Chapter 3 The Fool Finally Woke Up

Author: Henry
Cynthia curled her lips into a mocking smile and lazily leaned back against the sofa. "By tomorrow at the latest, he'll show up with a bouquet of roses. Maybe a limited-edition piece of jewelry, too. Then, he'll wag his tail like a dog, doing everything he can to win me over. The last time we fought, he came running back to pick me up less than three hours later."

I heard every word Cynthia said, for her best friend had called me on WhatsApp the moment Cynthia started talking.

Her friend was no better, really. She was always encouraging Cynthia to see Grant, all because she held a grudge against me for refusing to introduce her to a scion.

After hearing Cynthia speak with such absolute certainty, I sneered inwardly. 'She's got quite the confidence, believing that I'd go crawling back to her and apologize. If she thinks I'd fall apart without her… Bitch!"

…

After Cynthia signed the divorce agreement, she handed it back to my lawyer and told him to take it away.

"Take it back to him. Tell him I'm furious, and this time, there's no talking me down. Unless he apologizes on his knees and begs me, I'm not forgiving him."

My lawyer looked at her, speechless, thinking, 'This woman really thinks she's God's gift to men.'

What she did not know was that while I listened to her talk, I was sitting there wholly accepting the blind dates my mother had arranged for me.

I even called my assistant and told him to freeze all of Cynthia's bank cards. After all, we were divorced now. Why should I keep giving her money to spend?

While Grant was still alive, she had constantly used my money to help him.

When his business failed, she took 100 million from one of my accounts and gave it to him so he could start over, without even discussing it with me. When I found out, we fought for the first time. Instead of feeling guilty, she called me petty, questioning why a wealthy heir like me could possibly be so stingy.

And that was not even the worst of it.

She had treated my money like a bottomless pit, using it to buy houses and cars for her family. When I finally could not take it anymore, she had argued that her family was my family too and accused me of being petty over money.

At the time, we were only dating, nowhere close to getting married.

Her parents, meanwhile, had pretended to be generous by putting only my name on the deeds, all while quietly calculating how to secure their future. They had assumed that once their daughter married me, they would be able to manipulate me whenever they wanted.

It was not just the houses they had their eyes on—they wanted the company to bear the Brooke name, too.

They had mocked me to my face for being a fool while spending my money without the slightest bit of guilt. Now, I had to thank them for putting only my name on everything back then. It made it that much easier for me to take back every house and car I had given them.

…

When Cynthia went to pay the bill, she finally discovered that her bank cards had been frozen. Furious, she called me immediately. "Lysander, why did you freeze my cards? Don't push it! I've put up with you for long enough."

Even through the phone, I could feel the fury radiating from Cynthia.

"Get over here and pay the bill right now. Otherwise, I'm not coming home tonight, and you'll regret it."

I laughed upon hearing that.

She had been drinking herself silly for Grant, and she had even opened several bottles of expensive red wine with her friends. She loved another man, yet she was using my money to entertain that whole pack of freeloaders.

"Didn't your friends say I'm not as good as Grant? They don't want my money anyway. So why don't you have that whole group of friends of yours, the ones who supposedly don't care about worldly possessions, pay the bill for you?"

Apparently, something in what I said immediately told Cynthia that she had me wrapped around her little finger again.

"So, you're still jealous about what happened last time. You really are narrow-minded. How are you ever going to get anywhere in life with so little tolerance? If you had even half of Grant's generosity, why would I always have to give you attitude? Maybe you should spend some time reflecting on yourself."

What exactly was I supposed to reflect on? If Cynthia had only been someone I was casually dating rather than my wife, I would have been more generous than Grant ever was.

