Chapter 4

Author: candy
On the day of the ceremony, Ethan arrived early to pick up Chloe. She came down the stairs in her white gown, and he reached out to steady her. With everyone cheering and playfully teasing him, he kissed her gently on the forehead.

Mom smiled so broadly that fine lines crinkled around her eyes. "Chloe sure is lucky."

When it was my turn to leave, only Adrian's Beta was waiting outside. The living room went quiet for a moment.

Dad handed my bouquet to me. His tone made his words sound less like comfort and more like a reminder. "You chose him yourself."

I took the bouquet. "I know."

Adrian had already called me the night before. His healers wouldn't let him leave the Royal Healing Center early, so he'd asked if I wanted to postpone the ceremony. And I'd agreed.

The hotel had reserved a private room for the family to have a meal. We'd just be having a meal that day, and the actual ceremony would take place after he was discharged.

However, my parents were embarrassed by the situation, so they never bothered to tell our relatives.

They would rather leave me standing here alone, weathering the guests' pitying looks, than admit that the man they disdained had asked what I wanted before making any decisions for me.

I asked the Beta to explain the situation to the guests, then gathered my dress and got into the car. Chloe called out to me from beside another car.

"Do you want to ride with us? It'll be better than being alone and feeling sorry for yourself."

I shook my head. When we arrived at the hotel, Ethan carried her out of the car himself, the skirt of her dress draped over his arm.

Camera flashes went off nonstop.

One of our relatives sighed. "They're both marrying Alphas, yet one is doted on, and the other can't even have a proper ceremony."

I checked my phone. Adrian asked if I could bring him a coffee from the cafe downstairs when I visited the healing center tomorrow. He'd already gotten permission from his healers.

Then he added, "If you have other plans tomorrow, another day is fine."

I replied, "See you tomorrow morning."

Chloe happened to walk past me right then and caught me smiling. She frowned slightly, then was swept away by the crowd into the bridal suite.

I was in the next room, setting down my bouquet, when I heard Mom call for me. "Come fasten Chloe's bracelet for her. I can't see the clasp."

Chloe extended her hand, making me stand beside her. She was checking her makeup in the mirror when she suddenly murmured, "I guess he's always this gentle when he takes care of someone."

Once I was done fastening the bracelet, I stepped away. Just then, there was a knock at the door.

Ethan walked in with Vivian, carrying a pale blue box in his arms. Chloe's eyes lit up. "There's another present?"

Ethan set the box before her. Inside was a pair of baby shoes.

They were tiny, with a little white wolf embroidered along the edge. I recognized those shoes.

In my previous life, they'd been on my daughter's feet. And the one who carried my pup out of that room had used them to dab away Vivian's tears.

Chloe picked them up with a smile. "Isn't it a little early to be preparing things like these?"

Vivian gently stroked the shoes. "I got them for my own pup a long time ago. I could never bring myself to give them away."

Chloe's movements faltered for a beat. Ethan took her hand, his voice as gentle as ever.

"Chloe, there's something I'd like to discuss with you before the ceremony. Last night, you said you were willing to treat Vivian like your own family. I really appreciate that."

Chloe glanced at Mom before nodding with a smile. "Of course."

Ethan gently rubbed his thumb over the ring on her finger. "Vivian wasn't getting any better with treatment before. It was only after meeting you that she finally started talking about her future."

He paused for a moment. "Once our first pup is born, could you let Vivian raise it?"

Chloe's smile froze. Mom rose to her feet as well.

Assuming she hadn't understood, Ethan explained patiently, "It's not that you won't be allowed to see the pup. We'll be living under the same roof, so you can visit anytime. We can always have a second and a third pup, but Vivian has nothing left."

Slowly, Chloe placed the shoes back in the box. I finally understood why, in my previous life, he'd waited until after I gave birth to my pup before making that request.

Back then, Vivian hadn't been living with us. She only finished her treatment and moved in after my daughter was born.

In this life, Chloe, desperate to please him, had brought Vivian home early and even promised to fulfill all her wishes. So everything was happening earlier this time.

Chloe instinctively looked up and met my eyes in the mirror. The smugness in her eyes slowly faded away.

Ethan was still holding her hand, asking, "You're okay with that, right?"

