of the desk when I took a step backward. I quickly grabbed the box cutter that was lying on the table.

The blade glinted coldly under the light.

"I don't mind spilling some blood today if you dare lay a single finger on me."

The color drained from Dad's face. His lips trembled, but he couldn't say a word. After all, I had seen right through him and exposed his nefarious schemes.I turned around and addressed the media."I'd like to use this opportunity to clarify some things. I, Talia Sanders, have nothing to do with the Sanders family of Asterville. I achieved what I did thanks to my mentors' guidance and the country's support. My success has nothing to do with the blood that runs through my veins."As for the shares of Sanders Group," I said as I shot a mocking look at Dad. "You can keep them and use them during your senior years. Although, according to what I've heard, there's probably only about a day or two left before you'll be forced to declare bankruptcy."I turned around after I was done speaking, not bothering to spare them another glance."Don't go, Talia! How can you be so cruel? I'm your father! You'll be punished for your transgressions!" Dad roared before the security guards dragged him

Mom and Dad reappeared just as I thought that the dust had settled and I was preparing to welcome my new life. They waited for me in front of the school gates, camped out in front of the laboratories, and even tried to bribe the security guards.Unfortunately for them, the security guards hired to maintain security at the National University of Defense Science weren't people who could be bribed by mere entrepreneurs like them.…The orientation for the junior program was held a month later. The university's president placed great importance on the event since talented students from all over the country were joining the program. Thus, he decided to host the banquet in the most upscale convention center in the heart of the city.Countless media outlets and financial tycoons were present at the banquet.Dad used all the connections he had to secure two tickets in the standing area located furthest away from the stage. When George and I went up on stage and stood under the spotligh

In my past life, I hid my talents to get on the Sanders family's good side. I even attributed some of my research results to Layla, which ultimately helped build her image as a young genius. In this life, I was no longer interested in pretending to be someone I wasn't.Right before SAT started, I sent my thesis that would rock the entire world to George.I had submitted a blank paper not only to humiliate the Sanders family, but also to completely cut ties with them and my past."Okay. I'll go with you," I said calmly.Layla crumpled to the floor. Her eyes shone with hopelessness and jealousy. No matter how much she tried, she couldn't wrap her head around the fact that I was a genius even though I grew up in the sticks. She also couldn't believe that George had personally invited me to go to the university with him.Dad finally snapped back to his senses upon hearing that I was leaving. He immediately presented himself as a doting father and rushed forward to grab my hands. "I

The papers floated through the air before scattering all over the floor. The people who were present reached out to grab them, gasping in surprise when they got a good look at them."The winner of the provincial math tournament was none other than Talia!""She also won the national physics competition! That's amazing!""Oh my god. She was also the previous provincial high school top scholar!"Dad was too stunned to speak.Meanwhile, Richard had gone pale. "That's impossible… She's just a country bumpkin. How can she be a genius?" he muttered.Ashton stepped forward and delivered his ultimatum. "Richard, you planted fake evidence to frame a student even though you're a teacher. You're a disgrace to the academic field. Officers, this is an extremely serious crime. Please be sure to conduct a thorough investigation!"Richard nearly had a mental breakdown upon hearing his words. He fell to his knees before pointing at Layla and screaming, "It wasn't me! I didn't plan this! It was L

The rest of my exam paper was displayed on the screen. Both sections were blank, including the mathematics, and reading and writing. All four sections totaled to 1,600 points. I submitted a blank paper, which meant that I had scored zero points.Chaos erupted in the comments section of the live stream."She's got some guts to submit a blank paper during SAT. Hats off to her!""If she actually cheated during the exam, I can only say that she's not very good at it…""Hold on. If Talia submitted a blank paper, why was Mr. Hoffman so sure that Layla and Talia's answers were identical?""What a terribly meticulous plan! They were planning on framing her from the start!"Mom and Dad's jaws had slackened.Richard looked as if he had been struck by lightning. His lips trembled as he murmured, "This… This is impossible…"The color had drained from Layla's face, and she was frozen like a statue. She couldn't understand why my paper was blank. She had seen with her own two eyes how I ha

I raised my hand and calmly said, "That's me."Mom and Dad's faces paled at the arrival of the staff members from the Department of Education. The situation was escalating. They just wanted to quietly get rid of me while I was still in school and didn't expect the authorities to get involved—and that too, at the provincial level.Meanwhile, Richard felt as if his legs had turned to jelly. Sweat drenched the back of his shirt. He convinced himself that things would be fine since my results were usually abysmal, so even if my request to examine the papers was approved, my score would be low or even zero.As long as he insisted that I had cheated during the exam, things would still work out in his favor.Richard pointed at me and shouted, "That's her, Mr. Peters! Not only did she cheat during the exam, but she also disrupted school order! I have proof that she hid her cheating materials in her desk!"Ashton glanced at him and said coldly, "We will verify the evidence later, but for
