Chapter 4

Penulis: Lovelyn
"Ethan, are you out of your mind? You actually hit Julian.

"Have I been too soft on you? Is that it? Give you an inch and you take the whole house."

I barely heard her.

I was still on my knees, looking at what was left of my father's figurine.

Then one of her friends spoke up.

"Olivia, you can't let a man behave like that."

Sloane leaned back with her drink.

"A man only learns when you teach him properly."

Bree glanced toward the window. Rain was coming down hard enough to blur the glass.

"I've got an idea.

"Make him take the old car out. The one from the accident.

"Have him push it to a hundred and ten on the interstate. Didn't you say he's terrified of driving? That'd teach him."

Olivia said nothing for a few seconds, and I could see her weighing it.

Then she nodded.

"Fine. Maybe he needs one real lesson."

Everything in me went still.

Olivia knew exactly why I couldn't drive.

I'd been behind the wheel the night of the crash that killed my father. Since then I'd avoided it whenever I possibly could.

Nobody knew that better than she did.

I got up and headed for the door.

She caught my wrist.

Her face gave me nothing.

"If I don't discipline you, you're never going to learn."

Then her friends walked me out to the garage. Olivia followed.

"The car has a driver-assistance system. If anything goes wrong, it takes the wheel for you.

"You're not going to die. It's a lesson. That's all."

Thunder cracked over the roof. The rain was coming down in sheets.

Then the garage door lifted and I stopped breathing.

The car sitting inside was the one I'd been driving the night my father died.

This wasn't discipline.

She wasn't trying to teach me anything. She was trying to kill me.

I fought them.

So Olivia took out her phone.

"If you don't get in, I can always make a call about your mother's store."

Eight years together had taught her every soft place I had, and she was pressing on all of them at once.

My fists closed. My chest was too tight to pull a full breath.

"Fine. I'll drive."

The second I sat down behind the wheel, my whole body started shaking.

That night came back in pieces I couldn't stop.

I reached for the door handle.

Locked.

Olivia stood on the other side of the window, watching me.

"Go.

"If you don't, your mother's store is finished."

Then she settled back against Julian, perfectly happy, like this was a normal evening.

Ten marriages.

Ten divorces.

Ten times I'd forgiven her.

I'd kept telling myself that one day she'd remember who we used to be.

I'd been wrong about that for eight years.

I put my foot down.

The car shot out into the rain.

There was nothing in me but panic, and I made myself keep driving anyway.

The rain wiped out the road ahead of me.

It washed out the last of what I felt for Olivia right along with it.

Back at the house, Olivia sat with her friends and played cards.

They were teasing her about it.

"Ethan is obsessed with you. Ten marriages, ten divorces, and now you've canceled the Love Insurance on top of it.

"That's eleven times you've hurt that man and he's still standing there."

It warmed her, hearing it.

She knew Ethan loved her past the point of sense. That was the whole reason she'd felt safe divorcing him again and again, safe canceling the policy, safe doing any of it.

"Obviously," she said. "That's why I can afford to teach him a lesson.

"When he gets back, one sentence out of me and he'll be apologizing on his knees."

She was pleased with herself.

Then she looked out the window, and the rain had gotten worse, and something cold slid into her chest.

Ethan's father had died on a night like this one. Ethan hadn't been able to get behind a wheel since.

He'd be fine. He had to be fine.

The more she turned it over, the worse it got, until she picked up her phone and called him.

He didn't answer.

She was still staring at the screen when an unknown number rang through.

"Is this Olivia Grant? Your husband's been in an accident. His car went into the ocean.

"You need to get down here."

She looked at me and there was still hope in it."Eth. Would you start over with me?"I answered gently."I'm sorry. I have a girlfriend."The door opened and Hannah Brooks came in.I'd met her overseas. She was the one who sat with me while I learned how to have a life again.Something went out of Olivia's eyes. The tears came faster."You really don't love me anymore?"I took Hannah's hand."No. I really don't."Everyone has to move forward eventually. Don't they."Hannah and I are getting married next month. You'd be welcome to come."I took the invitation out of my coat and held it out.Her tears came down onto the envelope. She had a hand pressed to her chest and she was shaking through all of it.She looked exactly the way I used to look. There'd been a time when all I wanted in the world was for her to stop divorcing me. She hadn't stopped. She'd gotten worse.Olivia bit down on her lip hard enough to draw blood and didn't seem to notice it.She only looked at

The company was afraid of what she might do to herself, so in the end they asked me to go and see her. When I got there she was in the bed, pale down to her lips. She saw me and smiled."I knew you'd come."You do remember me. Don't you."Eth, we loved each other once."I stayed near the door."I do remember you."The hope came up in her face all at once."But I don't love you anymore."The color went out of her. Her mouth started shaking."I know I hurt you. I know how many times."But I understand now. I divorced Julian. It's done."It's only going to be you and me from here on."She got out of the bed while she was talking and put her arms around me.Her tears went through my shirt. What I felt was revulsion. That surprised me more than anything else had. I'd loved this woman enough to take my own career apart for her, and now I couldn't stand her hands on me.I pushed her off."Olivia. This is finished."It isn't as though I never gave you a chance.""I know yo

"I asked you, more than once, whether you were certain."You signed the termination without a second's hesitation."Every word of it landed, and the regret kept climbing, and there was no getting out from under it."I know I was wrong. I've left the other man. I'm not with him anymore."Please. Just tell me where he went.""I'm not going to."All I can tell you is that Mr. Reed is never coming back, and you're never going to see him again."She walked out of there hollowed out, and for weeks afterward she moved through her own life like a woman who'd already left it.Then she went to my mother.Mom took one look at her and started closing the door.Olivia went down on her knees on the step."Diane. Please."Mom stared at her for a long moment. Then the part of her that had loved this girl once got the better of her."What good does any of this do now? Ethan's gone."And I'll tell you something else. You don't deserve what he felt for you."You thought he quit the piano b

There was more after that.I'd written that I'd been cut too many times over the years, and that every single time I'd chosen to swallow it.That the Love Insurance was the last chance I had it in me to give her.Olivia understood all of it at once. She put a hand over her mouth and the tears kept coming, and the despair came up over her like water. She had always believed Ethan would go on loving her no matter what she did.She was only now finding out that his heart could be worn all the way through. She regretted it. She regretted every one of them. After the funeral, Olivia went home hollow. The pieces of my father's figurine were still on the floor where they'd fallen. She saw them and broke."I'm sorry, Ethan. I was wrong."Then a voice came out of the bedroom."Baby, I'll bring up the divorce in a little while. We'll have half her assets before long."It was Julian.Olivia went still, then moved toward the door.He was still going."I was going to string her alo

By the time Olivia reached the site, police and rescue crews were working the shoreline in the rain.An officer came over to her."Your husband was driving extremely fast, ma'am. We pulled the traffic-camera footage."He was doing at least a hundred and ten. The car lost control, went through the barrier, and went into the water."Officer Hutchins held up a sealed evidence bag."We found his phone on the roadway. He may have thrown it out trying to get help."Each sentence landed harder than the one before it.Her face emptied out. Her ears were ringing."No. That's not possible."That car has a driver-assistance system. It was supposed to protect him."Then she saw the crews working the water and ran at them."Ethan!"Please. Don't do this to me. Please be all right."That was the first moment Olivia understood what losing someone permanently might actually feel like. She dropped to her knees in the rain and cried until she couldn't breathe.Hutchins was still talking b
