Chapter 2 The Divorce She Signed Away

Penulis: Henry
But her hands were clenched tightly, as though my words had truly infuriated her. "Apologize to my friends!"

"Exactly! That was just plain rude. He must apologize to us!" Her friends chimed in, their voices growing harsher as they pressured me from all sides.

Cynthia shouted the order at me again, her tone leaving no room for refusal. She was stubbornly refusing to back down, as though saying no would be enough to make her turn against me completely.

But she was wrong.

I no longer loved her, so naturally, I no longer cared about obeying her.

She could concern herself with even her friends' pride, yet she could not spare a thought for how humiliated and miserable I felt at that moment. So what was the point of continuing to chase after a woman like her? I would simply be humiliating myself again.

"Was I really rude? When you were happily accepting the handbags, clothes, and lipsticks I bought you, why didn't you think I was being rude then? Why didn't you ask your Grant to buy them?" I continued sarcastically. "Because he was only good at saying whatever made you happy. He'd never actually open his wallet and pay for anything. So next time you want me to buy you something limited-edition, find someone else to play the sucker. I'm done catering to you."

With that, I turned and walked out of the wedding venue, leaving a seething Cynthia behind.

"Lysander Grenville, that's enough! Get back here!" Cynthia shouted furiously at my retreating figure.

In the past, whenever she got angry, I would immediately give in without a second thought. I was the CEO of Grenville Co., yet I had turned myself into an obedient lapdog who did whatever she wanted. Looking back now, I almost wanted to slap myself twice.

What had I ever seen in her? Was it the way she constantly ran to Grant to fuss over him, even spending the night at his house? Or was it the way she humiliated me whenever and wherever she pleased?

I was not exactly hard on the eyes, either. I was handsome, wealthy, and had treated her like the most precious person in the world. Maybe she had simply taken my devotion for granted, which was why she had felt free to toy with me without restraint.

From this day forward, I would never sacrifice my dignity for her again.

…

The farce finally ended with my departure, but the vicious gossip about me did not.

My parents were so enraged by what had happened that their blood pressure shot up, and they both collapsed.

Before losing consciousness, they warned me never to marry Cynthia again and ordered me to have a lawyer send her divorce papers immediately.

When Cynthia received the divorce agreement, however, she was not angry in the slightest. Instead, she cheerfully signed her name.

"Cynthia, we're sorry. We got you into this mess."

"Grant is gone, and now that bastard has filed for divorce. Poor you!"

Unlike them, Cynthia remained completely calm inside, unaffected by any of it. "You don't seriously think Lysander actually wants to divorce me, do you? He loves me so much. The divorce papers are nothing more than a way to make me give in first. I humiliated him at the wedding, so he wants to get his pride back.

"He must have been reading too many of those brainless groveling trope novels lately. Now he wants to play the part and turn me into the lead character who gets chased after the divorce, complete with a story about how he regrets leaving me. Little would he know that I'd take his ridiculous little act seriously. If he's so sure I wouldn't dare sign it, I'll sign it to show him who's boss!"

At that, Cynthia smugly picked up the glass of red wine from the coffee table and downed it in one go. Yet beneath her composure, there was still a trace of grief in her eyes over Grant's death.

Her friends became even more excited after hearing her explanation and immediately started placing bets.

"How long do you all think it'll take Lysander to come crawling back to Cynthia this time?"

"I'm betting three days."

"My money's on two. There's no way he'll last three."

"That damn man is so pathetic. If he can actually make it past three days, I'll really have to look at him differently."

"Look, he even hit me!" Cynthia turned her injured face toward me, deliberately showing me her wounds. But I remained completely unmoved. I simply stared at her before stepping back with Jocelyn, clearly disgusted. "Ms. Brooke, we're already divorced. There's nothing between us anymore. Whatever difficulties you have from now on, please deal with them with someone else. They have nothing to do with me."Cynthia's body stiffened.Only then did she notice that I was holding Jocelyn's hand. She finally realized that when I said I no longer loved her, I had meant every word.Panicking, she reached out as though she wanted to touch me, but I pulled a stern face and snapped at her. "Please show some respect, ma'am. I already have a girlfriend. Are you trying to make yourself a mistress?"I let out a cold laugh.Cynthia's face had gone completely pale. Her hair was disheveled, and there were still wounds on her face. She had long since lost the radiance she once possessed. Without my pa

