Chapter 3

Author: candy
A week before the ceremony, Chloe brought Ethan's sister-in-law, Vivian Clayton, home ahead of schedule.

Vivian's husband had died fighting at the border a few years ago. Shattered by grief, she'd lost her only pup soon after, and she'd been away receiving psychological treatment ever since.

Chloe said the whole family ought to be together for the ceremony. She even called Ethan specifically to tell him she'd do whatever she could to make Vivian's wishes come true. In my previous life, I'd felt genuinely sorry for her.

Ethan arranged for her to receive treatment at a healing center and accompanied her to the cemetery. I never once stood in his way.

But in the end, everyone's sympathy for her made them think I already had more than enough and should give in to her more often.

The first thing she took from me was a trip with Ethan. While sobbing, she said she was afraid to stay home alone.

The next was the nursery I'd decorated myself. She said the view outside reminded her of her old home, so Ethan asked me to move the nursery downstairs.

In the end, I couldn't even keep my own daughter. And yet, whenever I had a fever, Ethan would stay by my bedside. Whenever I cried, he would hold me and apologize.

But once it was all over, I was still expected to be understanding toward the person everyone considered more unfortunate than me. But at Vivian's welcome dinner this time, Chloe was the one sitting beside Ethan.

Adrian and I were merely guests. When Vivian walked in, Ethan stood up to pull out a chair for her.

The smile on Chloe's face turned smug. She warmly took Vivian's hand. "We're family now, so if you ever need anything, just say the word."

Vivian stared at her, her eyes slowly turning red. "Ethan told me you were a kind person. It seems he was right."

Chloe immediately glanced my way, as if that compliment had been meant specifically for me to hear.

I didn't meet her eyes. After dinner, Chloe swapped the wine in front of her for a glass of warm water, then took Ethan's hand and placed it on her belly.

"I had my checkup today. The healer says everything is fine."

Ethan leaned down to kiss her, his eyes filled with joy. Chloe leaned into his arms as she smiled in my direction.

"Oh, I haven't told you yet, Irene. I'm pregnant. Our pup simply can't wait to be by our side."

After saying that, she turned to Ethan and pouted. "It's a shame we won't be able to go on a hot air balloon ride for our honeymoon."

Ethan affectionately gave her cheek a gentle pinch. "If you want to go, we'll go once the pup is here."

She arched her brows at me, seemingly eager to flaunt how happy she was and catch even the slightest hint of disappointment or discomfort on my face.

But she got nothing. I simply gave her a faint smile and congratulated her.

Vivian's hand stilled on her teacup. "How lovely."

She spoke softly, as though lost in thought. Ethan handed her a tissue while quietly calling her name.

Chloe assumed she was only grieving the pup she'd lost, so she leaned in to comfort her. "Don't be sad. Once my pup is born, you can come see her whenever you like."

My napkin creased under my grip. I had said those exact words once too. As we headed back, Adrian didn't have his Beta start driving right away. "You barely ate anything back there. Do you want to go somewhere else to grab a bite?"

I shook my head, then nodded. Instead of laughing at me, he just asked what I felt like eating.

I thought about it for a long time but couldn't come up with anything. For years, the table had always been filled with Ethan's favorite dishes. Later, Vivian's favorites were added to the mix. I wasn't picky, so before long, I became the person whose preferences no one needed to check.

In the end, I pointed to a little restaurant on the corner. He sat with me while I finished a bowl of hot soup and some bread. Only then did he ask his Beta to drive us home.

The night before the ceremony, Chloe came to see me. She placed the earrings Ethan had given her on my vanity and asked what Adrian had given me.

I was putting away my flower-shop apron as I answered without looking up, "He had surgery today. Whether he can come tomorrow depends on how he's doing in the morning."

Chloe struggled to keep the grin off her face. "Irene, it's too late to regret your decision now."

I folded the apron neatly. "I don't regret it."

Then she suddenly said, "Stop staring at my mate from now on. The way you look at him might give people the wrong idea."

I looked up at her. She was already so desperate to guard her place that she couldn't even stand the thought of me remembering that I'd once held it.

I said, "You don't have to worry. I have no intention of swapping back."

Her smile faltered for a moment.

