Chapter 3

Penulis: Lovelyn
Olivia had always known that. She'd known it for years.

She'd thrown it anyway.

"Serves you right," she said.

"You ruined one of the happiest days Julian and I have ever had. So don't come near me for a while. I'm busy.

"Take your mother and go."

I hadn't thought she could be that cold.

Eight years together, and there wasn't a scrap of feeling left in her for me. Not one.

My eyes swelled shut. My face went hot and thick. Breathing turned into work.

I tried to ask for help.

Olivia took Julian's hand and walked out.

She never looked back.

When I woke up, I was in a hospital bed.

A stranger from the restaurant had called for both of us. The doctor said that if we'd come in much later, the reaction could have killed me.

I thought about the restaurant, and the pain came back in waves.

Then I thought about Mom.

She came in a few minutes later with a bandage on her head, telling me she was fine, that it was nothing.

I let out a breath I'd been holding since the ambulance.

And once I was calm, the decision hardened all the way through.

I was leaving.

Then my phone rang.

Her name on the screen.

"Come home and cook tonight," she said. "I'm bringing friends over."

For a second I thought I'd misheard.

"You put me and my mother in the hospital.

"I can't cook."

Her voice hardened.

"Ethan, what is your problem?

"I pushed your mother one time and now you're punishing me?

"Did you forget what you promised me? You said you'd take care of me for the rest of your life."

I remembered.

I also remembered her saying the exact same words to me.

She'd broken that promise ten times.

"No."

Her tone changed.

"Then I'll send people down to your mother's grocery store. I wonder how much of it will still be standing when they're done."

My blood went cold. That store was Mom's whole life.

"Don't."

"Then come home."

The line went dead.

I went.

Olivia's family had money and reach. There was no version of this where I won.

I wasn't going to let her hurt my mother again on my account.

I cooked. Olivia came home with a crowd of friends behind her, Julian among them.

She held his hand the entire evening, and her face stayed soft the whole time.

A new diamond sat on her left hand.

Julian wore the match.

Something in my stomach dropped.

Then Julian stopped at the display cabinet.

"Whoa. This thing is incredible."

He lifted out an old limited-edition figurine.

Olivia barely glanced at it.

"If you like it, keep it."

"No."

The word was out before I could stop it.

I crossed the room.

"Put it down."

My father gave me that figurine when I was a kid. After he died, it became one of the last things I had that still felt like him. I'd taken care of it for twenty years.

I reached for it, and Olivia swung her purse into my chest.

Her eyebrows drew down. Her eyes were furious.

"It's a toy, Ethan.

"Can you seriously not stand to see Julian happy for one night?

"The man is dying. Why do you have to keep at him?"

My hands started shaking, and so did my voice.

"Olivia. That was the last thing my father ever gave me."

For half a second she faltered.

Then her face closed.

"So what? He's dead. Hanging on to a piece of plastic doesn't bring him back."

Her voice was flat.

"But fine. If you want it that badly, take it."

She snatched it out of Julian's hands.

It slipped.

It hit the floor and broke into pieces.

Something in my chest went with it.

"No. No, no—"

I dropped to my knees and started gathering fragments off the tile.

Julian crouched down beside me, pretending to help. When Olivia wasn't looking, I saw it in his eyes.

Satisfaction. He thought I had it coming.

The anger got out ahead of me.

I hit him.

The slap landed a second later. Olivia's palm across my face, hard enough to turn my head.

Her cheeks were red with it.

She looked at me and there was still hope in it."Eth. Would you start over with me?"I answered gently."I'm sorry. I have a girlfriend."The door opened and Hannah Brooks came in.I'd met her overseas. She was the one who sat with me while I learned how to have a life again.Something went out of Olivia's eyes. The tears came faster."You really don't love me anymore?"I took Hannah's hand."No. I really don't."Everyone has to move forward eventually. Don't they."Hannah and I are getting married next month. You'd be welcome to come."I took the invitation out of my coat and held it out.Her tears came down onto the envelope. She had a hand pressed to her chest and she was shaking through all of it.She looked exactly the way I used to look. There'd been a time when all I wanted in the world was for her to stop divorcing me. She hadn't stopped. She'd gotten worse.Olivia bit down on her lip hard enough to draw blood and didn't seem to notice it.She only looked at

