Chapter 3

Author: Anonymous
Matthew's POV

"Do you really think that someone as two-faced as you deserves my affection?" Julia sneered.

I felt as if a hole had been punched in my heart, allowing freezing winds to billow in. I stared at her in disbelief, hoping to find a trace of anything that suggested she was lying. I refused to believe the love we'd shared for the past year had been completely fake.

However, I could only make out discontent and deep hatred on her face, which told me she truly loathed me with every fiber of her being.

But it seemed that Julia wasn't done tormenting me yet. A cruel smile stretched across her lips as she asked, "Aren't you curious about why I came home so late tonight?"

I didn't understand what she meant, so I nodded, and her smile widened.

"I came home so late tonight because I got an abortion. Someone like you doesn't deserve to have a child with me, Matthew."

I felt as if I had been struck by lightning. I couldn't believe that she hated me so much that she was willing to end the life of our child as well. How could she do that?

A long time passed before I said in a shaky voice, "I've never done anything to Bradley. Mom and Dad wouldn't do anything either. How could you make such an arbitrary decision and kill our child? Don't you have any faith in me?"

I loved Julia, but I wasn't despicable enough to stab someone else in the back just for a woman's sake. If she had told me from the start that she loved someone else, I never would have agreed to get together with her.

A real man would never stoop so low and would be willing to let go if the other party wasn't interested. Dad had drilled these principles into me since I was a child.

However, Julia refused to listen to my explanations. She cruelly shoved me aside and left without sparing me a single glance.

Our relationship became strained from that day on.

I decided to divorce Julia, but I had a few things to take care of first.

…

I hailed a cab and made my way to the company the next morning. They were going to announce the new head of the planning department that day. I didn't want to miss it.

Julia and I established the company together after we got married. After our families became related through marriage, our two companies slowly merged into one too.

Julia was more career-driven than I was, so I let her become CEO even though we had the same number of shares. Besides, I liked planning, which prompted me to start as a regular employee in the planning department.

The previous head of the planning department retired a few days ago. Everyone was certain that the new head would be me and no one else. I felt the same way.

To prove that I wasn't just a useless second-generation heir to Julia, I sacrificed countless nights of sleep and endured countless hardships. There was once when I threw up blood because I drank too much alcohol while entertaining a client to secure a contract.

My stomach likely started deteriorating then. It was also why I was confident that I would be named the new head of the department.

I ran into one of my colleagues in the hallway. He smiled brightly and said, "Don't forget to treat me to a nice meal when you get your promotion later, Matthew."

"Maybe they won't promote me," I replied with a faint smile.

He wrapped an arm around my shoulders and exclaimed, "It's definitely going to be you! Everyone knows how much you've contributed to the planning department in the last few years."

Julia was already inside when we entered the meeting room. The corners of her lips curled up into a mocking smile when she spotted me.

I knew that she was ridiculing me. She still believed that I was lying when I called her to ask her to drop by the hospital because I was diagnosed with cancer the day before.

I looked down and didn't explain myself. I didn't have many days left to live. I didn't want to waste what little time I had left on her.

It didn't take long for everyone to enter the meeting room. Julia cleared her throat, then explained the purpose of the meeting. As everyone waited with bated breath for her to call my name, I heard a different but familiar name slip through her lips instead.

"Bradley Holton."

A few seconds later, a familiar figure entered the meeting room.

Matthew's POV"How could you be so foolish, Julia?" I asked. "You shouldn't believe everything that you hear."Julia covered her face with her hands and started sobbing uncontrollably.I sighed softly, saying, "You're truly the most foolish person I've ever met, Julia. Did you know that I'm friends with both Dahlia and her boyfriend? Bradley only gave you the first half of the video, didn't he? He didn't show you the second half of it."I was only pretending to be her boyfriend that day to chase off her superior who was harboring malicious intentions toward her. After her superior left in a huff, we even video-called her boyfriend, who was studying abroad at the time."So, why didn't you just ask me about what happened? Or perhaps, you just subconsciously trust Bradley more than me?"Julia looked as if she had been struck by lightning. The light in her eyes was slowly snuffed out as she stared at me."No… How could that be? Didn't you divorce me because you got together with Dah

