Chapter 4 On the Brink

Autor: Goodtale
I was kept under house arrest. The door was locked, and the window was slightly cracked open.

I went on a hunger strike. The first day, the food the nurses sent was returned without even getting touched.

Lawrence came the second day, holding a bowl of soup.

He sat on the edge of my bed and scooped a spoonful. He blew on it and tried to feed me. "Have a sip."

I turned my head away. He grabbed my chin and force-fed me the soup. I choked until I coughed, and tears drenched my blanket. "Why must you kill him?" I glowered at Lawrence, my throat burning. "Tell me, why!"

He put the bowl down, wiped the soup off my lips with a tissue. He was gentle. "Because he'll be born incredibly unhealthy, and no responsible father will bring to the world a life that's destined for suffering."

I cried until I was shivering. "How can you say that he's unhealthy? Do you know what he means to me? I have a frail body, and I took three years of medication as well as hundreds of injections just to have him! I nearly got myself killed!"

Lawrence's fingers froze for a moment.

I gripped his wrist tightly, and my nails nearly dug into his flesh. "Even if he is unhealthy, both our families are rich enough to raise him! We have money, and we have the manpower! Tell me, what are you really afraid of?"

He looked at me, and his lips thinned into a line. Something flickered in his eyes, though only barely. He was about to say something, but someone opened the door.

Tiffany was outside, her coat stained with blood. "There's a C-section in the ER, Lawrence. The patient is bleeding excessively, and the chief wants you there."

Lawrence stood up and shoved the bowl into my hand. "We'll talk when I come back."

He left in a hurry and didn't turn back. The door closed, but Tiffany didn't leave. She slowly came in and locked the door.

"You're just prolonging your suffering, Melody."

I shrank on my bed and looked at her cautiously. She smiled and took out a syringe from her pocket, then took the cap off.

"What are you doing?"

"It's alright." She held my arm down with force greater than I thought. "It's oxytocin. I'll release you from the pain."

I thrashed and struggled, but her other hand was already holding my leg down.

The moment the needle pricked me, I screamed, "I dare you, Tiffany!"

A short while later, my stomach began to contract violently, and the pain turned everything around me white.

Tiffany pressed the bell and told the swarming nurses, "The patient is having an emergency. Prepare for the procedure."

I was taken out of the bed and pushed into the operating room. As the blinding light shone, I heard Tiffany's voice speak overhead, "Prepare the anesthesia."

I wanted to scream and struggle, but my limbs felt like lead, and even my tongue was starting to go numb. I was awake, more than ever.

I watched Tiffany take the surgeon's position. I watched the nurses huddle around me, and I watched them take their positions, following Tiffany's orders.

No one thought this was wrong. No one looked at me. Tiffany leaned down, the eyes above her mask curled in glee. She leaned in close enough to whisper to my ear, "That baby's not unhealthy at all."

My pupils shrank.

"I changed the report. I want to take away your baby and your uterus. You'll never have children of your own."

Every single word seared my mind.

"Lawrence agreed to it. He told me to do this for you. Do you know why?" She patted my cheek. "That's because I'm pregnant."

My mind was blank. She slid on surgical gloves and picked up the scalpel, then she tilted her head. "Take a nap, Melody."

The scalpel glinted coldly, and it slowly moved toward my stomach. I couldn't even move a finger, yet tears kept streaming down my cheek.

Just then, someone kicked the door open. "Stop right there!"

