Matthew's POV

The doctor refused to give me my medical report on the day that I was diagnosed with cancer. I could make an educated guess that the results were grim when he insisted that I call my family to come to the hospital, especially since my stomach had been aching for some time.

I begged the doctor to tell me the results since I didn't really have any family left in the world anymore. However, he stubbornly shook his head and told me that someone else had to be present.

Standing in front of the hospital, I hesitated for a long time before I finally pulled out my phone and called my wife, Julia Snow.

The call rang for a long time before Julia finally picked up. I was about to speak when a feminine voice laced with impatience echoed from the receiver.

"You're really something else, Matthew Sawyer," Julia sneered. "You knew that Bradley's coming back today. That's why you're calling to check what I'm doing, aren't you?"

Julia's voice was a little distorted over the phone, but the contempt and annoyance in her tone were as clear as day.

I could understand her frustration. Her beloved childhood sweetheart, Bradley Holton, was returning to the country that day. I was ruining her mood by calling her. However, the doctor would only tell me the results with a family member present. She was the only one I could turn to.

I let out a hoarse laugh, explaining, "No, I'm not checking on what you're doing. Can you drop by the hospital? I—"

"Why should I go to the hospital? Are you actually going to die this time?" she demanded, letting out a laugh. "Is the Grim Reaper finally coming for you, Matthew? It's about time!"

My heart throbbed painfully upon hearing her words. Julia had insulted me with even crueler words in the past. Whenever we got into a huge fight, she would repeatedly curse me to die. However, it turned out that her words could still upset me at the very end.

I swallowed the bitter feeling in my throat and let out a dry laugh. "You can find out what's going on by asking the doctor yourself, Julia. Maybe the results are what you've been wishing for. After all, the doctor wouldn't refuse to give me my medical report if I wasn't diagnosed with cancer—"

Julia impatiently cut me off before I could finish my sentence. "Are you done yet, Matthew? Stop trying to use your underhanded tactics on me. Just let me know when to deal with your corpse when you're dead. Bradley's plane is about to land. I have no time to waste on you."

She then hung up after she was done speaking.

My entire body felt incredibly cold as I gripped my phone and listened to the beeping sounds that echoed from the receiver.

Julia was right. She didn't need to waste her time on me anymore since Bradley was back.

I had no choice but to shamelessly beg the doctor to tell me the results since Julia refused to come to the hospital.

"Just tell me the results, doctor. My parents have passed away, and my relationship with my wife has been on the rocks recently. I truly don't have any other family left in this world. Just tell me. It's fine. I can take it."

The bespectacled doctor shot me a sympathetic look before handing me the medical report with a sigh. "It's late-stage stomach cancer, Mr. Sawyer. The cancer cells have already spread throughout your body. You should eat and do whatever you want as soon as possible. Don't leave any regrets behind."

I left the hospital as the doctor offered his condolences to me. He informed me that since I had terminal cancer, I only had at most three months left to live.

Only three months left.

A tear rolled down my face as I looked up at the cloudy sky. I only realized that I had wasted the last five years of my life being in a love-hate relationship with Julia now that there was a countdown to the end of my life.

…

Night had fallen by the time I returned home. It was pitch-black in the house.

I sat alone in the living room for a long time after I turned on the lights. Julia didn't come home even though it was getting very late.

I knew that she would never come back again.

Matthew's POV"How could you be so foolish, Julia?" I asked. "You shouldn't believe everything that you hear."Julia covered her face with her hands and started sobbing uncontrollably.I sighed softly, saying, "You're truly the most foolish person I've ever met, Julia. Did you know that I'm friends with both Dahlia and her boyfriend? Bradley only gave you the first half of the video, didn't he? He didn't show you the second half of it."I was only pretending to be her boyfriend that day to chase off her superior who was harboring malicious intentions toward her. After her superior left in a huff, we even video-called her boyfriend, who was studying abroad at the time."So, why didn't you just ask me about what happened? Or perhaps, you just subconsciously trust Bradley more than me?"Julia looked as if she had been struck by lightning. The light in her eyes was slowly snuffed out as she stared at me."No… How could that be? Didn't you divorce me because you got together with Dah