Chloe eventually asked to dissolve her mate bond with Ethan. Her terms were clear. She would raise their daughter herself, Ethan could visit, and Vivian would have no standing to decide anything on either of their behalf.Ethan refused at first, but after several rounds of talks, he finally agreed. Dissolving their mate bond was painful for both of them, so they spent several days recovering at the healing center.Mom told me all of this over the phone. Before the dissolution, she'd wanted me to persuade Chloe to put up with things a little longer. "How is she supposed to manage on her own with a pup to raise?""You can help her."Mom went quiet for a moment. "It's easy for you to say that now that your life is going so well."I was tying the final knot around a bouquet when I paused at her words. "Everyone needs help sometimes. When it's me who needs it, you can help me too."She didn't give me a response. I set the phone back on the table, waited a few seconds, and was the fir

Once the room had gone quiet, Chloe asked me, "Why did you help me?""Your daughter belongs with the mother who wants to care for her."She looked down at the pup. A long time passed before she spoke again. "But you could've just sat back and watched me make a fool of myself."I didn't say anything to that. Her gaze settled on my mark, and her voice grew quieter."You get to have such a good life with him. In my previous life, I begged him for ages, but he still refused to hold a ceremony or let me move into his bedroom.""Just because the two of you weren't right for each other doesn't mean you had the right to take over my life."She lifted her head, her eyes suddenly reddening. "I thought you were happy. Ethan took you everywhere with him. If anyone said anything to embarrass you, he always stepped in and shut them down.""So that's all you ever saw."I looked at the pup in her arms, my heart aching."You saw him put a necklace around my neck, but you never saw me beg him t

Less than a week after the ceremony, Mom called me late at night. Chloe had gone into labor early and had already been taken to the Royal Healing Center. When I arrived, Ethan was standing outside the delivery room, his shirt collar damp with sweat. Clutched in his hand was the ring Chloe had taken off.The moment he saw me, he hurried over, his voice tight with worry. "She's been in there a long time."For a fleeting moment, I was reminded of my past life, when he had waited outside the door in exactly the same way.His fear of losing me had been real, but so was the fact that he'd later asked me to hand over our daughter to Vivian.A healer came out to tell us that Chloe and the pup were both safe, but the pup needed to be monitored for a little longer. Ethan braced himself against the wall, letting out a long breath of relief. When Chloe woke up, the first thing she did was ask to see her daughter. Ethan placed a photo in front of her and kissed her sweat-dampened forehead. "A

After Adrian's final checkup, the healer assured us that Adrian's legs had fully healed and that he could return to normal life. Our marking ceremony was set for two weeks later. He booked an entire estate outside the city. The path from the greenhouse to the garden was carpeted with fresh flowers, and the band had been rehearsing since early afternoon. When Mom received the invitation, the first thing she asked was whether it had been Adrian's idea.I said, "We made the decision together."She looked at the two names printed side by side on the card and said nothing more. On the day of the ceremony, Adrian waited for me beneath a flower-covered arch.As soon as I reached the steps, he came to meet me. "This time, you won't have to walk alone."He took my hand and led me down the aisle. The guests rose from their seats as flashes went off on both sides.I noticed Chloe sitting in the front row, her belly heavy with her impending delivery. She was watching Adrian so intently that

Four months into our marriage, Chloe invited us over for dinner. Her baby bump was already noticeable. Ethan adjusted the cushion behind her back before placing the steak he'd cut up in front of her. When she asked about the nursery, his hands went still. "Vivian's already had someone get the room ready. Her side of the house is quieter, so you'll be able to sleep at night, too."Chloe set down her fork. "I already told you—our pup will stay in the room next to ours."Vivian gently gripped her napkin. "I only brought out the things I never got to use before. They don't have to be used.""I didn't ask about the things."Chloe turned to Ethan. "Last time you said to wait for the test results. And now you're telling me the room's already been prepared? Are you even hearing what I'm saying?"Ethan reached for her hand, but she pulled away. "Vivian means no harm. You haven't been sleeping well lately. Don't let this upset you all night again.""I can't sleep because you keep refusin

By the time Adrian was discharged, Chloe's honeymoon had ended too.She sent me a picture of herself at the beach, with Ethan behind her, his arms wrapped around her waist. "I heard you still haven't moved to his place. Make sure you ask the healer how often they'll be coming each day."After reading the message, I tucked my phone beneath the flower shop counter. Adrian's Beta was moving the last box of flowerpots.Instead of closing the shop, I only shifted my hours by half an hour. Our new home was a little farther away, so I needed to leave myself enough time to get back. That evening, Adrian showed me my room. Our bedrooms sat at opposite ends of the hallway, and outside my window stood a very tall cedar tree."Your key is on the table. The staff will always knock before entering."I picked up the key, its metal edge pressing into my palm. "Can I change the curtains?"He turned his head toward me. "Of course you can.""Can I bring home the flowers that don't sell?""Well,
