She Thought I'd Never Leave Until I Took Over Her Company

I had just reached the underground parking garage when Selena hurried after me, her heels clicking sharply against the concrete. She caught up and grabbed my wrist. "Adrian, what was that? Today is the most important day of Julian's career, and you walked out in front of all those reporters. What are people going to think?"I stopped. "What they think has nothing to do with me."She was clearly taken aback. In eight years, I'd rarely spoken to her that way.I handled the tech; she handled the business.Whenever she needed me at an event, I showed up. Whenever she canceled a date at the last minute, I waited. Whenever she said the company came first, I pushed my plans aside.Over time, she must have genuinely believed I would always be standing in the same spot.I looked at her. "Selena, do you remember what you got me for my last birthday? A three-hundred-dollar belt."She frowned. "It was just a gift.""Exactly. Just a gift." I nodded. "I never cared how much it cost. But you went int

I moved into Ethan's apartment for the time being. When he saw my suitcase, he asked only one question. "It's finally over?"I nodded. He didn't offer any comfort. He just grabbed two beers from the fridge and tossed me one. "Then let's talk business. I'll use the five million as planned. Once the first production line is running, I'll show you the numbers."I smiled. "That's exactly why I invested in you."That was the best thing about real friendship. He didn't need me to prove my loyalty, and I didn't need him to thank me. All that mattered was whether something was worth doing. The next morning, Nexora and Cross Dynamics both received cease-and-desist letters. By noon, Orion Labs halted all updates for new modules that hadn't been delivered yet.By two in the afternoon, Nexora's largest retail client sent a risk inquiry. By four, a second client asked for confirmation that the patent dispute wouldn't affect system maintenance. By six, three senior architects on the tech team had su

Cross Dynamics held its product launch in San Francisco.Julian chose a convention center that seated three thousand and invited dozens of tech media outlets and investment funds. He clearly wanted to use this launch to prove that he could turn Orion's technology into his own product without me.Half an hour before the livestream, I received a message from him. "Adrian, I heard you've been hiding out at home. Don't worry. I'm about to show everyone that your technology isn't as special as you think."I didn't reply. The Hale Global board was holding its M&A committee meeting in the next room. The same livestream was playing on our screens.Julian took the stage in a tailored suit, with the massive screen behind him displaying "Atlas: The Next-Generation Enterprise Intelligence Core."He talked about the market first, then the funding, before finally moving on to the live demo. The first module, supply chain forecasting, ran fine. The second, dynamic pricing, lagged for three seconds. W

Three days later, Nexora held an emergency board meeting. Every director attended.Selena sat at the head of the table. Julian's former observer seat had been removed.I sat across from her as Hale Capital's representative. In eight years of knowing each other, this was the first time we had truly sat on opposite sides of a negotiating table. After the meeting opened, the external audit team presented its findings.First, three licensing agreements for Orion's core technology carried a forged signature of mine.Second, Selena had bypassed the standard intellectual property committee by labeling the deal an "urgent commercial partnership" and sending it straight to the legal department for approval.Third, after Nexora invested a hundred million dollars in Cross Dynamics, more than twenty million had been funneled into companies controlled by Julian through consulting fees, related-party deals, and fake R&D contracts.Fourth, Atlas wasn't the fully independent system Cross Dynamics clai