Matthew's POVI had never seen Julia in so much despair, but all I wanted to do at that moment was laugh."Stop lying to yourself, Julia," I said. "I have late-stage terminal cancer. It's not some other illness. I won't get better.""You won't know if you don't try," Julia said. "I'm begging you, Matt. Please try out the treatment."I sighed. "It's too painful. I don't want to be treated anymore. Besides, Mom and Dad are waiting for me on the other side. I want to reunite with them."Julia let out an anguished wail. "But what about me? What will I do when you reunite with them?""You still have Bradley, don't you?" I retorted. "The two of you can openly be together after I'm gone. Get out of my sight, Julia."I closed my eyes, feeling exhausted. However, Julia refused to give up just yet. She grabbed my hand and said, "There's no Bradley, Matt. The one I love has always been you. I only hurt you because you hurt me first by fooling around with Dahlia."You have no idea how ha

  • She Hated Me Alive, Loved Me Dying   Chapter 10

Matthew's POV"Besides, we're already divorced," I said. "We don't have anything to do with each other anymore, so please refrain from poking your nose into my business. You should go. Your beloved Bradley is still waiting for you at home."I wasn't sure why, but my last sentence made Julia agitated. She leaped to her feet and screamed as if she had lost her mind. "Who's going to care about you if I don't? Don't tell me that you're waiting for Dahlia to take care of you?"She's not even making the effort to visit you even though you're sick. Why are you still so hung up on her? Don't you know that she got married to someone else a few days ago?"I was utterly stunned by Julia's words. What did our current situation have anything to do with Dahlia Baxton?Tears suddenly spilled down Julia's face as I stayed silent. "You said that I'm the one in the wrong in our marriage, but when have you ever been loyal to me, Matthew? You deserve to die, after all."She didn't spare me another g

Matthew's POVSurprisingly, Julia didn't lose her temper this time when she heard my words, even though she definitely would have in the past. Instead, she bit her lip as tears welled up in her eyes."I just want to celebrate the New Year with you, Matt," she said.It had been a long time since she called me that. It was so upsetting that it sent a chill down my spine. My gaze turned even colder as I looked at her and said, "Don't call me that. You should go back to Brad now. Get out."I grabbed Julia's sleeve and tried to push her out of my room, but instead, she gripped the door handle and refused to let go. "Why didn't you tell me that you were sick, Matt?" she asked.I was briefly stunned and nearly burst out laughing. "What does that have to do with you? There's no need for you to concern yourself with my business."I forcefully peeled her hand off the door handle and slammed the door in her face.…I couldn't sleep again that night. The scent of cookies that permeated m

Matthew's POV"You… What are you doing here?" Julia asked.I placed the mirror down and lay on the bed. "Can't you see? I'm hospitalized. What are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be spending time with your beloved Bradley?"They had gone through countless trials and tribulations to be together. I had assumed they would get married immediately. So, what was Julia doing here? Her presence was incredibly irritating.Julia's expression darkened. "Stop dragging Bradley into everything. Why are you staying in the hospital? Why are you alone? Why do you look like that? Don't tell me that you were actually diagnosed with cancer? Is the Grim Reaper finally coming for you?"She laughed, then continued, "It's about time!"My heart throbbed painfully. It turned out that it was still so easy for her to hurt me.I smiled and said, "That's right. I'm going to die soon. Are you satisfied now? Get out of my sight. I don't want to have to look at your face before I leave this world."Juli

  • She Hated Me Alive, Loved Me Dying   Chapter 7

Matthew's POVJulia worked quickly and delivered the divorce agreement the next day.As I looked through the terms, I couldn't help but feel she had been quite generous; she was willing to split half the assets with me. She was also buying my shares at the current market's highest price.I silently thanked her on behalf of the kids in the orphanage. After I signed on the dotted line, the two of us went to the courthouse to finalize the divorce. We finally no longer had any ties to each other after the staff member stamped the document.Bradley, who had been waiting excitedly for Julia outside the courthouse, approached us as we walked out of the building. They got into a car together, started the engine, and quickly left the area.As I watched their car disappear into the distance, I suddenly recalled an incident that happened not long after we got married, when our relationship was at its best.I had seen Julia off on a business trip. When we got to the airport, she held my ha
