Chapter 1

Author: OstRich
The moment Mom's EKG flattened into a straight line, my own heart felt like it had stopped alongside hers.

The doctor pulled off his mask, sweat still on his forehead, as he tried to console me.

"We did everything we could, Allen. I'm sorry for your loss."

Everyone looked at me with sympathy, but even more so with pity. After all, everyone knew that the only surgeon capable of operating on Mom was Daniella Dooley. And right now, she was busy comforting a junior of hers.

Mom lay in the hospital bed, her eyes tightly shut and face drained of all color. I couldn't bring myself to look for long. I wiped away my tears and, with shaking hands, called Daniella yet again.

When the cold, automated voice hit my ears, I couldn't hold it in any longer. I threw myself over Mom's body, weeping hysterically and begging her to open her eyes and look at me.

I cried until my legs gave out, and I ended up kneeling on the cold, hard floor.

Through a blur of tears, I noticed the framed photo on the bedside table. It was a photo of Mom, me, and Daniella.

That was the first time I brought Daniella back to meet Mom. The always frugal woman had specially hired a professional photographer for the occasion.

I forced myself to stay upright and bring Mom to the crematorium. I watched her turn into ashes, reduced to a tiny porcelain urn I could hold in my hands.

After the funeral, Daniella finally called back.

"Allen Hensley, what are you doing? Why aren't you replying to my messages?"

I didn't even have the strength to speak.

She continued to vent for a little longer before hanging up.

I tapped open her messages. There was only a short one.

"Jack ran into a bit of a situation and is in a bad mood. I'll come back after I handle it. Have your mother wait a bit longer."

The timestamp showed that it was from two days ago. By then, Mom was already dead.

As a sharp pain cut through my numb chest again, I pulled up Jackson Bleeth's social media.

In just three short days, he had uploaded no less than 10 posts—from bragging about how Daniella had backed him up when something went wrong with a surgery of his, to talking about how she'd taken time off so she could take him to the beach. She did all that just to cheer him up.

Below the posts, comments from mutual friends were full of teasing, egging them on.

"Didn't someone say that her hands were far too precious to ever cook?"

"It's different this time."

My eyes burned when I saw Daniella's reply.

But of course. In everyone's eyes, Jackson and Daniella shared similar family backgrounds, the same interests, and even the same profession.

If Jackson hadn't gone abroad back then, the two of them would've been together publicly a long time ago.

I was merely a choice Daniella had resorted to out of necessity.

It was only after Mom's death that I truly understood something—a choice made out of necessity would always be the first to be abandoned.

With that thought in mind, I quickly typed a reply to Daniella.

"Daniella, the engagement is off. We're done."

Without waiting for a reply, I blocked her and deleted all her contacts. Then I returned to the apartment I'd shared with her for the past eight years and threw away everything related to her.

For eight years, my life had revolved entirely around Daniella. But after removing her from it, all that was left could fit into a single suitcase.

Holding Mom's urn close to my chest, I shut the door behind me without looking back.

Before leaving the city, I deliberately went to a monastery. Back when Mom first fell sick, I had donated half my savings to keep a perpetual candle burning there. Now, it was time to go back and show my gratitude.

What I didn't expect, however, was to run into Daniella and Jackson.

"Dani, you're really too good to me. I only mentioned it in passing, and you really brought me here to light a perpetual candle. I heard that it's really hard to light these here because there's a fixed slot. What if the original owner of the candle we just extinguished finds out and gets mad at us?"

Daniella patted his curly hair gently.

"Don't worry. You've got me."

After that, I lost consciousness.Just before I blacked out, I felt something warm and metallic-smelling spray across my face.…It was only after I regained consciousness that I learned that Daniella had saved me. In doing so, the excavator had crushed her legs, while I was held tightly beneath her and remained completely unharmed.Just as I got out of the hospital bed, I ran into the furious Jackson. The once polished young heir was now bawling like a baby, and the look he gave me was as if I'd murdered his whole family."Allen, you jinx! If you wanted to kill yourself, then you should've just done so! Why did you have to drag Dani down with you? Now look what happened! Her legs had to be amputated! She'll have to spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair! Are you happy now?"With how cruel you are, no wonder the universe took your father and child. Even your mother was jinxed to death by you!"Upon hearing that last sentence, I could no longer contain my rage. I grabbed him