"Look, he even hit me!" Cynthia turned her injured face toward me, deliberately showing me her wounds. But I remained completely unmoved. I simply stared at her before stepping back with Jocelyn, clearly disgusted. "Ms. Brooke, we're already divorced. There's nothing between us anymore. Whatever difficulties you have from now on, please deal with them with someone else. They have nothing to do with me."Cynthia's body stiffened.Only then did she notice that I was holding Jocelyn's hand. She finally realized that when I said I no longer loved her, I had meant every word.Panicking, she reached out as though she wanted to touch me, but I pulled a stern face and snapped at her. "Please show some respect, ma'am. I already have a girlfriend. Are you trying to make yourself a mistress?"I let out a cold laugh.Cynthia's face had gone completely pale. Her hair was disheveled, and there were still wounds on her face. She had long since lost the radiance she once possessed. Without my pa

Cynthia had been pushed over the edge by what she had just witnessed. She glared viciously at the wealthy woman. "Shut up! You have no right to run your mouth here, you fat pig!"The scene felt eerily familiar.A month ago, Cynthia and Grant had treated me exactly the same way. Now the tables had turned, and it was finally her turn to experience what it felt like to be humiliated and discarded. So instead of going inside to help her, I simply remained outside, watching the two of them tear each other apart. The moment Grant heard Cynthia call the woman in his arms a "fat pig," he released the woman, walked over to Cynthia, grabbed her by the hair, and yanked her up before striking her hard across the face again."You only have your incompetence to blame. I only stayed with you for so long because I thought you'd get half of your husband's fortune once you divorced him. But you're an idiot who walked away with nothing! What use do I have for you then?"Did you really think you wer

She stared at me with undisguised contempt. "Of course I'm going to find him. Just wait and see. Grant and I are going to live happily ever after!"I had not wanted to keep arguing with Cynthia either, but her arrogance made me decide to help her see just how much her so-called true love was really worth."You said Grant loved you more than anything?""That's right!""Come with me. Tell Grant that you walked away from the marriage with nothing—not even a marital home—and see if he still loves you afterward."I grabbed my car keys and walked out first. Although Cynthia looked confused, she still followed me.The sports car roared to life. Soon we were speeding toward our destination, leaving a trail of dust behind us.Neither of us said a word the entire journey. It was pin-drop silence. After a while, Cynthia's ringtone shattered the silence. It was Grant calling. Her expression softened immediately, and her voice grew sweet and gentle. "Grant, did you miss me—what? You're goi

I quickly caught her wrist and forcefully shoved her away."You're absolutely insane! How can you call the cops on my brother? Fuck you!""What? Cynthia, what happened?"Cynthia gave her mother the full story, and then the two immediately hurled insults at me. But I ignored every word and simply looked at the bunch of lunatics in front of me.I honestly could not understand what I had been thinking back then. How had I ever fallen in love with a woman like her?But I needed to resolve this quickly. I could not let them damage the company's reputation. If they insisted I had gone crazy and caused all this trouble, I would show them exactly what crazy looked like."Cynthia, I never wanted to make things this ugly. I even wanted to leave you some dignity. But you kept digging your own grave and pushing me further and further. Your brother did a hit-and-run and tried to make me take the blame for him. You cheated on me, yet you claimed I'd betrayed you first. Well, I'll be a fool if

Cynthia's mother in particular looked like a venomous snake. The hatred in her eyes was so intense that she looked as though she wanted to tear me to pieces. When I saw those two parasites, I turned grim, for I knew exactly why they had come. The conference room fell into deathly silence. The employees all held their breath, not daring to make a sound. They all knew how much I had indulged Cynthia's parents in the past. I had even let her brother into the company through connections and special treatment. That man clearly did not have what it took to be a designer, yet he had forced his way into the position anyway. Once, while I was away on a business trip, he had used his status as the CEO's brother-in-law to fire an actual designer and take over the job himself. He had turned my company upside down, leaving the employees furious and constantly complaining. Eventually, I could not take it anymore and fired him, only for Cynthia to storm into my office and demand an explanation.

It was Grant calling. Apparently I still had his number saved.I answered, puzzled, and immediately heard the mocking tone in his voice. "I'm sure you've already seen Cynthia's post, so I might as well tell you the truth. I faked my death. Cynthia knew about it too. The whole point was to force you into divorcing her so you'd have to give her half your assets."Oh, and thanks for taking care of her for me all these years. You spoiled her rotten. You should've seen how seductive she was when she begged for me. She's a slut, and you're an idiot. Honestly, you two are pretty well matched."My grip tightened around the phone until my knuckles turned white. I pressed my lips together and said nothing while Grant laughed mockingly. It turned out Cynthia had staged this entire performance just to force me into divorcing her. No wonder she had shown up to our wedding in mourning clothes, then signed the divorce papers without the slightest hesitation. She had never given me even the tinies
