Chapter 3

Author: OstRich
The flame brushed past Daniella's hair. Her face turned pale as she swatted it away.

"Allen Hensley," she roared. "Take a look at where you are before you throw a tantrum! This is the monastery, not a market!"

Hiding behind her, Jackson had a smug look on his face.

"Dani, this is all my fault," he said, forcing a helpless smile. "If only I hadn't come back to the country. Don't worry, Allen. I'll resign tomorrow and go abroad. I'll never show up in front of you again."

The more aggrieved he sounded, the more disappointed Daniella's gaze toward me was.

"Why would you leave? You haven't done anything wrong. The one in the wrong here is him, for making a mountain out of a molehill and pushing things too far!

"Allen, I'm giving you one last chance. Apologize to Jack!"

The wax from the melting candle dripped onto the back of my hand, but it was nothing compared to the ache in my heart.

"Why should I apologize? I'm the victim here. Also, did I ever say anything about forcing him to leave the country? I was clearly only wishing the two of you a long and happy life together!"

Jackson immediately bit his lower lip, looking utterly aggrieved.

"Allen, I'll leave right now. You don't have to be so passive-aggressive."

Daniella grabbed his wrist before roaring at me, "Don't force me to break up with you, Allen Hensley!"

Hearing that made me take a step forward.

"You don't get to be the one who breaks it off. I dumped you a long time ago, got it?"

Staring at the burning candle, she nervously shielded Jackson behind her.

"Put the candle down first, Allen. If anything happens to Jack, I'll never forgive you—"

I had heard enough.

"How would I ever dare to touch him? After all, he has you backing him. I'm just a nobody who can't afford to get on his wrong side."

She instantly realized I was referring to Jackson's social media posts, and she relaxed slightly.

"If you're jealous, you can just say it, Allen. There's no need to make such an ugly scene. I know I've been neglecting you lately. Just wait until I—"

It was always like this. Daniella knew perfectly well that what angered me wasn't just her practically non-existent boundaries with Jackson, but also her dismissive attitude.

"Shut up!" I cut her off, utterly irritated.

"I don't care even if you two get married and have kids! But if either of you dares to touch my mother's perpetual candle, I'll fight you to the death!"

For the very first time, Daniella saw a flash of pure, unadulterated disgust in my eyes. She flinched, then slightly softened her demeanor.

"Al, how's your mom doing?"

My eyes reddened as I replied, "Good."

She was already waiting for me on the other side.

Not catching the break in my voice, Daniella breathed a sigh of relief.

"See, I told you everything would be fine. Just tell her to hang on for a few more days. Once I'm done with my other patients, I'll come back and perform her surgery.

"There. You should be satisfied now, right?"

When I didn't respond, she took a step forward. I immediately stepped back, brandishing the candle at her again.

"Can you get lost now?"

Her expression darkened. Then, as if to deliberately provoke me, she intertwined her fingers with Jackson's.

"Let's see how long you can keep being so stubborn, Allen."

Under the speculative stares of the monastery visitors, I felt all my strength drain from me. I smiled bitterly as I placed the candle back in the burner and apologized to the monks.

Then, I went to check on Mom's perpetual candle.

Maybe it was just my imagination, but among all the lit candles, Mom's flame shone the brightest, as though she were comforting me.

All of a sudden, my tears came streaming down. I crouched there and wept for a long time.

I brought Mom's ashes back to our hometown. After Dad passed, she had taken me and moved away from there.

Looking at the dusty, neglected house, I decided to give it a proper cleanup.

The next day, when I returned home after buying some supplies, I found the front gate broken open.

The little stool and table Dad had handmade for me were smashed to pieces, and Mom's clothes—which I had left out to dry—lay on the ground, covered in dirt.

Jackson stood in the yard, barking orders.

Blood rushed to my head, and I charged forward in a rage.

"Stop! What are you doing? Breaking and entering is illegal! I'll sue you!"

Jackson pulled out an official demolition permit.

"Go ahead. Dani said this area is slated for redevelopment, so we can smash whatever we want."