Upon learning Daniella was pregnant, I insisted on taking responsibility. But the happiness didn't last long. She worked herself too hard and eventually lost the baby.Afterward, I assumed she'd break up with me, but she never brought it up. And so I kept playing dumb, continuing to stay by her side as her boyfriend.Back then, everyone called me calculating. They all said that I had orchestrated the entire thing just so I could use the pregnancy as a way to marry into a wealthy family. When the rumors were at their wildest, Claire Grundan, Daniella's mother, offered me a million dollars to leave her daughter. It was Daniella who appeared right then and defended me."Mom, I know who Allen is better than anyone. He's not the kind of man who would stop at nothing just to climb the social ladder."I never expected that the woman who had stood up for me so fiercely back then had never truly believed I was innocent. She'd doubted me all along. The thought made me laugh bitterly."S

"If it were your parents who died, would you still be talking so nonchalantly?" I roared after hearing Jackson downplay my pain. The moment his own family was mentioned, Jackson's expression changed."Allen, I was just trying to comfort you. Why are you cursing my family?"He turned to the silent Daniella with an aggrieved look. "Dani, I know Allen is grieving because his mother died, but what does that have to do with my family? If he absolutely insists that this is my fault, then I'll just apologize to him. After all, he is your boyfriend."In the past, Daniella would've already started yelling at me for overreacting and wronging Jackson. But this time, she didn't."Enough. He's in a bad mood. Can't you stop talking?" she said to him, a hint of irritability in her voice.Jackson's eyes widened in disbelief, as if he couldn't believe his ears.Ever since he returned to the country, Daniella had practically treated him like the center of her world. Whoever upset him or made him

Daniella instinctively shot back at her assistant, "What on earth are you talking about? If his mother had died, the hospital would've notified me right away. There's no way I wouldn't have heard something about it!"But her assistant's voice only sounded even more certain than before."I'm really not lying, Ms. Dooley. I went to the hospital myself and asked the nurses. Because the surgery wasn't performed in time, and the resuscitation failed, Mr. Hensley's mother passed away."Daniella's phone slipped from her hand and hit the ground, breaking into two pieces. She looked at me, still kneeling on the ground and in utter despair. Then, for the first time, she crouched down before me."Al, why didn't you tell me something as big as your mom passing away? I'm sorry for only finding out about it just now."She reached out, wanting to hug me.Snapping back to reality, I shoved her away with all my strength and roared, "Go away! Don't touch me!"How dare you say I never told you,

I clenched my jaw so hard my temples throbbed.Other than being a top OB-GYN, Daniella was also the daughter of a real estate magnate. My hometown hadn't been touched in so many years, yet the moment I returned, it was suddenly marked for redevelopment. Anyone with eyes could see what was going on—Daniella was doing this purely to help Jackson vent his spite.I ground my teeth and spat out, "Get lost! Don't make me say it twice!"The moment the words left my mouth, a cold voice came from outside the gate."Jackson knows your mother is critically ill, and that you're too proud to accept my money even though you need it. So, out of the kindness of his heart, he asked me to include your house in the redevelopment zone. Yet, instead of thanking him, you're being so rude?"I turned around and met Daniella's displeased gaze.Kindness? What kind of kindness was that? It was nothing more than her wanting revenge for Jackson and forcing me to submit.I spread my arms wide, blocking them

The flame brushed past Daniella's hair. Her face turned pale as she swatted it away."Allen Hensley," she roared. "Take a look at where you are before you throw a tantrum! This is the monastery, not a market!"Hiding behind her, Jackson had a smug look on his face."Dani, this is all my fault," he said, forcing a helpless smile. "If only I hadn't come back to the country. Don't worry, Allen. I'll resign tomorrow and go abroad. I'll never show up in front of you again."The more aggrieved he sounded, the more disappointed Daniella's gaze toward me was."Why would you leave? You haven't done anything wrong. The one in the wrong here is him, for making a mountain out of a molehill and pushing things too far!"Allen, I'm giving you one last chance. Apologize to Jack!"The wax from the melting candle dripped onto the back of my hand, but it was nothing compared to the ache in my heart."Why should I apologize? I'm the victim here. Also, did I ever say anything about forcing him to l
