"Mason, are you kidding me?" My friend went silent for a couple of seconds. Realizing I was serious, he answered firmly, "No way!"

My suspicion was confirmed—Robert Miller was lying. He sure had a lot of nerve. I couldn't believe he'd forge a miracle drug that affected patients' lives.

I was infuriated. I turned around and planned to tell my wife, Sophia Cooper, the news right away.

Sensing my gaze, Robert flashed me a triumphant smirk. "I heard you spent seven years researching the same new drug as mine, Mason. In the end, you didn't accomplish a damn thing! I feel bad for Ms. Cooper for wasting seven years of her youth on you."

Sophia, who had been feeling somewhat guilty toward me, instantly became angry and displeased. Pointing her index finger at me, she fumed, "Hurry up and sign the agreement and get lost, Mason. Don't ruin our momentous day!"

As I took in the sight of my wife, who was sweet and clingy on a video call with me just last night, yet was now eager to start a family with another man, I was heartbroken. However, I forgave her because she had been deceived by Robert. The moment I told her the truth, she would regret it.

"Robert's drug patent is a total fraud, Sophia!" I announced.

Sophia was first taken aback. Then, she sneered and picked up the glass of red wine from the table.

Without the slightest hesitation, she hurled it at my face. "I'm so disappointed in you, Mason. You're such a sore loser. I can't believe you'd be petty enough to frame Robert. Robert and I picked up that patent certificate together, so I know damn well whether it's legit or fabricated!"

"In that case, let's compare them! There can't be two identical patent certificates in this world. One of ours has to be fabricated!" I declared before pulling out my own certificate to show everyone.

Sophia glanced between Robert and me before nudging him. "Go get yours and prove Mason wrong, Rob!"

Robert didn't budge. Instead, he snatched my patent certificate, skimmed through it, and declared, "This is obviously generated by AI. I can't believe you'd go as far as forging documents just to frame me, Mason.

"You've completely crossed the bottom line of the pharmaceutical industry. I've decided to call on the entire industry, in the name of Sophon Pharmaceuticals, to blacklist you!"

I almost laughed out loud when I heard that. "You? Blacklist me? You're just an ordinary employee at Sophon Pharmaceuticals. Who do you think you are to issue a statement in Sophon Pharmaceuticals' name?"

Robert looked as though he had been slapped across the face. He turned to Sophia, his face filled with embarrassment and hurt.

Sophia hurriedly held his hand to comfort him. Then, she glared daggers at me. "Let me make this clear, Mason—you're not resigning; you're fired! Robert is being promoted on the spot to Deputy CEO of Sophon Pharmaceuticals."

I was dumbfounded. I couldn't believe she was treating personnel changes as casually as if she were playing house. Was this still the same ambitious woman I knew who wanted to become the most powerful female CEO?

Robert mistook my shock for fear. He puffed up his chest and jeered, "Mason, even though you keep flinging mud at me, I'm a kind-hearted man. So long as you apologize and admit you're inferior to me 300 times, I'll let you off the hook!"
