Chapter 2

Author: OstRich
Never did I think that Daniella would extinguish Mom's perpetual candle just to make Jackson happy. In fact, we'd actually lit the candle together, and she'd even paid for half of it.

"Don't worry," she had told me. "Your mom will live a long life. She'll be there on the day we get married."

I felt my sanity snap. Disregarding the monastery's rule of solemn silence, I rushed forward.

"Daniella Dooley! That's my mother's perpetual candle! Who gave you the right to put it out?"

The two of them turned around, clearly surprised to see me there.

Jackson grinned from ear to ear at me. "Oh? I didn't think you'd have the time to stroll around the monastery, Allen. Didn't you say your mother was critically ill?"

His words instantly caused Daniella's expression to turn cold. "I didn't think you'd stoop to lying about something like that just to get me to come back, Allen!"

And I couldn't believe she would distrust me to this extent. She'd rather believe I was using Mom's illness to deceive her than believe Mom was actually at death's door.

A bitter laugh rose in my chest. Perhaps the tears prickling in my eyes were too obvious, because her tone softened slightly.

"Forget it, I'll let it slide. You probably only came up with such a terrible scheme because you missed me too much.

"I've already put out your mother's perpetual candle for you. It's just superstition anyway. With me around, she'll definitely live a long life, so there's no need to use up a slot. It's better to give it to someone who truly needs it."

Someone who truly needed it? Was that supposed to be Jackson?

Swallowing the dull ache in my chest, I bit out, "Don't you even think about switching out the candle!"

There was a smug, gloating smile on Jackson's face, but his tone sounded utterly aggrieved.

"Dani, if Allen isn't willing to switch it, then let's just forget it. He must be angry because you didn't make it back in time when his mother needed surgery a few days ago.

"I'm sorry, Allen. I apologize to you on Dani's behalf. It's all my fault for being so dumb. I messed up the surgery and had to beg her to clean up my mess," he added with a smirk.

Daniella immediately chimed in. "Jack is my mentor's son. Can you stop being so petty?"

Jackson's father was Daniella's mentor, a man she greatly respected and was very grateful to. I knew she was someone who valued loyalty and relationships. I had even magnanimously comforted her in the past, telling her that I wouldn't be jealous and would treat Jackson like a sibling, too.

But somehow, Daniella saw that as having permission to treat him better and better, without restraint, as if she were certain I'd never be jealous.

Everyone at the hospital knew how close and inseparable the two of them were.

One night, after she hadn't come home for dinner yet again because of him, I waited up until midnight, wanting to have a proper talk with her.

However, all I got was her flying into a rage, insisting she saw him only as a younger brother. It was my first time learning that a pair of siblings could share the same set of cutlery, or that the so-called younger brother could throw himself into the so-called older sister's arms whenever he felt wronged.

I couldn't help but sneer.

"I don't care if you're his sister or his 'sister'," I mocked. "That has nothing to do with me. But right now, neither of you is allowed to touch my mom's perpetual candle!"

Daniella's voice sharpened with anger. "Allen, this is a sacred monastery. Can you stop spewing nonsense like a madman? Things between Jack and me are completely innocent! I only see him as a younger brother. You're the one being narrow-minded and letting your imagination run wild!

"If you continue to make a fuss, I'll have no choice but to consider calling off the engagement!"

If this had been the past, I'd have backed down immediately. But now, all I felt bubbling inside me was anger and a sense of absurdity.

"No need," I scoffed. "I've already called off the engagement. If you two don't leave right now, I'll record everything and post it online. Everyone will know you stole someone else's perpetual candle!"

Daniella pinched the bridge of her nose, looking a little exhausted.

"Allen, can you please be reasonable?"

In front of the shocked monks and visitors, I grabbed an altar candle and brandished it at the pair.

"You want me to be more reasonable? Have I not been reasonable enough, Daniella? I've been with you for eight years! Jackson's been back in the country for less than two. Every time you abandoned me for him, was I unreasonable then?

"Whenever someone says the two of you are perfect together and that I'm not good enough for you, do you have any idea how sad that makes me?

"But you do know, don't you? The thing is, you agree with them. You think that I'm not good enough for you either and that I can never leave you, and that's why you dare to hurt me so recklessly!"