Matthew's POVI had never seen Julia in so much despair, but all I wanted to do at that moment was laugh."Stop lying to yourself, Julia," I said. "I have late-stage terminal cancer. It's not some other illness. I won't get better.""You won't know if you don't try," Julia said. "I'm begging you, Matt. Please try out the treatment."I sighed. "It's too painful. I don't want to be treated anymore. Besides, Mom and Dad are waiting for me on the other side. I want to reunite with them."Julia let out an anguished wail. "But what about me? What will I do when you reunite with them?""You still have Bradley, don't you?" I retorted. "The two of you can openly be together after I'm gone. Get out of my sight, Julia."I closed my eyes, feeling exhausted. However, Julia refused to give up just yet. She grabbed my hand and said, "There's no Bradley, Matt. The one I love has always been you. I only hurt you because you hurt me first by fooling around with Dahlia."You have no idea how ha

  • She Hated Me Alive, Loved Me Dying   Chapter 10

Matthew's POV"Besides, we're already divorced," I said. "We don't have anything to do with each other anymore, so please refrain from poking your nose into my business. You should go. Your beloved Bradley is still waiting for you at home."I wasn't sure why, but my last sentence made Julia agitated. She leaped to her feet and screamed as if she had lost her mind. "Who's going to care about you if I don't? Don't tell me that you're waiting for Dahlia to take care of you?"She's not even making the effort to visit you even though you're sick. Why are you still so hung up on her? Don't you know that she got married to someone else a few days ago?"I was utterly stunned by Julia's words. What did our current situation have anything to do with Dahlia Baxton?Tears suddenly spilled down Julia's face as I stayed silent. "You said that I'm the one in the wrong in our marriage, but when have you ever been loyal to me, Matthew? You deserve to die, after all."She didn't spare me another g

  • She Hated Me Alive, Loved Me Dying   Chapter 9

Matthew's POVSurprisingly, Julia didn't lose her temper this time when she heard my words, even though she definitely would have in the past. Instead, she bit her lip as tears welled up in her eyes."I just want to celebrate the New Year with you, Matt," she said.It had been a long time since she called me that. It was so upsetting that it sent a chill down my spine. My gaze turned even colder as I looked at her and said, "Don't call me that. You should go back to Brad now. Get out."I grabbed Julia's sleeve and tried to push her out of my room, but instead, she gripped the door handle and refused to let go. "Why didn't you tell me that you were sick, Matt?" she asked.I was briefly stunned and nearly burst out laughing. "What does that have to do with you? There's no need for you to concern yourself with my business."I forcefully peeled her hand off the door handle and slammed the door in her face.…I couldn't sleep again that night. The scent of cookies that permeated m

Matthew's POV"You… What are you doing here?" Julia asked.I placed the mirror down and lay on the bed. "Can't you see? I'm hospitalized. What are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be spending time with your beloved Bradley?"They had gone through countless trials and tribulations to be together. I had assumed they would get married immediately. So, what was Julia doing here? Her presence was incredibly irritating.Julia's expression darkened. "Stop dragging Bradley into everything. Why are you staying in the hospital? Why are you alone? Why do you look like that? Don't tell me that you were actually diagnosed with cancer? Is the Grim Reaper finally coming for you?"She laughed, then continued, "It's about time!"My heart throbbed painfully. It turned out that it was still so easy for her to hurt me.I smiled and said, "That's right. I'm going to die soon. Are you satisfied now? Get out of my sight. I don't want to have to look at your face before I leave this world."Juli

  • She Hated Me Alive, Loved Me Dying   Chapter 7

Matthew's POVJulia worked quickly and delivered the divorce agreement the next day.As I looked through the terms, I couldn't help but feel she had been quite generous; she was willing to split half the assets with me. She was also buying my shares at the current market's highest price.I silently thanked her on behalf of the kids in the orphanage. After I signed on the dotted line, the two of us went to the courthouse to finalize the divorce. We finally no longer had any ties to each other after the staff member stamped the document.Bradley, who had been waiting excitedly for Julia outside the courthouse, approached us as we walked out of the building. They got into a car together, started the engine, and quickly left the area.As I watched their car disappear into the distance, I suddenly recalled an incident that happened not long after we got married, when our relationship was at its best.I had seen Julia off on a business trip. When we got to the airport, she held my ha