Chloe eventually asked to dissolve her mate bond with Ethan. Her terms were clear. She would raise their daughter herself, Ethan could visit, and Vivian would have no standing to decide anything on either of their behalf.Ethan refused at first, but after several rounds of talks, he finally agreed. Dissolving their mate bond was painful for both of them, so they spent several days recovering at the healing center.Mom told me all of this over the phone. Before the dissolution, she'd wanted me to persuade Chloe to put up with things a little longer. "How is she supposed to manage on her own with a pup to raise?""You can help her."Mom went quiet for a moment. "It's easy for you to say that now that your life is going so well."I was tying the final knot around a bouquet when I paused at her words. "Everyone needs help sometimes. When it's me who needs it, you can help me too."She didn't give me a response. I set the phone back on the table, waited a few seconds, and was the fir

Once the room had gone quiet, Chloe asked me, "Why did you help me?""Your daughter belongs with the mother who wants to care for her."She looked down at the pup. A long time passed before she spoke again. "But you could've just sat back and watched me make a fool of myself."I didn't say anything to that. Her gaze settled on my mark, and her voice grew quieter."You get to have such a good life with him. In my previous life, I begged him for ages, but he still refused to hold a ceremony or let me move into his bedroom.""Just because the two of you weren't right for each other doesn't mean you had the right to take over my life."She lifted her head, her eyes suddenly reddening. "I thought you were happy. Ethan took you everywhere with him. If anyone said anything to embarrass you, he always stepped in and shut them down.""So that's all you ever saw."I looked at the pup in her arms, my heart aching."You saw him put a necklace around my neck, but you never saw me beg him t

Less than a week after the ceremony, Mom called me late at night. Chloe had gone into labor early and had already been taken to the Royal Healing Center. When I arrived, Ethan was standing outside the delivery room, his shirt collar damp with sweat. Clutched in his hand was the ring Chloe had taken off.The moment he saw me, he hurried over, his voice tight with worry. "She's been in there a long time."For a fleeting moment, I was reminded of my past life, when he had waited outside the door in exactly the same way.His fear of losing me had been real, but so was the fact that he'd later asked me to hand over our daughter to Vivian.A healer came out to tell us that Chloe and the pup were both safe, but the pup needed to be monitored for a little longer. Ethan braced himself against the wall, letting out a long breath of relief. When Chloe woke up, the first thing she did was ask to see her daughter. Ethan placed a photo in front of her and kissed her sweat-dampened forehead. "A

After Adrian's final checkup, the healer assured us that Adrian's legs had fully healed and that he could return to normal life. Our marking ceremony was set for two weeks later. He booked an entire estate outside the city. The path from the greenhouse to the garden was carpeted with fresh flowers, and the band had been rehearsing since early afternoon. When Mom received the invitation, the first thing she asked was whether it had been Adrian's idea.I said, "We made the decision together."She looked at the two names printed side by side on the card and said nothing more. On the day of the ceremony, Adrian waited for me beneath a flower-covered arch.As soon as I reached the steps, he came to meet me. "This time, you won't have to walk alone."He took my hand and led me down the aisle. The guests rose from their seats as flashes went off on both sides.I noticed Chloe sitting in the front row, her belly heavy with her impending delivery. She was watching Adrian so intently that

Four months into our marriage, Chloe invited us over for dinner. Her baby bump was already noticeable. Ethan adjusted the cushion behind her back before placing the steak he'd cut up in front of her. When she asked about the nursery, his hands went still. "Vivian's already had someone get the room ready. Her side of the house is quieter, so you'll be able to sleep at night, too."Chloe set down her fork. "I already told you—our pup will stay in the room next to ours."Vivian gently gripped her napkin. "I only brought out the things I never got to use before. They don't have to be used.""I didn't ask about the things."Chloe turned to Ethan. "Last time you said to wait for the test results. And now you're telling me the room's already been prepared? Are you even hearing what I'm saying?"Ethan reached for her hand, but she pulled away. "Vivian means no harm. You haven't been sleeping well lately. Don't let this upset you all night again.""I can't sleep because you keep refusin

By the time Adrian was discharged, Chloe's honeymoon had ended too.She sent me a picture of herself at the beach, with Ethan behind her, his arms wrapped around her waist. "I heard you still haven't moved to his place. Make sure you ask the healer how often they'll be coming each day."After reading the message, I tucked my phone beneath the flower shop counter. Adrian's Beta was moving the last box of flowerpots.Instead of closing the shop, I only shifted my hours by half an hour. Our new home was a little farther away, so I needed to leave myself enough time to get back. That evening, Adrian showed me my room. Our bedrooms sat at opposite ends of the hallway, and outside my window stood a very tall cedar tree."Your key is on the table. The staff will always knock before entering."I picked up the key, its metal edge pressing into my palm. "Can I change the curtains?"He turned his head toward me. "Of course you can.""Can I bring home the flowers that don't sell?""Well,
