Chapter 141

Penulis: Luna Starling
“Forgive me, I came at the wrong time,” Lily said with a gentle smile as she stepped inside. “I heard Grandma Mary had returned and thought I should visit her. I didn’t expect to intrude on dinner.”

Her sudden appearance caught everyone off guard.

Nora’s gaze immediately cut to Travis, cold and sharp. This was supposed to be a family dinner. He had dragged her here, yet couldn’t even protect her dignity.

Even Travis himself hadn’t expected Lily to show up. But when he met Nora’s half-mocking, half-contemptuous eyes, the faint smile that had been tugging at his mouth disappeared. His tone chilled as he looked at Lily. “This is a family dinner. What are you doing here at the estate?”

Lily’s face stiffened. He wasn’t welcoming her?

Then she noticed the way Grandma Marry was looking at her—calm, but carrying a quiet weight. Flustered, she started to explain, “I just…”

“I invited her.”

Susan set down her silverwares with practiced poise and smiled at Mary. “I didn’t know you’d be com

She snatched up the plastic stand that held the hotel guide and hurled it at him.Travis happened to look up just as she swung. The sharp corner caught him squarely on the brow. The stand clattered to the floor with a dull thud.A gash split open above his eye, and blood began running down his face. The sight of it jolted Nora. Rage still burned in her chest, but the shock cleared her head for a moment.“You…”Travis wiped at the blood with his fingers. When they came away red, he didn’t curse, didn’t shout. Instead, he lifted his chin toward the vase sitting on the table.“If you’re still angry,” he said quietly, “you can use that next.”Nora drew a long breath. Her voice was cold, her eyes flat. “Leave. I don’t ever want to see you again.”Her words hit him like a blow. His body stiffened, as though he couldn’t bear the weight of them.“Nora.”He took a step toward her on instinct. She immediately backed away, denying him even an inch of closeness. The guarded, defensive

Nora felt the door catch. She spun around and froze when she saw a pale, strong hand braced against it. The shock ripped a scream out of her.“It’s me.”The door shoved inward, and Travis’s dark, stormy face appeared on the other side.Nora thought bitterly that her luck had been cursed lately. First Eric had scared her during the blackout, and now Travis had to show up at a spa of all places. Whatever good mood she’d had instantly evaporated.“Travis, if you’ve lost your mind, go see a doctor. Stop showing up like some ghost haunting me!”His long fingers pressed against the door, his black eyes sweeping the room behind her. “What are you so nervous about? Afraid I’ll find another man in here?”When he tried to push past, Nora jammed her foot against the door to block him. “And what if there is? What’s it to you?”The fact that she didn’t deny it sent a chill flooding through him, as if his whole body had been dunked in ice. His fingertips actually went numb.“Nora, you’re a m

Lily’s face had just fallen when the girl beside her suddenly snapped,“Lily was being nice asking you a question, and this is how you talk? So rude!”Nora gave a cold little laugh. “I only bother with manners toward people.”“You—”“Jayley, stop,” Yanny cut her off quickly. Because of what happened with the design project last time, she still felt guilty toward Nora. “Miss Yates, my friend didn’t know the situation. Please don’t take her words to heart.”Nora smiled faintly. “Miss Carter, after what happened last time, I thought you’d keep your distance from her.”Yanny froze, her face stiff, and didn’t respond.Lily’s expression shifted. She forced a soft, fragile tone. “Nora, I already apologized to you last time and explained everything. If you still can’t let it go, then I can apologize again.”She said it, but made no move to do so.Nora had long since seen through her act. Her eyes stayed cool as she replied, “Lily, drop the performance. Whether you apologize or even ge

“Nora, are you free today? A friend of mine is opening a spa, and I’d love for you to come with me and show some support.”Nora hadn’t been feeling well, so she agreed. They arranged to meet at the entrance at six in the evening. She saw a message from her neighborhood group saying the power was back on, so she checked out of the hotel, went home, and fell straight into bed. By the time she woke up again, it was already dark. Remembering her plan with Jennifer, she grabbed her bag and rushed for the door.Halfway out, she hesitated, turned back, and pulled out the bikini she had stuffed at the bottom of her suitcase. The spa was nestled halfway up a mountain, exactly the kind of place that would pass for “natural.” Pulling into the outdoor parking lot, Nora spotted Jennifer stepping out of a van.“Nora!”Jennifer had come down wearing nothing but a white bikini, probably to make it easier to head straight into the springs. Behind her trailed a frazzled assistant clutching a c

Travis’s gaze was heavy as he looked at her. “Why won’t you take him to preschool?”Nora let go of the doorknob and shot back coolly. “Because I have a job. And besides, you’re his legal guardian now.”“But you’re his mother.” Travis’s voice hardened when he saw her pushing back.Nora laughed in disbelief. “We’re divorced. Taking him to school is your duty, not mine. You don’t get to hand off responsibility to me while you play the absent father.”Travis’s eyes turned icy. “I never said I wouldn’t take him. But Quinton wants you there. You should—”“Should what?” Nora’s tone sharpened. “Just because I’m his mother, I’m supposed to chain myself to him, never have a life of my own?”“That’s not what I meant.” His brows pulled together.Nora gave a cold smile. “You know exactly what you meant. But I’m not the woman I used to be. I won’t be at your beck and call again.”Travis faltered. He wanted to say it was just school drop-off, nothing more. Yet the words caught in his throat u

The moment Quinton heard Nora’s voice at the door, his first instinct was to rip off the dinosaur pajamas. He struggled for ages, but they wouldn’t come off. Afraid she’d lose patience and walk away, he had no choice but to open the door, looking disheveled and shy.“I’m not afraid,” he blurted out, his voice small. “Because you once said I looked cute in them.”After that, he twisted his fingers nervously, working them so hard they turned red.Nora crouched down and gently pushed his hands apart. “What are you trying to do, break your own fingers?”Quinton’s mouth trembled, and in that instant, all the hurt he’d bottled up came flooding out. He threw his arms around her neck and burst into tears.“Mom… Mom…”The last few weeks had been unbearable for him. The mother who used to give him everything had suddenly turned cold, acting like she didn’t want him anymore. He’d tried everything to get her attention, but nothing worked. He’d even told himself she was awful and he should ju
