Chapter 6

Author: Bitter Egg
Margaret took hold of Noah and tried to pull him toward the bedroom.

He tore his arm free so violently that she went down. Brownish liquid seeped through one leg of her pants.

Noah pinched his nose shut, disgusted.

"When Ethan told me you were sick, I figured he was making it up to get me home," he said, cold. "I had no idea it was this bad. Your memory's scrambled and you can't even keep yourself clean."

Then something occurred to him, and one corner of his mouth pulled up.

"Although this time your illness did me a favor."

Ethan's spirit was still in the room. When his mother fell, he reached out for her without thinking.

His hand went through her.

He looked down at his own fingers and something like a smile crossed his face.

He'd forgotten.

He was dead. He was never going to take care of her again.

Two years ago, Margaret had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

At first it was small confusions. Then it got worse, until she couldn't live on her own, and her memory settled and stopped in the weeks after her husband's death, ten years back.

In the world she lived in now, Noah was always about to leave for Curtis, and Ethan was always somewhere in the house, furious about it.

Day after day, she was trapped in that one afternoon.

Just as she was now, flat on the floor, dragging a fallen couch cushion into her arms and murmuring to it as though it were her elder son.

"Ethan, don't be angry with Mom. Noah's my baby, I have to give him the best I've got. You're his big brother. Would it be so terrible to stay here with me and take care of me? Would it?"

Ethan had heard that speech more times than he could count. It still made him cry.

He'd always known his mother loved him. When boys at school picked on him, she went down there and made them sorry. When he nearly died protecting Vivian, nobody was more frightened or more outraged than she was.

But her love had always been a selfish thing.

She'd read his journal without asking and told Vivian what she found in it. She wouldn't let him study abroad, wouldn't even let him leave Chicago--she wanted him tied to her side.

And she sent his brother chasing a dream with everything the family had, and never once counted the cost.

Ethan had known since he was a boy.

It wasn't that his mother didn't love him.

She just loved Noah more.

The same way Vivian did.

Something in his chest peeled slowly away from the bone. Ethan stood and looked down at his mother, shaking on the floor, and finally spoke.

"Mom. I don't blame you. I really don't."

I don't blame you.

But I'm not going to be here anymore, either.

Ethan turned and went.

Downstairs, Vivian was taking a call from the police.

"About the reexamination," she said. "It won't be necessary after all."

But the detective's voice came back fast and urgent.

"That's not why we're calling, Professor. There's been a development. We have a name on the fan who abducted Noah Shaw--Corey Vance. We searched his residence and we found human remains.

"Testing indicates they're the hands and feet missing from your unidentified victim."

By the time Vivian got to the medical examiner's office, the place was in chaos.

The abduction and the mutilation homicide were now one case.

Daniel sighed over what they'd recovered. "The hands and feet were dumped in concentrated acid. There's not much left, but there's something. We're not getting out of here tonight."

Then he glanced toward the door.

"Oh--Professor, I texted your husband that you'd be here overnight. He hasn't brought your things by yet?"

Vivian's forceps went still in her hand.

She worked at the university; the county office only called her in for the difficult ones. Whenever a case kept her here overnight, Daniel would text Ethan, and Ethan would come with a change of clothes.

He always brought more than that. Food, coffee, enough for every detective and examiner pulling the same shift.

He couldn't speak, and he was afraid of interrupting her, so he'd stand near the door and watch her from a distance.

And when their eyes happened to meet, his whole face would open into a smile.

This time he hadn't come.

Was he still angry about Noah?

That crawling unease rose in her again, and she made herself set it down.

"Let's begin the second examination," she said.

She was about to step into the morgue when a commotion broke out in the hall.

It was Tessa. She pushed past everyone trying to stop her and came straight at Vivian, white-faced.

"Vivian, it's bad. Noah and Ethan are all over the internet."

