Chapter 2

Author: Snowy
The next day, I headed to the bank to review the transaction history for the joint account that Violet and I shared.

Every month, I'd deposit 3500 dollars into this account, while Violet would deposit a thousand dollars. We've been married for two years now. So, by all accounts, we should've had about 110 thousand dollars in savings by now.

However, when the teller handed me the account statement, I glanced at the four-figure balance and felt my blood run cold.

After two years, our account balance was only eight thousand dollars.

I flipped through the transaction records. Nearly all of the large expenses had been made two years earlier.

40 thousand dollars had been paid to a renovation company. 28 thousand dollars was spent at a furniture store, while another 30 thousand dollars was spent on electrical appliances. All the other miscellaneous expenses totaled about 2500 dollars.

In total, 100 thousand dollars had been withdrawn from the account, and Violet had authorized every single transaction.

A hundred thousand dollars.

That money was supposed to be set aside for our child's education.

While I, a project manager, was getting teased by my coworkers for wearing discounted suits, Violet had been using all of our savings to renovate a home for another man.

To make matters worse, the home in question was my apartment.

I photographed every bank statement and saved the images in my phone. Then, I began going through our text messages from two years ago.

While she was busy renovating a house for her lover, I was lying on a hospital bed with an IV in my arm.

Back then, my company had taken on a new project. While I entertained clients, I drank so much alcohol that I suffered a severe gastric hemorrhage and nearly died at the dinner table.

I was hospitalized for two months, but Violet had never shown up to visit me. She was too busy keeping another man company.

While I lay in the hospital room, she was using my money to renovate my apartment for someone else.

I took screenshots of everything.

Now that I had secured the evidence, it was finally time to settle the score.

During the weekend, I met up with my good friend from college, William Lawson.

William was a lawyer. After he graduated from law school, he established his own firm.

As he looked through the screenshots on my phone, the smile on his face gradually disappeared.

"How long has this been going on for?" he asked solemnly.

"At least two years," I replied.

"Did she pay for everything using the money from your joint account?"

"That's right." I nodded. "I have records of every transaction."

"Good. In that case, I can help you recover that money. Making large, unauthorized withdrawals from marital assets could be considered dissipation of marital property."

Then, he looked at me and asked, "What are you planning to do?"

"I'm going to file for divorce," I declared.

After a brief pause, I added, "And I want her to walk away with nothing. I want my money back, and I want that homewrecker to know that every inch of the apartment he's living in belongs to me."

William burst into laughter.

"That's the Damian I know."

He was right. I had never been one to let a grudge go.

Over the past few years, Violet had repeatedly hinted that she wanted her name added to the deed for the apartment at Riverbank Residences.

In order to get me to agree, she'd occasionally try to guilt-trip me by claiming that I didn't trust her. Sometimes, she'd also argue that married couples should share every asset they own.

At that time, I couldn't understand why she kept bringing it up. But now, I finally know the truth.

"She wants ownership rights to the apartment," William declared.

Drumming his fingers against the table, he continued, "Once her name is added to the deed, she'd be able to transfer the property to that man or sell it and split the profits."

She had always assumed that I was nothing but an honest yet foolish project manager.

"I've got an idea," William said with a sly grin. "Go home and tell her you've changed your mind about adding her name to the deed."

"Then what?" I asked.

"Then, you can lure them out and catch them red-handed!"

William and I ended up talking for the entire afternoon.

Every step of our plan was carefully mapped out.

On my way home, I received a call from Violet.

"I'm working late tonight. Go ahead and have dinner without me," she said.

"Alright," I responded calmly.

After hanging up, I scoffed inwardly.

Working late?

If I had to guess, she was probably spending time with her secret lover.

"Enjoy your life while you still can, Violet," I thought to myself. "Your carefree days are coming to an end."

The following evening, I casually brought up the topic of adding her name to the deed over dinner.