After that, I lost consciousness.Just before I blacked out, I felt something warm and metallic-smelling spray across my face.…It was only after I regained consciousness that I learned that Daniella had saved me. In doing so, the excavator had crushed her legs, while I was held tightly beneath her and remained completely unharmed.Just as I got out of the hospital bed, I ran into the furious Jackson. The once polished young heir was now bawling like a baby, and the look he gave me was as if I'd murdered his whole family."Allen, you jinx! If you wanted to kill yourself, then you should've just done so! Why did you have to drag Dani down with you? Now look what happened! Her legs had to be amputated! She'll have to spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair! Are you happy now?"With how cruel you are, no wonder the universe took your father and child. Even your mother was jinxed to death by you!"Upon hearing that last sentence, I could no longer contain my rage. I grabbed him

Upon learning Daniella was pregnant, I insisted on taking responsibility. But the happiness didn't last long. She worked herself too hard and eventually lost the baby.Afterward, I assumed she'd break up with me, but she never brought it up. And so I kept playing dumb, continuing to stay by her side as her boyfriend.Back then, everyone called me calculating. They all said that I had orchestrated the entire thing just so I could use the pregnancy as a way to marry into a wealthy family. When the rumors were at their wildest, Claire Grundan, Daniella's mother, offered me a million dollars to leave her daughter. It was Daniella who appeared right then and defended me."Mom, I know who Allen is better than anyone. He's not the kind of man who would stop at nothing just to climb the social ladder."I never expected that the woman who had stood up for me so fiercely back then had never truly believed I was innocent. She'd doubted me all along. The thought made me laugh bitterly."S

"If it were your parents who died, would you still be talking so nonchalantly?" I roared after hearing Jackson downplay my pain. The moment his own family was mentioned, Jackson's expression changed."Allen, I was just trying to comfort you. Why are you cursing my family?"He turned to the silent Daniella with an aggrieved look. "Dani, I know Allen is grieving because his mother died, but what does that have to do with my family? If he absolutely insists that this is my fault, then I'll just apologize to him. After all, he is your boyfriend."In the past, Daniella would've already started yelling at me for overreacting and wronging Jackson. But this time, she didn't."Enough. He's in a bad mood. Can't you stop talking?" she said to him, a hint of irritability in her voice.Jackson's eyes widened in disbelief, as if he couldn't believe his ears.Ever since he returned to the country, Daniella had practically treated him like the center of her world. Whoever upset him or made him

Daniella instinctively shot back at her assistant, "What on earth are you talking about? If his mother had died, the hospital would've notified me right away. There's no way I wouldn't have heard something about it!"But her assistant's voice only sounded even more certain than before."I'm really not lying, Ms. Dooley. I went to the hospital myself and asked the nurses. Because the surgery wasn't performed in time, and the resuscitation failed, Mr. Hensley's mother passed away."Daniella's phone slipped from her hand and hit the ground, breaking into two pieces. She looked at me, still kneeling on the ground and in utter despair. Then, for the first time, she crouched down before me."Al, why didn't you tell me something as big as your mom passing away? I'm sorry for only finding out about it just now."She reached out, wanting to hug me.Snapping back to reality, I shoved her away with all my strength and roared, "Go away! Don't touch me!"How dare you say I never told you,

I clenched my jaw so hard my temples throbbed.Other than being a top OB-GYN, Daniella was also the daughter of a real estate magnate. My hometown hadn't been touched in so many years, yet the moment I returned, it was suddenly marked for redevelopment. Anyone with eyes could see what was going on—Daniella was doing this purely to help Jackson vent his spite.I ground my teeth and spat out, "Get lost! Don't make me say it twice!"The moment the words left my mouth, a cold voice came from outside the gate."Jackson knows your mother is critically ill, and that you're too proud to accept my money even though you need it. So, out of the kindness of his heart, he asked me to include your house in the redevelopment zone. Yet, instead of thanking him, you're being so rude?"I turned around and met Daniella's displeased gaze.Kindness? What kind of kindness was that? It was nothing more than her wanting revenge for Jackson and forcing me to submit.I spread my arms wide, blocking them