"Vivian!"Detective Harris was shouting, staring at her, and in that second he finally understood. She had looked like she was cooperating. She had said it was about catching the man.She had decided a long time ago that she was going to do it herself. But Vance wasn't slow either. The instant she moved, so did the knife in his hand.It opened her throat. They went down together."Get a medic!""Ambulance, now!"People were running and shouting all around her.Vivian couldn't hear any of it.She lay where she'd fallen, suffocating, feeling the blood go out of her.For a moment nothing was quite real. She'd been a forensic pathologist for years. She'd handled more bodies than she could count and seen every way a person can end.And here, at last, was her own.She wasn't frightened. She wasn't panicking. What she felt was relief. She closed her eyes.Ethan.I've avenged you. Every person who did this to you has paid for it.Noah. This man.And me.Because Vivian had

Because she loved him, she hadn't been able to accept that he was dead, and she'd lied to herself over and over to keep him alive.Because she loved him, Noah's true face hadn't touched her at all. All she felt was that Ethan was gone.Or maybe it started earlier than that.Because she'd already loved him, she'd wanted him on the nights she reached for him.Because she'd already loved him, some part of her got frightened and made her live at the university and work herself numb. And every time she was truly at the end of herself, she'd come back to that apartment anyway, because she needed to look at him one more time.Vivian finally understood. She'd fallen for her husband a long time ago, and she'd refused to admit it.She wouldn't admit that her heart had changed. She wouldn't admit that six years of ordinary days had done what she'd sworn they couldn't. So she made herself kinder to Noah, and she made herself stay away from home. And that--her own certainty about herself--

The case closed. That night Tessa took Vivian out for a drink."Don't do this to yourself," she said, pushing a glass across the table with a sigh. "Everybody falls for at least one piece of garbage when they're young. Don't take it to heart."She watched her friend quietly, and there was nothing in her face but worry. She was genuinely afraid.More afraid, honestly, than she'd been the day they confirmed Ethan was dead.Because she knew exactly what Vivian's marriage had been. Gratitude at the start, and duty after that.Noah was different. Noah was the thing she'd burned for from girlhood into her thirties. And now the man she'd wanted all that time turned out to be vicious, and a liar, and capable of talking someone else into murder for him.Nobody takes a blow like that standing up.But to Tessa's surprise, Vivian didn't seem shaken at all.She just said, evenly, "It doesn't matter. He'll answer to the law."Tessa stared at her.She couldn't help asking. "You're... not

Everything went out of Noah's face at once.Vivian's eyes were ice, and they went through whatever he had left."Noah. You still have his phone. Why? What were you going to do with it?"He panicked. He knew there was nothing left to say. The proof was sitting in his bag.He broke down sobbing, hoarse, trying desperately to talk his way out of it."Vivian, I swear I didn't mean for any of this--"The tears were running down his face and his voice shook."It was Vance. He killed my brother. And afterward he came and threatened me and left me the phone. I was terrified. I didn't dare say anything, because if I opened my mouth he'd kill me too."I only kept it because it was the last thing of my brother's I had. And when you started calling, I answered because I didn't want you worrying."He was screaming it now."I never wanted anything to happen to Ethan! He was my brother! Nobody in this world is grieving harder than I am!"The story had holes in it everywhere. The Vivian o

"What is it, Professor?" One of the detectives had caught the change in her.Vivian didn't say. Her face had gone hard."There's something I need to confirm."That evening she met Noah at a French restaurant.Candlelight moved between them. He was as handsome as ever, and the smile he was wearing didn't fit."Vivian, do you want to explain something to me?"His voice was cold."Why did you go back online and reverse it? Do you understand what you've done? Curtis has revoked my degree. The orchestra has terminated my contract."Days ago, her forged statement in Ethan's name had turned the whole story around and saved Noah's position and his credentials. Now she'd turned it around again, laid the evidence out piece by piece, and destroyed everything he had built on his brother's name.He was expelled. His degree was gone. The Symphony was done with him. His reputation was finished.Online he had nowhere to stand. And once the police announced that Ethan Shaw had been killed b