Cynthia had been pushed over the edge by what she had just witnessed. She glared viciously at the wealthy woman. "Shut up! You have no right to run your mouth here, you fat pig!"The scene felt eerily familiar.A month ago, Cynthia and Grant had treated me exactly the same way. Now the tables had turned, and it was finally her turn to experience what it felt like to be humiliated and discarded. So instead of going inside to help her, I simply remained outside, watching the two of them tear each other apart. The moment Grant heard Cynthia call the woman in his arms a "fat pig," he released the woman, walked over to Cynthia, grabbed her by the hair, and yanked her up before striking her hard across the face again."You only have your incompetence to blame. I only stayed with you for so long because I thought you'd get half of your husband's fortune once you divorced him. But you're an idiot who walked away with nothing! What use do I have for you then?"Did you really think you wer

She stared at me with undisguised contempt. "Of course I'm going to find him. Just wait and see. Grant and I are going to live happily ever after!"I had not wanted to keep arguing with Cynthia either, but her arrogance made me decide to help her see just how much her so-called true love was really worth."You said Grant loved you more than anything?""That's right!""Come with me. Tell Grant that you walked away from the marriage with nothing—not even a marital home—and see if he still loves you afterward."I grabbed my car keys and walked out first. Although Cynthia looked confused, she still followed me.The sports car roared to life. Soon we were speeding toward our destination, leaving a trail of dust behind us.Neither of us said a word the entire journey. It was pin-drop silence. After a while, Cynthia's ringtone shattered the silence. It was Grant calling. Her expression softened immediately, and her voice grew sweet and gentle. "Grant, did you miss me—what? You're goi

I quickly caught her wrist and forcefully shoved her away."You're absolutely insane! How can you call the cops on my brother? Fuck you!""What? Cynthia, what happened?"Cynthia gave her mother the full story, and then the two immediately hurled insults at me. But I ignored every word and simply looked at the bunch of lunatics in front of me.I honestly could not understand what I had been thinking back then. How had I ever fallen in love with a woman like her?But I needed to resolve this quickly. I could not let them damage the company's reputation. If they insisted I had gone crazy and caused all this trouble, I would show them exactly what crazy looked like."Cynthia, I never wanted to make things this ugly. I even wanted to leave you some dignity. But you kept digging your own grave and pushing me further and further. Your brother did a hit-and-run and tried to make me take the blame for him. You cheated on me, yet you claimed I'd betrayed you first. Well, I'll be a fool if

Cynthia's mother in particular looked like a venomous snake. The hatred in her eyes was so intense that she looked as though she wanted to tear me to pieces. When I saw those two parasites, I turned grim, for I knew exactly why they had come. The conference room fell into deathly silence. The employees all held their breath, not daring to make a sound. They all knew how much I had indulged Cynthia's parents in the past. I had even let her brother into the company through connections and special treatment. That man clearly did not have what it took to be a designer, yet he had forced his way into the position anyway. Once, while I was away on a business trip, he had used his status as the CEO's brother-in-law to fire an actual designer and take over the job himself. He had turned my company upside down, leaving the employees furious and constantly complaining. Eventually, I could not take it anymore and fired him, only for Cynthia to storm into my office and demand an explanation.

It was Grant calling. Apparently I still had his number saved.I answered, puzzled, and immediately heard the mocking tone in his voice. "I'm sure you've already seen Cynthia's post, so I might as well tell you the truth. I faked my death. Cynthia knew about it too. The whole point was to force you into divorcing her so you'd have to give her half your assets."Oh, and thanks for taking care of her for me all these years. You spoiled her rotten. You should've seen how seductive she was when she begged for me. She's a slut, and you're an idiot. Honestly, you two are pretty well matched."My grip tightened around the phone until my knuckles turned white. I pressed my lips together and said nothing while Grant laughed mockingly. It turned out Cynthia had staged this entire performance just to force me into divorcing her. No wonder she had shown up to our wedding in mourning clothes, then signed the divorce papers without the slightest hesitation. She had never given me even the tinies
