Chapter 3

Author: Katerina
Over the next three days, Luca began to notice something was different.

I used to get up half an hour before him so breakfast would be ready when he left at eight.

At noon, I'd ask whether he'd eaten.

If he wasn't home by eleven, there would be at least two messages from me on his phone.

Now I did none of it.

On the fourth evening, he came home before eight for the first time in months.

He looked straight at me, seated at the desk with a stack of contracts for my design studio.

“Is your phone broken?”

“No.”

I didn't look up.

“Then why haven't you texted me all day?”

My pen paused.

“You've muted my messages. Does it make a difference whether I send them?”

He went still.

“I mute notifications so I can work without being interrupted. It isn't an excuse to take shots at me.”

“I'm not.”

I returned to the contract.

“I just think you were right. Adults have lives of their own. We don't need to organize everything around each other.”

For once, Luca had no immediate answer.

A few seconds later, he went into the bathroom, jaw tight. Soon I heard the shower.

A new email appeared on my laptop.

Claire had sent the draft settlement.

At the bottom, she'd added a note: Read this over. If you're comfortable with the terms, it may help to speak with your husband before we proceed.

I stared at the sentence for a long time.

I no longer wanted to tell him about the baby.

But I could at least tell him, face-to-face, that our marriage was over.

The bathroom door opened.

“Luca.”

He rubbed a towel through his hair.

“What?”

“We need to—”

His phone rang.

He answered and put it on speaker without thinking.

“Luca? My gum's bleeding again.”

His brow tightened.

“How much?”

“I'm not sure. A little on the gauze.” Bianca's voice grew smaller. “I'm home alone. It's scaring me.”

He set the towel down.

“Don't panic. I'll come take a look.”

He ended the call and reached for his jacket.

“She said it was only a little blood,” I said.

“She just had surgery. You don't take chances with a wound.”

Then he seemed to remember me.

“What were you going to say?”

Before I could answer, he picked up his keys.

“Never mind. It can wait until I get back.”

The door shut.

I replied to Claire.

The terms are fine. Let's proceed.

For a while, I sat very still.

Then I looked at my left hand.

I'd worn that ring for three years. In the shower. While cooking. Even when my fingers swelled and the band hurt.

I'd believed that as long as it stayed there, Luca and I were still building a life together.

Now I worked it gently over my knuckle.

When it came free, a deep pale groove remained.

I placed the ring in the drawer beside my discharge report.

Three years of marriage, and the final decision was as quiet as taking off a ring.

At one in the morning, Luca still wasn't home.

Once, I would have texted to ask when he was coming back.

That night, I closed my laptop and switched off the living-room lights.

I didn't ask where he was. I didn't leave a lamp on.

For the first time, it made no difference whether he came home at all.

Six months later, the studio launched its new collection. On the day the first production run sold out, I didn't sit down until ten at night.Dozens of messages waited on my phone—from clients, coworkers, and friends I hadn't heard from in ages.I answered them one by one.Only near the end did I see Luca's name.Congratulations.Thank you, I replied. His answer arrived almost immediately. You're welcome.I didn't open the conversation again. The next day, Nora returned from lunch with two coffees and set one on my desk. She studied me for a moment.“You finally look like yourself again.”I smiled.“Was it that bad?”“When you first moved out? You looked like a strong breeze might take you down.”Her gaze dropped to my hand.I followed it.The pale ring mark had disappeared. I hadn't even noticed when.Nora took the pen out of my fingers.“Come on. Food.”“I haven't finished the revisions.”“Then finish them tomorrow.”She raised an eyebrow.“You spent years making him the center of yo

There was still a wait while the attorneys filed the papers and the court processed everything.During the month that followed, Luca didn't come looking for me.Occasionally, he asked how I was feeling. If I didn't answer, he left it there instead of sending more messages. The care I'd wanted for years had finally appeared, after I'd decided to leave.By the time the divorce was finalized, rain was falling outside Claire's office. We sat across a table to collect the court's judgment and sign the final acknowledgments our attorneys needed. When Claire handed me my copy, I thought about our wedding three years earlier.I'd smiled all the way to the parking lot, clutching the marriage certificate. Luca had called me ridiculous, then lifted a hand to shield my face from the sun.The same man. Another set of papers.Neither of us smiled this time.I put the judgment in my bag. There wasn't the rush of relief I'd expected. There wasn't even much sadness.Only the feeling that something long

After that, Luca stopped turning up at the studio without warning. The messages continued.Breakfast reminders. Questions about whether I'd rested. A check-in to see if I was home.Sometimes I read them. I rarely replied.I wasn't punishing him. There simply wasn't much I wanted to say.Once, after three messages in a row, he added, Please answer when you see this.I stared at the words.I'd typed almost the same thing so many times. Back then, he'd never understood what waiting could do to a person.Learning now was too late.I used to read a reply from him over and over, even if it had taken half a day to arrive. Now he answered almost instantly, and I barely wanted to open the conversation.A week later, I went to Moretti Holdings to collect material from an old project the studio had done with the company. The elevator opened on the twenty-sixth floor, and I heard raised voices.Bianca stood outside Luca's office, her eyes red.“You're moving me out of your office because Elena wan

I moved into a small apartment near the studio. One bedroom, one living room. Not enough space for a proper dining table. Plain cream curtains. But when I put my own mug in the cabinet, I felt something I hadn't felt in years.I was starting a life that belonged to me.That first night, I lay in bed and felt unexpectedly light. No lamp to leave on.No guessing when someone else would come home.No message worth staring at a screen for hours. The next morning, I went back to the studio. The familiar smell of materials greeted me as I opened the door. After the wedding, I'd put most of my energy into our home. I'd kept a handful of design jobs and a few long-term clients, leaving my business partner, Nora, to carry more than her share. She stared when she saw me.“Look who finally remembered she owns half this place.”I smiled.“Get used to seeing me.”She didn't ask what had happened. She pushed a stack of samples across the table instead.“Good. The new collection needs a lead designer

Luca looked as though someone had hit him.He couldn't seem to move. The discharge report creased beneath his fingers.“Why didn't you tell me?”I stopped folding the last few things.“I tried.”I met his eyes.“You didn't let me finish.”He went completely still.I could almost hear the half-spoken sentence returning to him.Luca, I'm at the hospital. The doctor just told me—“I didn't know,” he whispered.“No. You didn't.”I nodded once.“Because you never thought anything happening to me was worth hearing to the end.”I'd believed remembering that night couldn't hurt me any more than it already had. I was wrong.“I couldn't stand up. When I collapsed in the living room, the neighbor heard me. She called the ambulance.”Luca's face had gone gray.“No one came with me into the ER. No one was waiting while I was in surgery. When I woke up, the doctor told me the baby was gone.”“Elena, if I'd known you were pregnant, I would have come.”My throat tightened.“So I needed to be pregnant

After the courier left, I stood in the living room for a long time.I'd lived here for three years.I'd chosen the cabinet by the door. Visited four stores before buying the sofa. Nursed the half-dead fiddle-leaf fig on the balcony back to life. When we first married, Luca was always busy.I had made the apartment a home by myself, telling myself that once things settled down, we'd have time to grow into it together.Eventually, I understood that busy was his normal.Waiting had become mine. For three years, I knew every appointment in his schedule and exactly how he took his coffee.Somewhere along the way, I'd stopped knowing what I liked. The two mugs I'd bought were still beside the dining table. In the early days, he sometimes got up in time to eat breakfast with me. Once, I laughed because his tie was crooked. He complained that I fussed too much, but bent his head so I could straighten it.It was little things like that that kept convincing me he cared. And every time he disappo
