Chapter 4

Author: Katerina
On Saturday morning, I went back for my final scheduled follow-up.

The doctor reviewed the ultrasound.

“You're recovering, but this has taken a toll. Give yourself at least a month to rest and get your strength back.”

She handed me the report.

“Before trying again, it would be worth coming in with your husband so we can discuss everything together.”

“There won't be a next time,” I said quietly.

She paused. Then she let the subject go.

I sat in the hospital lobby for a long time afterward.

Nearby, a man held a newborn. Every tiny cry sent him fumbling, anxious to find out what the baby needed.

I thought about the child who had been with me for only six weeks.

So small.

I'd barely had time to understand that there was someone to love.

And on the day I lost that child, the father was holding an ice pack against another woman's face.

From the hospital, I went to Claire's office.

Two copies of the settlement lay on her desk.

She pushed one toward me.

I picked up the pen and signed my name.

“Would you like me to contact him?” she asked.

“No. I'll send him his copy.”

She kept one for the file. I slid the other into a document envelope.

After three years, we hadn't even managed a conversation about the end.

At home, I put my wedding ring in the envelope with the signed agreement and booked a same-day courier to Luca's office. This was his personal copy; Claire would handle the formal filing and service.

“Please make sure he gets it himself,” I told the courier.

When the door closed, I went to pack. I had decided to leave; all that remained was putting my belongings in a suitcase.

Across town, at Moretti Holdings, Bianca carried a cup of coffee into Luca's office.

“Thank you for taking me back to the clinic so late last night.”

She set it on his desk and smiled.

“It turned out to be nothing. I hope Elena doesn't find out and get upset again.”

Luca frowned but said nothing.

Bianca kept going.

“She really seems to have a problem with me. You've already got enough to deal with without having to manage her moods too.”

A knock interrupted her.

His secretary came in carrying the courier envelope.

“Hand delivery for you, Don Moretti.”

Bianca glanced at the label.

“Elena sent it here? How dramatic. What could possibly be so urgent?”

Luca's expression cooled.

He remembered me at his mother's table, my face almost bloodless.

“Don't speak about her like that.”

Bianca blinked.

“I was only joking.”

“She hasn't been well. Stop making her the punch line.”

He reached for the envelope.

“And from now on, deal with your personal errands yourself. Call me if there's a real emergency.”

Her smile stiffened.

Luca tore open the seal.

My ring slipped out and struck the desk with a small, clear sound.

His hand stopped.

He had put it on my finger himself. In three years, he'd almost never seen me without it.

He pulled out the papers.

MARITAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT.

At the bottom, beneath the terms, was my signature.

Elena Hart.

His phone rang before he could turn the page.

He answered automatically.

“Mr. Moretti? This is the postoperative care nurse at St. Catherine's. Elena listed you as her support contact and authorized us to discuss her recovery. We couldn't reach her this afternoon. Has she had any more bleeding since the miscarriage?”

The paper crumpled in his hand.

“The what?”

Bianca had gone very still beside the desk.

The nurse repeated the word, gently this time.

And for the first time in his life, the Don of the Moretti family couldn't make himself speak.

Six months later, the studio launched its new collection. On the day the first production run sold out, I didn't sit down until ten at night.Dozens of messages waited on my phone—from clients, coworkers, and friends I hadn't heard from in ages.I answered them one by one.Only near the end did I see Luca's name.Congratulations.Thank you, I replied. His answer arrived almost immediately. You're welcome.I didn't open the conversation again. The next day, Nora returned from lunch with two coffees and set one on my desk. She studied me for a moment.“You finally look like yourself again.”I smiled.“Was it that bad?”“When you first moved out? You looked like a strong breeze might take you down.”Her gaze dropped to my hand.I followed it.The pale ring mark had disappeared. I hadn't even noticed when.Nora took the pen out of my fingers.“Come on. Food.”“I haven't finished the revisions.”“Then finish them tomorrow.”She raised an eyebrow.“You spent years making him the center of yo

