Arya.

The waves lapped against me, furious and unrelenting. I fought hard against the tides, breaking out of the surface of the water to catch my breath. My arms flailed about helplessly as the water filled my lungs, knocking air out of them. I thrashed about, but instead of floating like I desperately wanted to, I sank deeper, faster, as if heavy chains were bound to my feet. Edgar’s face appeared right above mine.

“You were never supposed to survive,” he sneered mockingly. “You should have died when I made it easy for you.”

Just as his words registered, a force yanked at my legs, pulling me down into the deep.

I woke up with a start, parting my lips to release a scream that never came. The first thing my eyes came in contact with was the plain white ceiling above me. The world was silent. Still.

Until the noise returned.

~Arya~Lucien linked his fingers together, a glint of satisfaction in his eyes as he watched Edgar. The latter was on the verge of breaking down. His knuckles had turned white, and he was crumpling the document in his hands. “I got them through legal means. That’s all you need to know. Now–” he cut himself off, gesturing to the paper Edgar was holding. “Care to tell me why you’re tearing my proof of share ownership?"Taken aback, Edgar threw the paper on the table, running his hand down his pants. “I got carried away, Mr Vale. It's nothing to get saucy over.”“The only one getting saucy here is you.”“Gentlemen,” Mr Anderson interrupted tactfully, his eyes darting between Edgar and Lucien. “We’re here to hold a voting to determine Mrs Sinclair’s status in this company. Can we commence, please?”Lucien’s face broke out in a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. He nodded, linking his fingers together. “Let’s begin.”The voting commenced. A ballot box was placed in a corner, and everyone

~Arya~His hands balled into tight fists. Furious, he closed the distance between us, leaning into me. “You haven't changed one bit, Arya,” he whispered fiercely. “You’re still full of yourself, desperate to have the same power I do. But times are different. The people you see here today are all on my side. None of them will support you.”I stared straight into his eyes, unflinching. “Once again, Mr Sinclair, be careful with your assumptions.”He let out an exasperated breath, stepping away from me. I could see his confidence waver. The men he was willing to put his trust in didn’t look like they were on his side. Of course, some were loyal, a few people I could pinpoint. But others were curious about the dead wife who had returned. “Gentlemen,” he huffed. “Let’s adjourn this meeting. As we all know, Mrs Sinclair is not in her right mind. This is all my fault, I should have kept her in check as her husband. I will make sure she gets the right treatment before she resumes affairs her

~Arya~It’s been a year since I walked these floors. A wave of nostalgia hit me as soon as the car stopped in the parking lot of Obsidian Holdings, the company I had poured my all into. I produced a compact mirror from my bag and checked my reflection in it, taking a deep breath. Everything was in place. I looked the part of a woman who knew what she wanted and was determined to get it. Hair slicked back, deep shade of red lipstick on, expensive perfume lingering in the air- the same type that commanded respect back then, determination flooding through me. Plastering a smile on my face, I alighted from the car and adjusted my blazer, staring at the high rise building before me.“Mrs Sinclair,” a familiar voice floated into my ears. It was none other than Clara, my personal assistant. I hadn’t seen her in such a long time. She looked the same as I remembered, professional and sleek, tablet in hand. But she had tears behind her lids. She sniffled and dipped her head, forcing a smile. “I

~Arya~The house was eerily quiet when we got back. All traces of that disastrous dinner had been wiped out by the maids, and Lina was back at the station where she’d remain until I decided otherwise. Edgar slid his hands into his pockets, his footsteps light on the floor beside me. He had been quiet all through the ride back, but I could guess what was going through that scheming head of his.“I wish we didn’t leave Lina back there,” he mouthed, rubbing the back of his head absently. “You said you were happy about her pregnancy, yet you didn’t drop the charges against her.”“Shouldn’t you be grateful that the charges against you were dropped?”“I am.” He let out a breathless laugh. “I’m grateful. My reputation would have taken a deep dive if you didn’t get me out, but the mother of my unborn child is there. If things go wrong, she could go to jail."His reputation. That was the only concern he had. I smiled faintly, turning to him. “An investigation will be conducted. I’m sure you ha

~Arya~The words made Lina whip her head around to look at him in shock. I suppressed a smirk. What the hell was she expecting? Now that Edgar knew who I really was, he’d do all he could to get on my good side. Did she think he’d pick her over climbing the social ladder?Lucien came up beside me. Edgar glanced at him expressionless. “I’m certain Mr Vale here made the accusation against me, but I'm innocent. I totally forgot that you’re allergic to lobsters. That was foolish of me.”Lina crossed her arms, leaning back in her seat. “How come we’re just finding out who your parents are, Arya? Why did you hide your identity ever since?”I blew out a breath, signalling for the sheriff to leave the room. Once we were left alone, I sank in a chair across them. “I’m as surprised as you are,” I huffed, feigning confusion. “Edgar, you should know about my parents. I must have mentioned them to you before we got married or something.”“You didn’t.” The excitement in his voice was palpable. “Th

~Arya~I woke up to my parents by my bedside. My mom framed my hand with hers, her tear streaked cheeks coming into focus. My father stood behind her, a stern expression on his face. He doesn’t look happy, or pleased. That was to be expected, considering the fact that I almost killed myself just to prove a point to Lina and Edgar. Lucien leaned against the wall in the distance, his jaw set like stone.“Sweetheart.” Matilda's grip on my hand tightened. “You’re awake.”“What were you thinking, Arya?” my father thundered. “How could you risk your life like that?”“Dad,” I protested, sitting up on the bed weakly. “You don’t have to worry about me. I knew what I was doing.”My words only made him flare up. “You are a very stubborn woman. I let you live your life the way you want, and I refuse to take any more chances. If Lucien wasn’t present at that dinner, those fools would have let you die.”I knew that. I wouldn’t have eaten that dish if Lucien wasn’t present either. I could understan