After that, I lost consciousness.Just before I blacked out, I felt something warm and metallic-smelling spray across my face.…It was only after I regained consciousness that I learned that Daniella had saved me. In doing so, the excavator had crushed her legs, while I was held tightly beneath her and remained completely unharmed.Just as I got out of the hospital bed, I ran into the furious Jackson. The once polished young heir was now bawling like a baby, and the look he gave me was as if I'd murdered his whole family."Allen, you jinx! If you wanted to kill yourself, then you should've just done so! Why did you have to drag Dani down with you? Now look what happened! Her legs had to be amputated! She'll have to spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair! Are you happy now?"With how cruel you are, no wonder the universe took your father and child. Even your mother was jinxed to death by you!"Upon hearing that last sentence, I could no longer contain my rage. I grabbed him

Upon learning Daniella was pregnant, I insisted on taking responsibility. But the happiness didn't last long. She worked herself too hard and eventually lost the baby.Afterward, I assumed she'd break up with me, but she never brought it up. And so I kept playing dumb, continuing to stay by her side as her boyfriend.Back then, everyone called me calculating. They all said that I had orchestrated the entire thing just so I could use the pregnancy as a way to marry into a wealthy family. When the rumors were at their wildest, Claire Grundan, Daniella's mother, offered me a million dollars to leave her daughter. It was Daniella who appeared right then and defended me."Mom, I know who Allen is better than anyone. He's not the kind of man who would stop at nothing just to climb the social ladder."I never expected that the woman who had stood up for me so fiercely back then had never truly believed I was innocent. She'd doubted me all along. The thought made me laugh bitterly."S

"If it were your parents who died, would you still be talking so nonchalantly?" I roared after hearing Jackson downplay my pain. The moment his own family was mentioned, Jackson's expression changed."Allen, I was just trying to comfort you. Why are you cursing my family?"He turned to the silent Daniella with an aggrieved look. "Dani, I know Allen is grieving because his mother died, but what does that have to do with my family? If he absolutely insists that this is my fault, then I'll just apologize to him. After all, he is your boyfriend."In the past, Daniella would've already started yelling at me for overreacting and wronging Jackson. But this time, she didn't."Enough. He's in a bad mood. Can't you stop talking?" she said to him, a hint of irritability in her voice.Jackson's eyes widened in disbelief, as if he couldn't believe his ears.Ever since he returned to the country, Daniella had practically treated him like the center of her world. Whoever upset him or made him

Daniella instinctively shot back at her assistant, "What on earth are you talking about? If his mother had died, the hospital would've notified me right away. There's no way I wouldn't have heard something about it!"But her assistant's voice only sounded even more certain than before."I'm really not lying, Ms. Dooley. I went to the hospital myself and asked the nurses. Because the surgery wasn't performed in time, and the resuscitation failed, Mr. Hensley's mother passed away."Daniella's phone slipped from her hand and hit the ground, breaking into two pieces. She looked at me, still kneeling on the ground and in utter despair. Then, for the first time, she crouched down before me."Al, why didn't you tell me something as big as your mom passing away? I'm sorry for only finding out about it just now."She reached out, wanting to hug me.Snapping back to reality, I shoved her away with all my strength and roared, "Go away! Don't touch me!"How dare you say I never told you,

I clenched my jaw so hard my temples throbbed.Other than being a top OB-GYN, Daniella was also the daughter of a real estate magnate. My hometown hadn't been touched in so many years, yet the moment I returned, it was suddenly marked for redevelopment. Anyone with eyes could see what was going on—Daniella was doing this purely to help Jackson vent his spite.I ground my teeth and spat out, "Get lost! Don't make me say it twice!"The moment the words left my mouth, a cold voice came from outside the gate."Jackson knows your mother is critically ill, and that you're too proud to accept my money even though you need it. So, out of the kindness of his heart, he asked me to include your house in the redevelopment zone. Yet, instead of thanking him, you're being so rude?"I turned around and met Daniella's displeased gaze.Kindness? What kind of kindness was that? It was nothing more than her wanting revenge for Jackson and forcing me to submit.I spread my arms wide, blocking them

The flame brushed past Daniella's hair. Her face turned pale as she swatted it away."Allen Hensley," she roared. "Take a look at where you are before you throw a tantrum! This is the monastery, not a market!"Hiding behind her, Jackson had a smug look on his face."Dani, this is all my fault," he said, forcing a helpless smile. "If only I hadn't come back to the country. Don't worry, Allen. I'll resign tomorrow and go abroad. I'll never show up in front of you again."The more aggrieved he sounded, the more disappointed Daniella's gaze toward me was."Why would you leave? You haven't done anything wrong. The one in the wrong here is him, for making a mountain out of a molehill and pushing things too far!"Allen, I'm giving you one last chance. Apologize to Jack!"The wax from the melting candle dripped onto the back of my hand, but it was nothing compared to the ache in my heart."Why should I apologize? I'm the victim here. Also, did I ever say anything about forcing him to l