There was still a wait while the attorneys filed the papers and the court processed everything.During the month that followed, Luca didn't come looking for me.Occasionally, he asked how I was feeling. If I didn't answer, he left it there instead of sending more messages. The care I'd wanted for years had finally appeared, after I'd decided to leave.By the time the divorce was finalized, rain was falling outside Claire's office. We sat across a table to collect the court's judgment and sign the final acknowledgments our attorneys needed. When Claire handed me my copy, I thought about our wedding three years earlier.I'd smiled all the way to the parking lot, clutching the marriage certificate. Luca had called me ridiculous, then lifted a hand to shield my face from the sun.The same man. Another set of papers.Neither of us smiled this time.I put the judgment in my bag. There wasn't the rush of relief I'd expected. There wasn't even much sadness.Only the feeling that something long

After that, Luca stopped turning up at the studio without warning. The messages continued.Breakfast reminders. Questions about whether I'd rested. A check-in to see if I was home.Sometimes I read them. I rarely replied.I wasn't punishing him. There simply wasn't much I wanted to say.Once, after three messages in a row, he added, Please answer when you see this.I stared at the words.I'd typed almost the same thing so many times. Back then, he'd never understood what waiting could do to a person.Learning now was too late.I used to read a reply from him over and over, even if it had taken half a day to arrive. Now he answered almost instantly, and I barely wanted to open the conversation.A week later, I went to Moretti Holdings to collect material from an old project the studio had done with the company. The elevator opened on the twenty-sixth floor, and I heard raised voices.Bianca stood outside Luca's office, her eyes red.“You're moving me out of your office because Elena wan

I moved into a small apartment near the studio. One bedroom, one living room. Not enough space for a proper dining table. Plain cream curtains. But when I put my own mug in the cabinet, I felt something I hadn't felt in years.I was starting a life that belonged to me.That first night, I lay in bed and felt unexpectedly light. No lamp to leave on.No guessing when someone else would come home.No message worth staring at a screen for hours. The next morning, I went back to the studio. The familiar smell of materials greeted me as I opened the door. After the wedding, I'd put most of my energy into our home. I'd kept a handful of design jobs and a few long-term clients, leaving my business partner, Nora, to carry more than her share. She stared when she saw me.“Look who finally remembered she owns half this place.”I smiled.“Get used to seeing me.”She didn't ask what had happened. She pushed a stack of samples across the table instead.“Good. The new collection needs a lead designer

Luca looked as though someone had hit him.He couldn't seem to move. The discharge report creased beneath his fingers.“Why didn't you tell me?”I stopped folding the last few things.“I tried.”I met his eyes.“You didn't let me finish.”He went completely still.I could almost hear the half-spoken sentence returning to him.Luca, I'm at the hospital. The doctor just told me—“I didn't know,” he whispered.“No. You didn't.”I nodded once.“Because you never thought anything happening to me was worth hearing to the end.”I'd believed remembering that night couldn't hurt me any more than it already had. I was wrong.“I couldn't stand up. When I collapsed in the living room, the neighbor heard me. She called the ambulance.”Luca's face had gone gray.“No one came with me into the ER. No one was waiting while I was in surgery. When I woke up, the doctor told me the baby was gone.”“Elena, if I'd known you were pregnant, I would have come.”My throat tightened.“So I needed to be pregnant

  • She Needed Him. I Needed a Divorce   Chapter 5

After the courier left, I stood in the living room for a long time.I'd lived here for three years.I'd chosen the cabinet by the door. Visited four stores before buying the sofa. Nursed the half-dead fiddle-leaf fig on the balcony back to life. When we first married, Luca was always busy.I had made the apartment a home by myself, telling myself that once things settled down, we'd have time to grow into it together.Eventually, I understood that busy was his normal.Waiting had become mine. For three years, I knew every appointment in his schedule and exactly how he took his coffee.Somewhere along the way, I'd stopped knowing what I liked. The two mugs I'd bought were still beside the dining table. In the early days, he sometimes got up in time to eat breakfast with me. Once, I laughed because his tie was crooked. He complained that I fussed too much, but bent his head so I could straighten it.It was little things like that that kept convincing me he cared. And every time he disappo
