Chapter 4

Author: Anonymous
Matthew's POV

Although it had been five years since I last saw Bradley, he was still as handsome as ever.

Julia ushered him to stand in front of the crowd before introducing him. "Bradley is a Magnolia League graduate who just returned to the country from abroad. He will be the new head of the planning department."

Everyone subconsciously glanced at me, while I ignored their gazes and just stared at the stage.

Julia and Bradley were very close. They looked like a match made in heaven as they stood side by side.

The knot in my heart loosened as I suddenly realized how pointless everything was.

Noticing my gaze on her, Julia asked coldly, "What's wrong? Do you have something to say about Bradley being the new head of the department, Matthew?"

Her words once again made me the focus of everyone's attention. A troubled and bitter expression flickered across my face. In the end, I fixed a faint smile on my face and said, "Not at all. Welcome, Mr. Holton."

I started clapping, prompting everyone to join in.

Bradley smiled brightly as he looked me in the eyes.

…

I returned to my workstation and turned on my computer to finish off what little work I had left. I had to drop by the hospital early in the morning, so I didn't have enough time to have breakfast, causing my stomach to throb painfully.

One of my colleagues complained angrily about what had happened while holding his mug. "I'm so mad. How could she just let some stranger become the new head of the department?

"So what if he came back from abroad? Does Ms. Snow even know how much you've contributed to the planning department? You were nearly hospitalized a few times because you had to drink so much. You don't deserve this type of treatment, Matthew."

Powering through the pain, I typed the last few words into the computer before saying lightly, "It's not about what I deserve. Ms. Snow just thinks that Bradley's a better fit than me to expand the company in the long run."

"Matthew—"

My colleague was about to voice another complaint when my phone started ringing. Julia's name was flashing on the screen. Her furious voice echoed from the receiver when I picked up.

"Come to the CEO's office now, Matthew."

I looked down, suppressing the turbulent emotions in my eyes. "Alright."

I noticed Bradley was in Julia's office when I opened the door. She looked completely unbothered as he boldly stood behind her chair and watched her work.

However, I clearly remembered her chewing me out when I accidentally stood behind her chair while she was working. She said that she wasn't used to people standing behind her while she worked, but it seemed that I was the only one she wasn't used to.

"The head of the planning department rightfully belongs to Bradley, Matthew. He's an outstanding graduate from a Magnolia League university. He's much better than a second-generation heir like you who only graduated from a regular, second-rate university.

"You could have openly voiced your complaints during the meeting just now. I gave you a chance, but you didn't say a thing. Instead, you chose to badmouth him behind his back. As expected, you're just as despicable as you were in the past. You only know how to stab people in the back."

Julia gritted her teeth as she spoke. Meanwhile, Bradley shot me a mocking smile as he stood behind her.

I knew he was ridiculing me, since I still couldn't win Julia's favor even though we had been married for five years. He was right. I should just abandon her since I couldn't win.

"I want you to make a public apology to Bradley in the company group chat, Matthew," Julia said. "I want you to explain that you weren't promoted to the head of the department because you were unqualified for the position, and that it has nothing to do with Bradley."

I laughed. "I do have to apologize to Bradley, but not because of the position. I worked just as hard as you for the company for the past few years, Julia. The position should rightfully belong to me."

"Then, why did you say that you have to apologize to Bradley if you're so confident?" Julia asked, scoffing.

The corners of my lips curled up into a faint smile. "Because I indeed owe him."

Matthew's POV"How could you be so foolish, Julia?" I asked. "You shouldn't believe everything that you hear."Julia covered her face with her hands and started sobbing uncontrollably.I sighed softly, saying, "You're truly the most foolish person I've ever met, Julia. Did you know that I'm friends with both Dahlia and her boyfriend? Bradley only gave you the first half of the video, didn't he? He didn't show you the second half of it."I was only pretending to be her boyfriend that day to chase off her superior who was harboring malicious intentions toward her. After her superior left in a huff, we even video-called her boyfriend, who was studying abroad at the time."So, why didn't you just ask me about what happened? Or perhaps, you just subconsciously trust Bradley more than me?"Julia looked as if she had been struck by lightning. The light in her eyes was slowly snuffed out as she stared at me."No… How could that be? Didn't you divorce me because you got together with Dah