The company was afraid of what she might do to herself, so in the end they asked me to go and see her. When I got there she was in the bed, pale down to her lips. She saw me and smiled."I knew you'd come."You do remember me. Don't you."Eth, we loved each other once."I stayed near the door."I do remember you."The hope came up in her face all at once."But I don't love you anymore."The color went out of her. Her mouth started shaking."I know I hurt you. I know how many times."But I understand now. I divorced Julian. It's done."It's only going to be you and me from here on."She got out of the bed while she was talking and put her arms around me.Her tears went through my shirt. What I felt was revulsion. That surprised me more than anything else had. I'd loved this woman enough to take my own career apart for her, and now I couldn't stand her hands on me.I pushed her off."Olivia. This is finished."It isn't as though I never gave you a chance.""I know yo

"I asked you, more than once, whether you were certain."You signed the termination without a second's hesitation."Every word of it landed, and the regret kept climbing, and there was no getting out from under it."I know I was wrong. I've left the other man. I'm not with him anymore."Please. Just tell me where he went.""I'm not going to."All I can tell you is that Mr. Reed is never coming back, and you're never going to see him again."She walked out of there hollowed out, and for weeks afterward she moved through her own life like a woman who'd already left it.Then she went to my mother.Mom took one look at her and started closing the door.Olivia went down on her knees on the step."Diane. Please."Mom stared at her for a long moment. Then the part of her that had loved this girl once got the better of her."What good does any of this do now? Ethan's gone."And I'll tell you something else. You don't deserve what he felt for you."You thought he quit the piano b

There was more after that.I'd written that I'd been cut too many times over the years, and that every single time I'd chosen to swallow it.That the Love Insurance was the last chance I had it in me to give her.Olivia understood all of it at once. She put a hand over her mouth and the tears kept coming, and the despair came up over her like water. She had always believed Ethan would go on loving her no matter what she did.She was only now finding out that his heart could be worn all the way through. She regretted it. She regretted every one of them. After the funeral, Olivia went home hollow. The pieces of my father's figurine were still on the floor where they'd fallen. She saw them and broke."I'm sorry, Ethan. I was wrong."Then a voice came out of the bedroom."Baby, I'll bring up the divorce in a little while. We'll have half her assets before long."It was Julian.Olivia went still, then moved toward the door.He was still going."I was going to string her alo

By the time Olivia reached the site, police and rescue crews were working the shoreline in the rain.An officer came over to her."Your husband was driving extremely fast, ma'am. We pulled the traffic-camera footage."He was doing at least a hundred and ten. The car lost control, went through the barrier, and went into the water."Officer Hutchins held up a sealed evidence bag."We found his phone on the roadway. He may have thrown it out trying to get help."Each sentence landed harder than the one before it.Her face emptied out. Her ears were ringing."No. That's not possible."That car has a driver-assistance system. It was supposed to protect him."Then she saw the crews working the water and ran at them."Ethan!"Please. Don't do this to me. Please be all right."That was the first moment Olivia understood what losing someone permanently might actually feel like. She dropped to her knees in the rain and cried until she couldn't breathe.Hutchins was still talking b

"Ethan, are you out of your mind? You actually hit Julian."Have I been too soft on you? Is that it? Give you an inch and you take the whole house."I barely heard her.I was still on my knees, looking at what was left of my father's figurine. Then one of her friends spoke up."Olivia, you can't let a man behave like that."Sloane leaned back with her drink."A man only learns when you teach him properly."Bree glanced toward the window. Rain was coming down hard enough to blur the glass."I've got an idea."Make him take the old car out. The one from the accident."Have him push it to a hundred and ten on the interstate. Didn't you say he's terrified of driving? That'd teach him."Olivia said nothing for a few seconds, and I could see her weighing it.Then she nodded."Fine. Maybe he needs one real lesson."Everything in me went still.Olivia knew exactly why I couldn't drive.I'd been behind the wheel the night of the crash that killed my father. Since then I'd avoid
