~Arya~

The wedding was the talk of the town. It was everywhere, in the news, on the blogs, and in gatherings. While I lay unconscious for a year, Edgar played the perfect role of a victimized husband. He made everyone believe that he had been in a toxic marriage with me. That was enough to make me the hated wife, and Lina, the saviour. I was long forgotten, thought to be dead.

The days blurred by. I spent them in the hospital, bidding my time and gathering all the information I needed until the big day. Now that it was here, I was way more pumped than I could have ever imagined. Against Lucien's directive, I had driven solo to the wedding venue and was eagerly waiting for the event to begin. The place was packed with reporters with their assistants and cameras stationed to capture the arrival of the bride and groom.

The calls came in earlier than expected. I glanced at my phone in the passenger seat of the car and bit down on my lower lip as Lucien's name blinked on the screen. He wa

  • She Came Back to Burn: The Return of the Amnesiac Wife.   ~THIRTY-TWO: BOARD MEETING

~Arya~It’s been a year since I walked these floors. A wave of nostalgia hit me as soon as the car stopped in the parking lot of Obsidian Holdings, the company I had poured my all into. I produced a compact mirror from my bag and checked my reflection in it, taking a deep breath. Everything was in place. I looked the part of a woman who knew what she wanted and was determined to get it. Hair slicked back, deep shade of red lipstick on, expensive perfume lingering in the air- the same type that commanded respect back then, determination flooding through me. Plastering a smile on my face, I alighted from the car and adjusted my blazer, staring at the high rise building before me.“Mrs Sinclair,” a familiar voice floated into my ears. It was none other than Clara, my personal assistant. I hadn’t seen her in such a long time. She looked the same as I remembered, professional and sleek, tablet in hand. But she had tears behind her lids. She sniffled and dipped her head, forcing a smile. “I

  • She Came Back to Burn: The Return of the Amnesiac Wife.   ~THIRTY-ONE: DEEP DIVE

~Arya~The house was eerily quiet when we got back. All traces of that disastrous dinner had been wiped out by the maids, and Lina was back at the station where she’d remain until I decided otherwise. Edgar slid his hands into his pockets, his footsteps light on the floor beside me. He had been quiet all through the ride back, but I could guess what was going through that scheming head of his.“I wish we didn’t leave Lina back there,” he mouthed, rubbing the back of his head absently. “You said you were happy about her pregnancy, yet you didn’t drop the charges against her.”“Shouldn’t you be grateful that the charges against you were dropped?”“I am.” He let out a breathless laugh. “I’m grateful. My reputation would have taken a deep dive if you didn’t get me out, but the mother of my unborn child is there. If things go wrong, she could go to jail."His reputation. That was the only concern he had. I smiled faintly, turning to him. “An investigation will be conducted. I’m sure you ha

~Arya~The words made Lina whip her head around to look at him in shock. I suppressed a smirk. What the hell was she expecting? Now that Edgar knew who I really was, he’d do all he could to get on my good side. Did she think he’d pick her over climbing the social ladder?Lucien came up beside me. Edgar glanced at him expressionless. “I’m certain Mr Vale here made the accusation against me, but I'm innocent. I totally forgot that you’re allergic to lobsters. That was foolish of me.”Lina crossed her arms, leaning back in her seat. “How come we’re just finding out who your parents are, Arya? Why did you hide your identity ever since?”I blew out a breath, signalling for the sheriff to leave the room. Once we were left alone, I sank in a chair across them. “I’m as surprised as you are,” I huffed, feigning confusion. “Edgar, you should know about my parents. I must have mentioned them to you before we got married or something.”“You didn’t.” The excitement in his voice was palpable. “Th

  • She Came Back to Burn: The Return of the Amnesiac Wife.   ~TWENTY-NINE: THE MANCHESTER HEIRESS

~Arya~I woke up to my parents by my bedside. My mom framed my hand with hers, her tear streaked cheeks coming into focus. My father stood behind her, a stern expression on his face. He doesn’t look happy, or pleased. That was to be expected, considering the fact that I almost killed myself just to prove a point to Lina and Edgar. Lucien leaned against the wall in the distance, his jaw set like stone.“Sweetheart.” Matilda's grip on my hand tightened. “You’re awake.”“What were you thinking, Arya?” my father thundered. “How could you risk your life like that?”“Dad,” I protested, sitting up on the bed weakly. “You don’t have to worry about me. I knew what I was doing.”My words only made him flare up. “You are a very stubborn woman. I let you live your life the way you want, and I refuse to take any more chances. If Lucien wasn’t present at that dinner, those fools would have let you die.”I knew that. I wouldn’t have eaten that dish if Lucien wasn’t present either. I could understan

  • She Came Back to Burn: The Return of the Amnesiac Wife.   ~TWENTY-EIGHT: JACKPOT

~Edgar~I froze mid step, turning in the direction of the formidable voice. Two figures advanced towards me, looking like luxury and class embodied. I didn’t need an introduction. No one needed that when the most influential couple in the country just walked into the room. The Manchesters. George and his wife, Matilda. Ever since I discovered them in high school, they became people I looked up to. I had always hoped that I would meet them someday. I didn’t expect that day to be today.Lina’s hands flew to her mouth. Her eyes widened in pure horror as she stared at them. Pure panic flashed across her features. “”Oh my god!” she exclaimed. “Why on earth are they here?”I inched closer to her. “What’s wrong?”Before she could reply, George stopped in front of me. “Edgar Sinclair, we should have met a long time ago.”I glanced behind me to see if he was referring to someone else, but he wasn’t. Did he just call me by my name? This man knew me of all people? Was I dreaming or something?

  • She Came Back to Burn: The Return of the Amnesiac Wife.   ~TWENTY-SEVEN: I'M HER HUSBAND

~Arya~The silence that settled over the table was so thick I could hear my own heartbeat. Edgar and Lina exchanged a glance. He bared his teeth, revealing his frustration. His feigned patience, Lina's suspicious smile, the perfect trap they had laid out for me, I could see through it all. “This is the main dish, Arya,” Amanda said. She smeared butter over the seafood on her plate and filled her mouth with it. “You don’t want to miss this divine taste for anything in the world.”I arched a brow at her. Was she in on this too? Was that why they were here? To watch me fall? To see if I was still the foolish Arya I had been back then.”“You should eat up, all of you,” I said softly. “If it’s that delicious, then I can't stop you from enjoying yourselves."Lily snickered. “But you’re the star of the show. We can’t eat if you aren’t eating.”That was all the confirmation I needed. They were all in on this. A few nervous laughs came from the guests. Edgar leaned into me, his breath warm a
