Chapter 2

Author: Anonymous
Matthew's POV

I saw Julia in the photo Bradley had just posted on his social media account. She was wearing a radiant smile as she sat next to him and cut steak for him.

Although we had been married for five years, I had no idea that someone as proud as she was would be willing to cut steak for someone else. She had never done this for me, even when our relationship was harmonious, since she was severely allergic to seafood.

And yet, she was willing to risk having an allergic reaction just to do for Bradley.

Julia's behavior made it too easy to tell whether she loved or didn't love a person.

I stared at the photo for a long time before finally deciding to let her go. I didn't want her name to be carved on my tombstone since she didn't care about me.

Our marriage had been a marriage of convenience. The Snow family was facing a severe financial crisis and desperately needed help. Julia and her mother had shown up at our doorstep and explained that they were willing to marry our families together.

I had liked Julia since I was a child, so I immediately agreed when I heard that she was willing to marry me.

Our first year of marriage was good. We even had a baby together. However, everything changed during our wedding anniversary when Julia was three months along.

I waited for her at home all day that day. But she didn't come back until late that night, with cold air around her and her face furious and anguished.

I had never seen Julia like that. She swept the red wine, fresh flowers, and steak that I had prepared to the floor before hysterically shouting, "How could you be so shameless? I'm already with you and was willing to have a child with you. Why did you force Bradley to leave the country? How could you treat me like this? How could you treat him like that?"

I shook my head with a bewildered expression as I stared at her distressed face. "What are you talking about, Julia? I don't understand."

My words agitated Julia even more. She rushed toward me and grabbed a fistful of my collar with bloodshot eyes.

"Drop the act, Matthew. The Sawyer family stood on the sidelines and did nothing when the Snow family was facing a financial crisis because you wanted to force me to abandon Bradley and marry you, right?"

My heart ached as I took in the hatred in Julia's eyes. Suppressing the cold sensation that was spreading through my chest, I asked, "So, the person you love is Bradley, Julia?"

Julia bit her lip harshly as she nodded. "That's right. I love Bradley. I love him the most."

It turned out that the person who Julia truly loved was Bradley. My ardent love for her slowly died when I heard her words.

Ignoring the way my eyes were stinging, I asked, "So, you've never loved me. Am I right?"

"Love you?" Julia asked with a scoff. "I want nothing more than for you to drop dead."

Matthew's POV"How could you be so foolish, Julia?" I asked. "You shouldn't believe everything that you hear."Julia covered her face with her hands and started sobbing uncontrollably.I sighed softly, saying, "You're truly the most foolish person I've ever met, Julia. Did you know that I'm friends with both Dahlia and her boyfriend? Bradley only gave you the first half of the video, didn't he? He didn't show you the second half of it."I was only pretending to be her boyfriend that day to chase off her superior who was harboring malicious intentions toward her. After her superior left in a huff, we even video-called her boyfriend, who was studying abroad at the time."So, why didn't you just ask me about what happened? Or perhaps, you just subconsciously trust Bradley more than me?"Julia looked as if she had been struck by lightning. The light in her eyes was slowly snuffed out as she stared at me."No… How could that be? Didn't you divorce me because you got together with Dah

Matthew's POVI had never seen Julia in so much despair, but all I wanted to do at that moment was laugh."Stop lying to yourself, Julia," I said. "I have late-stage terminal cancer. It's not some other illness. I won't get better.""You won't know if you don't try," Julia said. "I'm begging you, Matt. Please try out the treatment."I sighed. "It's too painful. I don't want to be treated anymore. Besides, Mom and Dad are waiting for me on the other side. I want to reunite with them."Julia let out an anguished wail. "But what about me? What will I do when you reunite with them?""You still have Bradley, don't you?" I retorted. "The two of you can openly be together after I'm gone. Get out of my sight, Julia."I closed my eyes, feeling exhausted. However, Julia refused to give up just yet. She grabbed my hand and said, "There's no Bradley, Matt. The one I love has always been you. I only hurt you because you hurt me first by fooling around with Dahlia."You have no idea how ha

Matthew's POV"Besides, we're already divorced," I said. "We don't have anything to do with each other anymore, so please refrain from poking your nose into my business. You should go. Your beloved Bradley is still waiting for you at home."I wasn't sure why, but my last sentence made Julia agitated. She leaped to her feet and screamed as if she had lost her mind. "Who's going to care about you if I don't? Don't tell me that you're waiting for Dahlia to take care of you?"She's not even making the effort to visit you even though you're sick. Why are you still so hung up on her? Don't you know that she got married to someone else a few days ago?"I was utterly stunned by Julia's words. What did our current situation have anything to do with Dahlia Baxton?Tears suddenly spilled down Julia's face as I stayed silent. "You said that I'm the one in the wrong in our marriage, but when have you ever been loyal to me, Matthew? You deserve to die, after all."She didn't spare me another g

Matthew's POVSurprisingly, Julia didn't lose her temper this time when she heard my words, even though she definitely would have in the past. Instead, she bit her lip as tears welled up in her eyes."I just want to celebrate the New Year with you, Matt," she said.It had been a long time since she called me that. It was so upsetting that it sent a chill down my spine. My gaze turned even colder as I looked at her and said, "Don't call me that. You should go back to Brad now. Get out."I grabbed Julia's sleeve and tried to push her out of my room, but instead, she gripped the door handle and refused to let go. "Why didn't you tell me that you were sick, Matt?" she asked.I was briefly stunned and nearly burst out laughing. "What does that have to do with you? There's no need for you to concern yourself with my business."I forcefully peeled her hand off the door handle and slammed the door in her face.…I couldn't sleep again that night. The scent of cookies that permeated m

Matthew's POV"You… What are you doing here?" Julia asked.I placed the mirror down and lay on the bed. "Can't you see? I'm hospitalized. What are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be spending time with your beloved Bradley?"They had gone through countless trials and tribulations to be together. I had assumed they would get married immediately. So, what was Julia doing here? Her presence was incredibly irritating.Julia's expression darkened. "Stop dragging Bradley into everything. Why are you staying in the hospital? Why are you alone? Why do you look like that? Don't tell me that you were actually diagnosed with cancer? Is the Grim Reaper finally coming for you?"She laughed, then continued, "It's about time!"My heart throbbed painfully. It turned out that it was still so easy for her to hurt me.I smiled and said, "That's right. I'm going to die soon. Are you satisfied now? Get out of my sight. I don't want to have to look at your face before I leave this world."Juli

Matthew's POVJulia worked quickly and delivered the divorce agreement the next day.As I looked through the terms, I couldn't help but feel she had been quite generous; she was willing to split half the assets with me. She was also buying my shares at the current market's highest price.I silently thanked her on behalf of the kids in the orphanage. After I signed on the dotted line, the two of us went to the courthouse to finalize the divorce. We finally no longer had any ties to each other after the staff member stamped the document.Bradley, who had been waiting excitedly for Julia outside the courthouse, approached us as we walked out of the building. They got into a car together, started the engine, and quickly left the area.As I watched their car disappear into the distance, I suddenly recalled an incident that happened not long after we got married, when our relationship was at its best.I had seen Julia off on a business trip. When we got to the airport, she held my ha