Matthew's POVI had never seen Julia in so much despair, but all I wanted to do at that moment was laugh."Stop lying to yourself, Julia," I said. "I have late-stage terminal cancer. It's not some other illness. I won't get better.""You won't know if you don't try," Julia said. "I'm begging you, Matt. Please try out the treatment."I sighed. "It's too painful. I don't want to be treated anymore. Besides, Mom and Dad are waiting for me on the other side. I want to reunite with them."Julia let out an anguished wail. "But what about me? What will I do when you reunite with them?""You still have Bradley, don't you?" I retorted. "The two of you can openly be together after I'm gone. Get out of my sight, Julia."I closed my eyes, feeling exhausted. However, Julia refused to give up just yet. She grabbed my hand and said, "There's no Bradley, Matt. The one I love has always been you. I only hurt you because you hurt me first by fooling around with Dahlia."You have no idea how ha

Matthew's POV"Besides, we're already divorced," I said. "We don't have anything to do with each other anymore, so please refrain from poking your nose into my business. You should go. Your beloved Bradley is still waiting for you at home."I wasn't sure why, but my last sentence made Julia agitated. She leaped to her feet and screamed as if she had lost her mind. "Who's going to care about you if I don't? Don't tell me that you're waiting for Dahlia to take care of you?"She's not even making the effort to visit you even though you're sick. Why are you still so hung up on her? Don't you know that she got married to someone else a few days ago?"I was utterly stunned by Julia's words. What did our current situation have anything to do with Dahlia Baxton?Tears suddenly spilled down Julia's face as I stayed silent. "You said that I'm the one in the wrong in our marriage, but when have you ever been loyal to me, Matthew? You deserve to die, after all."She didn't spare me another g

Matthew's POVSurprisingly, Julia didn't lose her temper this time when she heard my words, even though she definitely would have in the past. Instead, she bit her lip as tears welled up in her eyes."I just want to celebrate the New Year with you, Matt," she said.It had been a long time since she called me that. It was so upsetting that it sent a chill down my spine. My gaze turned even colder as I looked at her and said, "Don't call me that. You should go back to Brad now. Get out."I grabbed Julia's sleeve and tried to push her out of my room, but instead, she gripped the door handle and refused to let go. "Why didn't you tell me that you were sick, Matt?" she asked.I was briefly stunned and nearly burst out laughing. "What does that have to do with you? There's no need for you to concern yourself with my business."I forcefully peeled her hand off the door handle and slammed the door in her face.…I couldn't sleep again that night. The scent of cookies that permeated m

Matthew's POV"You… What are you doing here?" Julia asked.I placed the mirror down and lay on the bed. "Can't you see? I'm hospitalized. What are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be spending time with your beloved Bradley?"They had gone through countless trials and tribulations to be together. I had assumed they would get married immediately. So, what was Julia doing here? Her presence was incredibly irritating.Julia's expression darkened. "Stop dragging Bradley into everything. Why are you staying in the hospital? Why are you alone? Why do you look like that? Don't tell me that you were actually diagnosed with cancer? Is the Grim Reaper finally coming for you?"She laughed, then continued, "It's about time!"My heart throbbed painfully. It turned out that it was still so easy for her to hurt me.I smiled and said, "That's right. I'm going to die soon. Are you satisfied now? Get out of my sight. I don't want to have to look at your face before I leave this world."Juli

  • She Hated Me Alive, Loved Me Dying   Chapter 7

Matthew's POVJulia worked quickly and delivered the divorce agreement the next day.As I looked through the terms, I couldn't help but feel she had been quite generous; she was willing to split half the assets with me. She was also buying my shares at the current market's highest price.I silently thanked her on behalf of the kids in the orphanage. After I signed on the dotted line, the two of us went to the courthouse to finalize the divorce. We finally no longer had any ties to each other after the staff member stamped the document.Bradley, who had been waiting excitedly for Julia outside the courthouse, approached us as we walked out of the building. They got into a car together, started the engine, and quickly left the area.As I watched their car disappear into the distance, I suddenly recalled an incident that happened not long after we got married, when our relationship was at its best.I had seen Julia off on a business trip. When we got to the airport, she held my ha