"Hey, honey. Remember how you asked me about adding your name to the deed for the apartment at Riverbank Residences? I've given it some thought…"

After the divorce agreement was signed, the rest of the proceedings went smoothly, and the division of assets was fairly straightforward. Since I had purchased the apartment at Riverbank Residences in full before our marriage, it naturally belonged to me. As for custody of our daughter, Violet decided not to fight for it and gave it up without further dispute.Regarding the money she had spent on renovations, she signed a repayment agreement after the expenses were officially notarized. In the end, she only managed to walk away with the car her family had gifted us as a wedding gift. She had already squandered all of her money a long time ago.On the day we finalized the divorce, she stopped me outside the courthouse."I'm sorry, Damian."I turned around to look at her. She looked utterly disheveled. "I was wrong," she said.I nodded in agreement. "You were wrong from the very start," I declared. "You lied to both Howard and me. You enjoyed having two men at your beck and c

I stood there and stared at Gretchen with a faint look of amusement. "Your daughter used my money to renovate a home for her lover. On top of that, she also slept with that man in an apartment that belonged to me. Is this what you call a 'good woman?'" I asked."I—""Any woman is better than her."…Two days later, William called."Howard has moved out of the apartment," he said."Okay. Is something wrong?" I asked."He took everything he could dismantle. Now…" he trailed off."He can do what he wants," I replied with a small laugh. "As long as he doesn't tear down any load-bearing walls, I don't really care.""There's something else you should know," William added, his tone shifting. "I heard Violet's going around borrowing money. Her accounts are all frozen, and her credit cards aren't working anymore.""Borrowing money? For what?""Apparently, she hired a lawyer. She's planning to fight for custody of your daughter."I scoffed."She's welcome to try. I don't think the

I looked at her and laughed. "What did you tell me moments ago?" I asked. "You said that everyone makes mistakes and told me to be the bigger person. Now, you're asking me if I knew about this all along?""Tell me, Gretchen. When did you find out about all this?" I asked. She avoided my gaze and stammered, "I-I don't know anything…""Really?"I took out my phone and pulled up a screenshot. It was a text conversation between her and Violet. "Damian can't find out about what's going on at the apartment, Mom," Violet's text read."I know. Just make sure you handle everything properly," Gretchen replied. Those messages had been sent a year ago. "Are you still claiming that you knew nothing?" I asked.I watched as her face gradually turned red with embarrassment. "I-I thought that she was just fooling around…"I cut her off and finished her sentence for her. "You thought that nothing would happen as long as I never found out about it," I declared. She fell silent. I got

Everyone turned to look at me.Gretchen was the first one to speak up."Be the bigger person, Damian," she urged."Don't listen to him. Let's talk this out," Violet pleaded as she sobbed.I didn't respond and simply stared at them calmly.A cheating wife, a shameless homewrecker, and a mother-in-law who couldn't tell right from wrong. I laughed and gave William a nod.Upon seeing this, he immediately stepped forward and handed me the documents."Howard Sutton, right?" I removed the papers from the envelope. "Are you saying that this is your home because you designed the place?""That's right," Howard replied firmly. "Very well then. Why don't you show me the deed to the apartment?"He froze. "V-Vi has the deed…""Does she?"Shaking my head, I pulled out a property deed and roared, "Take a good look! I, Damian Richardson, am the sole owner of this apartment!"Howard's expression stiffened."Do you see this?" I pointed at the registration date."I bought this apartmen

Howard seemed completely oblivious to the tension in the room. Moments later, he enthusiastically introduced the apartment. "Since everyone's here, I'll just get straight to the point," he said. "I really love this place, which is why I spent so much money renovating it."He went on, "You're going to sell it either way. So, why not sell it to me? Just name your price."I didn't reply to his question. Instead, I asked, "Are you not willing to part with this place?""Of course not," he replied, "I built this place up little by little. On top of that…"He stepped forward and took Violet's hand. "This place holds some of our happiest memories together. No amount of money could ever replace that."He failed to notice that Violet was trembling uncontrollably. I nodded with a smile. "That's true. 100 thousand dollars is a lot of money. I can tell that you've put a lot of thought into designing the space."Grinning, Howard responded, "Well, Vi's always been generous."Gretchen wan

"Didn't you say you were going to add my name to the deed?" Violet asked."It's too much of a hassle," I replied. "Besides, after we sell it, the money will still belong to both of us."She froze. After a long pause, she grabbed her phone and said, "I-I should go inform the tenant…"I didn't know what she told him, but I couldn't care less.…The next day, I received a call from an unknown number."Hello, is this Mr. Damian Richardson? My name is Howard Sutton. I'm the tenant of your apartment."Holding my phone, I grinned. They took the bait."Yes, I am. Is there something I can help you with?" I replied."I heard you're selling the apartment. I'm interested in taking it off your hands. Can we meet up and discuss this in person?"How? Was he going to purchase the apartment with my money?"Sure. Let's discuss this in person at the apartment.""See you then."I hung up and gave William a heads-up. Afterward, I called my mother-in-law, Gretchen Munson.Gretchen was a stin
