Elena’s POV

“What?” I splutter, my heart leaping immediately to my throat. “Just… okay, just keep her at the gate. I’m coming.”

“But Elena,” Tristan protests.

I shake my head. “This needs to be dealt with.” I turn to the tree house, seeing that both Liam and Sophie are happily playing. When they see me, they wave, and I say, “I’ll be gone for a little while. I’ll be back soon.”

“Where are you going?” Sophie asks.

“Just over there to talk to someone,” I say vaguely, stepping away with the guard

THREE MONTHS LATER.Elena’s POVI remember my first wedding day, and this can’t be any more different. There were flowers back then. Also music. But somehow, it wasn’t happy. Now, my family is gathered in the church, decorated with so many flowers and little lights that it almost feels like I’m in a castle. I’m wearing a pretty dress, and Linda is moving over me to put a veil on my hair. Sophie is holding a bouquet of pink and white roses, handing it to me with a kiss on my cheek.“You look so beautiful, Mommy,” she says.“You too, baby.” I kiss her. “I love you so much.”“I love you more, Mommy.” She pulls away, winking. “It’s starting!”“Everyone, fall in line!” the coordinator barks, and Sophie runs off.Uncle Marcus and Grandpa Harold appear next to me, taking my arms. “It’s showtime, my darling girl.”The music starts, and I walk slowly towards the altar.Towards Tristan. The love of my life.As I walk, all our moments flash before my eyes. The good and the bad. Our years apart a

Tristan’s POV“It’s just a graze. The bullet didn’t go right through.”The news hit the waiting room like a soothing salve, and after hours of standing and pacing the room even with my busted leg, I finally sit down.Elena is alive.Elena is okay.“She’s bruised and sore, but she’s good to have some visitors now.”“Thank god,” everyone heaved, rushing inside the room.Elena is right there, sitting on the bed. Her face is a bit puffy and pale, but as soon as she saw us, she smiles.“Don’t speak just yet,” Uncle Marcus says as Elena tries to open her mouth. “We know that you’re bruised and wounded. Just relax, okay?”Elena nods, still wincing a little in pain.“We’re so happy you’re okay, Mommy,” Liam says in a low voice, carefully kissing her cheek.Sophie sits on the lower side of the bed and hugs Elena’s legs. “We were very scared.”Even though we can all tell that Elena is having a hard time speaking, she still says, “I’m good now. Your daddy saved my life. Mine and Linda’s. He went

Tristan’s POV“I think this is it,” I say, taking the ring in my hand and showing Sophie and Liam. “A paraiba tourmaline. It’s the same kind of stone as your mom’s necklace. The very first necklace she made. Do you think she’s going to love it?”Sophie is staring at the gem in awe. Liam is smiling. “I thinks she’s going to be really happy, Daddy.”“Then I’ll take it,” I declare, grinning like a fool as I hand it to the lady. “I want that in a nice velvet box. The best one you have.”“Wonderful, sir,” the lady says, walking away.“Do you think she’s going to say yes, Daddy?” Sophie asks, which makes my heart stumble.“Don’t ask me things like that!” I tell her, chuckling. But I would be lying if I said that her words didn’t make me nervous. “I really hope she would say yes. But if she doesn’t, it’s fine. I can wait. We’re still together. We still love each other.”We sit at the lounge, and the two kids sit on either side of me. I wrap my arms around them, pulling them close.I’ve never

Why Linda wanted to meet up in one of her dingy, small offices in the middle of nowhere, I don’t know. But I learned long ago not to question her, seeing as she’s a big diva and a control freak. I love her for that, but she’s the last person I want to doubt.I pull up in front of the office, frowning. The place is still under construction. The roof doesn’t look done, and some of the walls are still unpainted. There are no workers around either. There’s just this eerie silence that’s ringing in my ears…Am I just being paranoid, or does it feel like something else is hanging in the air?I would be lying if I said that everything was smooth for the past weeks. Well, it was all smooth in the external front, but inside my mind, it’s been a little hellish.Don’t get me wrong—I’ve never been happier. Things seem to be looking up.But that’s exactly the problem. The good things just made the silence all the louder. I feel like something bad is just waiting to happen, lurking in the corner li

Third Person POVThe vault contained… everything.Elena and Tristan sat on the floor of her office, rifling through the papers one by one.The evidence was… stacked. The contractors, the fleets. The locations of the warehouses. Neither of them could figure out how Portia managed to haul the entire vault out of the house and bring it to them, but they weren’t complaining at all.The next morning, they showed Uncle Marcus and Grandpa Harold.Needless to say, they were shocked.“He’s going to get a fast trial,” Grandpa Harold said. “A case this big—an operation this huge… there’s no way he could ever get out of it.”“Should we all submit this to our lawyers?” Elena asked.Uncle Marcus nodded. “We also need eyes on this. We need to let the world know that it’s not Portia but Russell himself.”And so the news spread. Uncle Marcus gave enough information to the media and caused a frenzy so big that it basically became a witch hunt, all out to get Russell. The press conference that he’d been

Tristan tries to follow, but I say, “Please keep a lookout for them. I need you here to keep them safe in case something happens.”He stops. “And who’s going to keep you safe?”“I got it,” I say. “I’ll have guards with me. Everything will be okay.”As soon as those words leave my mouth, I feel like a liar. When has it been okay? Why is it that we just don’t win?I’m so angry and so tired of it all that I just rush to the gate, flanked by ranks of guards, seeing