Lawrence still came in the end. He stood below my apartment, wearing an old, gray jacket, and he was barely thicker than a stick. He didn't come upstairs, but he looked at my balcony the whole afternoon. I stepped back from the window and pulled the curtains shut.He had someone send me a letter. I didn't open it. The second came, and then the third, but I sent them back. He stopped writing letters and asked someone to give me a message. "Name the child."I stood in the kitchen, holding a ladle, and I froze. That night, I took out the ultrasound photo and wrote a name on the back page. Nathaniel Ginger. That was the name I gave it. He'd take my name.I tucked the photo deeply in my drawer and let no one see it.Tiffany went insane in prison. It started out as crying episodes, then she cried the whole night, and eventually, it got to her cellmates. The cops brought Tiffany into the courthouse during the day of the trial. She had lost a lot of weight. Her cheekbones jutted out, and her eyes were sunken. Her long, silky hair was cut short and pushed behind her ears haphazardly.A yellow shirt hung on her body, looking oversized. Her wrist was covered in bandages, covering up the marks of her self-harm. She saw me the moment she came in, and her eyes were filled with gleaming venom, just like a viper's.I didn't avert my gaze. The prosecutor's evidence was cruelly, totally complete. The snapshots of the switched reports, the transaction history, the fingerprints on the syringe, and the voice recording were laid out.Tiffany's legal team tried to lessen her sentence, citing extreme actions due to romantic entanglement, but the prosecutor shut them down."Her action was premeditated, planned, and she had accomplices. Two IT guys doctored the evidence after Tiffany bribed them with eighty grand. That oxytocin was something she took from the drug storage privately, and the dosage was far higher than the safe levels. That caused my premature labor and excessive bleeding. The day her arrest was ratified, reporters from dozens of outlets surrounded the hospital's entrance. The Department of Health held a press conference along with the hospital and told the public about the investigation results. The Internet cursed Tiffany to high hells and back the same afternoon her case was reported. He stared at the papers with bloodshot eyes, then slowly took them and signed his name, but every stroke took everything he had. Then, he raised his head and asked, "Was the baby really healthy?"I said nothing, whereas Bernard spoke up. "The report's right here. Want to take a look?"Lawrence didn't. He closed his eyes and knocked his forehead against the edge of the bed. It let out a dull thud. "I'm sorry."I said nothing. When Tiffany was taken by the cops, her shouts echoed across the corridor. She called out for Lawrence.Lawrence went out and stood at the entrance, watching two lady officers dragging her out by the arms."I love you, Lawrence, I really do! I've done so much for you! You can't just do nothing!"He looked at her with ice-cold ferocity. "You killed my son," he said, his voice flat. "You can never clear that debt."Something choked Tiffany, and she stopped shouting, but she kept crying until her snot was covering her face.Lawrence left and didn't turn back

Tiffany stepped backward until her back was leaning against the wall. "Lawrence, I…""Tell me if you switched out the report!" Lawrence roared enough for the corridor to shake. He grabbed Tiffany by the collar and lifted her off the ground. "I trusted you! You told me the baby was unhealthy! You told me it was better for Melody if he was aborted! I signed the papers! I shoved her into it myself, and now you tell me the baby was healthy all this while?"She was wheezing from crying too hard. "I did it for you! I don't want you to have any children! I can't take it every time I see you treating her like a queen! I've loved you for so many years! She came after me, so why did she get to bear your child while I don't? What part of her is better than me?"Lawrence's grip loosened, and he staggered backward. Then, he remembered something and charged at me. Bernard blocked him, and he flew into a rage. "Out of my way!"I closed my eyes, refusing to look at him. Bernard told his guards

It was Bernard Foster. He stood at the entrance dressed in a black suit, his expression was cold. Behind him were the hospital's internal oversight team, the enforcers from the Department of Health, and a dozen guards. Everyone had recording devices on them.Tiffany's scalpel stopped inches away from my belly. "What are you doing?" She stepped backward, scalpel still in hand. "This is the operating room! You can't come in here!"Bernard didn't look at her. His eyes went across the crowd and fell on me. I was half-unconscious, my lips were white as paper, and blood covered my whole body. He strode into the operating room and shoved a nurse out of his way, then slammed a document on the table. "Melody's authorization papers, and it's notarized. I'll handle all her medical affairs." His voice wasn't loud, but it silenced everyone. "I demand a change of medical team. Everyone here must leave."Lawrence squeezed in, his coat still drenched in sweat. His expression changed when he s
